Here comes the RAIN !!!

Mother Nature is sure cruel this year. Drought in the south and west, and cool and wet up here! It's been raining off and on for 3 weeks and the crops are rotting in the fields. Strawberries and not ripening due to lack of sun and too much rain. And rain is all that's in the forecast for the next few days, and cool for the middle of summer - high of 61 F today and tomorrow. We had one week of nice weather in June. :(

I woke up to rain this morning and the total is now at 1.16 since it started yesterday. The radar shows it really coming down below me, and allot more headed this way. If it moves just a bit North, I should get allot more. If it stays on its current path, I'll just get a bit more of this drizzle that's coming down right now.

The Weatherman on the news last night was all excited about the storm that came through yesterday, but then said that was it for the week. I spend too much time looking at the forecast and watching the local news channels. It's become a game with Steph and I on how they get it wrong. This time, they were really off!!!!!

An hour or so ago, the NWS showed the actual Denton temperature to be 100 with a heat index of 107, but it's started to cool off now; down to 99 with a heat index of 105.

105.4 ACTUAL temp in Jarrell right now, 5PM... as reported by the station at the school.

Our digital thermometer read 109 yesterday. We had .25" of rain on Monday, that is .45" for the month. Tanks drying up fast. Losing my catfish now. Water is too warm and no oxygen. Buzzards are getting free sushi. All we can do is watch it all happen. Not good.

About 7 a.m., we had a brief shower this morning that put about .03" of rain in the gauge.:D

I was putting metal on a porch that I'm building and struggling with the heat coming off of the panels. It was only 95 degrees out, but the metal was too hot to touch. I had to use a tarp to hold onto each panel to get it onto the roof, then I could use a 2x4 to position it, and another tarp to rest on while screwing the panel into place. The last two panels had me really worried since I had to get onto the roof to fasten them down.

Around 4pm, when I had four panels to go, the clouds rolled in and the temps seemed to drop ten degrees. I heard thunder off in the distance, and saw a few flashes of lightning. The metal panels cooled down so quickly that by the time it took to fasten one down, the next one was cool enough to pick up with my bare hands. It's crazy how quickly they heat up and cool down!!!

I screwed the last panel down while watching rain on the lake next to the house I'm working on, but not a single drop hit me while I was on the roof. By the time I had my tools put away, it was raining, thundering and I saw a few flashes of lightning. Ten minutes later and I wouldn't have been able to finish the roof that day.

It wasn't much rain, and we didn't get any at my place, but it was just enough to allow me to finish what was going to be a very painful job, and ended up being pretty easy. Sometimes I just wonder at how I can get so lucky.

That's funny!:D I had my NWS radar up and said to myself, "Well, Bird is gettin' a sprinkle." Sure enough, I saw your post and it was just as I suspected. Just enough rain to make a mess on your car. Did all the dots connect?

Jim, after that brief shower, the sun came out, but now we have a few clouds again for which I'm sure the guys on my roof are grateful. A few years ago, I'd have done it myself and saved some money, but instead I'm letting someone else put a couple of Whirlybird wind turbine roof vents on the house this morning. The guys putting these things on the roof said they came through a heavy rain in Lewisville on I-35E.

And Eddie, last week, I was helping a neighbor move and they had a couple of small kid's tricycles. I don't know why, but they had put each tricycle in a black plastic garbage bag. And when I went to take them out my pickup bed, that plastic was so hot, that I had to set them down to let my hands cool twice to get them across a 30' yard.

The Dallas Morning News says yesterday set a new record for the amount of electricity used. The temperature in Dallas is now 102 and Denton is 101; about the same as yesterday. I hope my electric bill doesn't set a new record, but I figure that's a good possibility.

We've been praying for rain around here the last couple of weeks. Things are drying out and the heat has been in hundreds every day with a heat index close to 110 a few of those days. The forecast was at 20 to 40% for rain this weekend, but it kept going up and down. Last night and today were at 20%, but a storm went through that just missed us last night that looke pretty severe. I could see the lightning off to the East, but that's as close as it came. This morning we woke up to thunder and a steady rain!!!!!! It's just finishing up according to the radar that I'm watching and I have .91 of an inch on my digital rain gauge!!!!!!

Eddie, you did a lot better than me. Yesterday afternoon the sky turned black in the north and Kathy told me there was a big storm coming down hwy 287 and it would be here in 1/2 hour. I scrambled to put everything away as the outflow hit and it dropped about 15 degrees. I was sure we were gonna get a nice rain. Turns out it fizzled about 10 miles north of us and we only got a sprinkle.:( However, last night we had a couple of light showers come through and we ended up with about 1/4". It's not what I wanted, but I'll take that for sure. It means I don't have to water anything today. It's much cooler out in general also. Normally it would be 103 by now and today it is only 90 degrees. I'll take 90 in July anytime.:)

Wish I'd been as lucky as you guys. The NWS showed a 40% chance for us last night, and we did see some dark clouds yesterday evening. Then I awoke at 1:10 a.m. to see lots of lightning, and the NWS shows Denton got .07", but my rain gauge is dry as a bone. But they're showing a 40% chance again tonight, so I'm hoping. And Jim, I just finshed mowing the yard and it's tough out in the sun, but officially only 88 degrees, so like you said, it's an improvement.

I live in Western Wise county we also had the big nice dark clouds but only got a few sprinkles by this morning.

I show a 40% tonight and 50% tomorrow so fingers crossed.

Getting miserably dry, whats that saying, " I'd pee on a spark plug if it would help", not that bad yet but headed that way.

The Dallas Morning News says yesterday set a new record for the amount of electricity used. .... I hope my electric bill doesn't set a new record, but I figure that's a good possibility.

We're wishing you guys rain and cooler weather, that's for sure! Bird, on the news here this morning was that due to the cooler and wetter than normal summer in Ontario, they have a surplus of electricity as it hasn't been required for air conditioners....and farmers are hoping for some sun and heat to get the crops ripening!

/ Here comes the RAIN !!! #258
Our forecast was for a 50% chance or rain last night; didn't happen. So it's a 20% chance today and 50% chance tonight and 40% tomorrow, and I started the sprinklers going at 6 a.m. because my lawn's burning up.

/ Here comes the RAIN !!! #259
Bird, I started my sprinklers at 6:30 before sitting down at the computer. I gotta go move them soon.:) Yesterday's 1/4" is gone, evaporated, POOF! I also have to water my garden today, but my cantaloupes are cracking slightly due to too much moisture. I've picked about 25 cantaloupes and have another 25 almost ready to pick. Suddenly, I'm covered in cantaloupes.
