Here comes the RAIN !!!

I am in Conroe. When the worst of the storm hit I was in my workshop. The rain started coming so hard I could not hear myself think! So I stepped around the corner and saw the water start coming thru the shop. I bailed outside, yelled for my wife and headed for the tractor. Got the front end loader working on a ditch while the wife pushed water with a shovel and rake towards the trench.
Made a heck of a mess. I had a landscape rake attached to the rear and at one point sunk in the mud and the rake caught making escape impossible. So I had to unhook it in the rain/mud/river so I could pull myself out.

Spent all day sunday removing about 10 yards of dirt and re-profiling the land to flow away from the workshop better.

That storm was way worse than IKE, we didn't get any flooding at all in IKE. This storm created an instant river right thru my property.

Well we got another 5" of rain overnight. The county came by this week and picked up the large pile of trash I raked up last weekend. Still no work on the drainage. Not as much trash this time but still several cubic yards of leaves, sticks and other trash backing up at the main culverts. Water did not come up quite as high this time. Took more pictures to send to the county.

I saw that storm on the radar last night and commented to my wife about it. We were wondering if it was going to hit us or not. It stayed South of us and we were dry all night. Five inches is the worse I've seen at one time. It sure causes allot of runoff, but from what I've see, we're able to handle that amount without any severe damage if we get some time to dry out afterwards. It's when we get a storm day after day that the damage occurs. The ground is just saturated and the water is flowing too fast for the ground the stay together.

It's raining here right now. Just a mild, misty rain with a little thunder. I was hoping to move some dirt, but that isn't possible when it's all mud. The radar shows a few heavy areas that might hit us. I'm hoping it misses and we dry out fairly quickly. If not, I'm working on indoor projects.

We received 5 inches overnight, at least that is the maximum I can measure. The place across the road as a tank of about 1 acre in extent and it went from half to full overnight. We have enough elevation variation that flooding is a rare and short term problem.

There is a weather station about 2 miles from us that is on-line and it recorded a peak rainfall rate of 3 inches/hour but totaled slightly over 4 inches.

So far we have no rain; just wind and a 20% chance of rain in the forecast. The Texas Motor Speedway on I-35W has started a monthly flea market (Trade Days) and yesterday, I helped a son-in-law put up the 10' x 20' canopy shown in the photo. The NWS shows the wind was only 23-24 mph, gusting to 39-40. Out there in the wide open flat land, it sure seemed stronger than that to us. Ordinary tent stakes wouldn't do the job. We had to anchor it to the pickup truck to hold it while we got some 2' steel stakes from Home Depot, and that was before the blue tarp was added for a wall on one side. But as you can see, it's still pretty windy today; pretty tough for the flea market vendors.

That was how it was for our street festival last weekend. Most of the vendors gave up on Saturday and went home early. Sunday turned out to be very nice and most at least broke even.

My wife is out in this mess some place between here and OK city. She rode up there with a friend to help them move a kid home from college. They were still there at 10 am waiting for the kid to finish up with all her good bye's. They should be on the road back home now.

I'd guess your wife has about a 7 hour or more drive, and driving into this wind might make it a bit uncomfortable. Our daughter called and told my wife the managers at the Texas Motor Speedway Trade Days came around apologizing for the lack of visitors (and corresponding lack of sales) today, but said they expect a bigger crowd tomorrow when they're also having a car show. I see they've changed the forecast a little bit to a 30% chance of rain tomorrow, so if that happens, I guess this weekend will be a bust for the vendors.

Of course, I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow, but then hope it does rain after tomorrow. I mowed the yard today and it needs watering.

The rain never really happened here today. It was sprinkling this morning and the radar had a good looking storm heading this way, but it just stalled out and then by noon, it was gone. Luckily there wasn't very much moisture on the ground and it was dry fairly quickly.

The forecast for Sunday was 60% for rain, then when the storm disappeared, it went down to 50%. I just checked and now it's down to 20%. I'm sure glad the experts can predict what's gonna happen ten years from now, but don't have a clue what is going to happen tomorrow.

My wife made in about midnight last night. Says no rain along the way. Passed close to Eddies as they came the more direct way instead of looping through the Dallas area.

How close? I'm half a mile off Interstate 20.

They passed through Kilgore on 259 I think heading south. Not quite as far over as Tyler. We should be heading up that was soon. Almost time for our annual trip to Canton for the trade days before the summer heat sets in. Dang thats next weekend and we already have plans.

We were up that way a few years ago and bought a full blood Boer buck from a guy in Lindale. I guess we were also in Tyler a couple of years ago for the Texas Young Farmer convention. Toured the Kiepersol ranch and then the winery.

If they got winds like we got here, they spent the whole weekend just tending to their tent so it would not blow away. Unfortunately, the 70% rain coverage for yesterday afternoon and last night has been a bust so far. All we have had is 40-50 mph gusts that blew dust in the air like a sandblaster. I do hear a ffew thunder rumbles this morning, so maybe we will get a shower today.:)

Last week, Ron and Betty Hall stopped in with their motorhome on the way back home to Michigan. Last Friday, we went to the Germanfest Celebration in Muenster, TX. It was very windy and the vendors all had to keep their goods tied down so they would not blow away. By this weekend, it got even worse. I would not have wanted to be driving a motorhome in the gusty wind, but Ron and Betty left on Saturday morning to head back north. We did manage to get some pictures taken in our big bluebonnet patch.:)

Jim, we've had a little thunder and we have very dark skies and wind and some very light (barely noticeable) sprinkles, but we're hoping it's going to rain enough to water the yard.

And yep, it was not a good weekend the vendors at the Texas Motor Speedway; too windy, very light turnout, etc. This was just the second month that the Speedway has tried to get this new flea market started, and our daughter said a number of the vendors said they'd never be back.

We have to go to Muenster every once in awhile to buy meats at Fischer's Meat Market, but we've missed the Germanfest each time; maybe next year.

More rain! It has been raining here since about 2pm. Light rain and soaking in. Looks like it will continue through the evening.

Did get in a little mowing yesterday and this morning. I really like the flail mower. We have a couple of half barrel planters (these are cut the long way, wish I could find more) that the wife wanted moved. Easy enough to slip the forks under them and pick them up off their cradles, pick the cradles up and away. I do need to make new cradles for them out of 2x stock however.

Our rain was all between 6:30 and 11:30 a.m., light to moderate rain for a total of about .54". A possibility of more rain tonight and tomrrow still in the forecast, so we'd certainly be happy to see some more, but we're thankful for what we got.

Good Evenin Bird,
I saw the radar for east Texas a bit earlier today and the rain looked pretty heavy, Im sure Eddie is happy, the lake is gettin filled ! :)

Yep, Scotty, the radar made it look like the heavy stuff went right across the middle or south half of Dallas, and that's about 40 miles south of me. And the Denton Airport, just north of me, only recorded .27".
