I will do that! Eventually I will have a second well dug up topside with a solar powered well pump. Until then...

BlueRiver,

Where should I go looking for one of these. I believe it is the PERFECT idea for now.

MadJack,

This is TOTALLY COOL! Or rather WARM! I will look into this.
BTW - I'm in Virginia, not Texas. But I would be OK living in Texas...

Be well all,
David

Check Craigç—´ List. I see them posted around here quite often. I think they are mainly used for food processing items.

Here is a link to what they look like:http://nh.craigslist.org/for/2782611405.html

This is so simple.

If this is just a temporary thing until you get a well put in up the hill have you considered leading the horses down the hill to drink and letting them carry their own damm water up the hill?

SandburRanch,

This idea has definitely got merit, but I would probably keep water up top also and walk them down the hill sometimes just for fun and simplicity...

I like the idea of a trough and hitching post down by the carport...

I will water them at least twice a day also, just in case anyone is concerned...

Yep Check CL ... for 65-75 dollars you can move alot of water and believe me you can find alot of uses for on.

Haul water to newly planted tree seedlings, I also have mine rigged with a 12 volt pump hook it to my gas presure water and I have a way to wash my vinyl fence ... I can fill it from the pond by reversing the pump.

I also haul water to the field to re-load my sprayer ... I have used it to water the garden.

A cheap water transport system.

So the mustangs in Nevada water every day?

ummmm....no

Those horses are wild. Like many other populations of wild horses, only the most hardy survive. The OP's horses are presumably domestic. To suggest they can go without water for days is reckless. Maybe they can; maybe they'll colic.

Did I say days? I don't think so.

David.....Read the attached link...maybe you could rig this up and use the flowing water from your outside water faucet to make it work...if so it beats hauling it...HowStuffWorks "How does a hydraulic ram pump work?"

Wastes one whale of a lot of water to pump a little bit but does it 24/7 so it adds up. Great for a running stream but I sure wouldn't use it on my well or municipla system.

Actually, you did:

Unless at hard work, horses in cold weather will only need water about every other day on average.

The reason why I'm dwelling on this is not to be a jackass but to make it clear that domestic horses should not be left for long periods of time without water.

Logan,

Pics please! :D

If I follow you you are suggesting a rain barrell for a run-in shed. I suspect that would help, but we don't get THAT much rain...

But I do like the idea...

David

not sure how to post pics here if you send me your e-mail via PM I will send some pics.

Update...

They are pretty low on water this morning. we started with 40 gallons on Sunday.

I tried filling the bucket but it has HOLES in the sides so I did not get much in it and then could not easily get the water out efficiently.

I think I'm just going to get some long, cheap hose (for now).

I believe you may get tired of draining the hose's so they don't freeze ... unless it never freezes at you place.
