help with stuct shifter

need help with my 84 ford 1700 tractor. my son in law was on it the other day and got the gear shifter stuck in gear. i dont know what gear and can not move the shifter anywhere. i not sure what i should do to free it up. i know when i drove it i had no trouble switching in and out gear but cant get anything except the gear it is in . i can shift from 1 , 2 , 3, and r which is the one on the right but the one on left wont budge.

If you look at the area arround the shifter you will see 4 bolts. Each of these bolts has a spring and a ball under it. These are detents. They hold it in gear. Sontimes the balls get wore and become stuck.Remove one bolt at a time and check the shifter. When you find the one that frees the shifter remove the spring and ball with a magnet and inspect the ball for wear.

Is it stuck while the tractor is shut off?

mine has two. i checked the on the right and took out two springs and it shifted out . thank you.
