Gentlefolk,

I have been lurking quite a while and finally have a question that I can't find an answer to :) I managed to snap the driving shaft (fan shaft) and somehow managed to get the gearbox misaligned on the auger shaft. The gearbox it's about 1/2" offset to the right as you are looking at the front of the blower. I am not sure how I managed to move it on the auger shaft but move it I did. I am looking for any suggestions as to how I might move it back.

Thanks for your assistance.

Best Regards,

Thomas

I like driving forward more than backwards;)

Is the gear box mount bent? Can you post some pics?

Gee "check" that was really helpful advice.

tmcdougall - I don't think you're screwed. There is a woodruff key in the gear box that I know from experience that can be sheared off. Without the woodruff key the augers will spin freely and easily move sideways 1/2". Get a look at the parts manual for that blower. They are now available online from the kubota website.

I'll grab a couple of pictures when I get back in the shop. The problem is the gear the worm gear engages is shifted to one side by about 1/2". I found this out after I replaced the broken driven shaft the fan is on and reassembled the auger assembly back into the snowblower housing. I was unable to get one auger shear pin in because the hole was misaligned relative to the shaft.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Here is a picture showing the problem I had. uploadfromtaptalk1454273806095.jpg

The solution was to get the gear/woodruff key loose. The auger shaft has a bit of corrosion on it and the gear had slid to one side and gotten stuck. After I got it free there was enough play to center the gearbox about the shaft. I neglected to get pictures of the gear box while it was apart.

I was also able to find the cause of the broken driving shaft, the replacement of which was the cause of my original question. I sucked something up the fan and bent the sheet metal far euploadfromtaptalk1454273806095.jpgenough that the auger was able to hit it causing the gearbox to rotate slightly breaking the shaft.

When you experience damage to your blower itself you need to question what you are using for a shear bolt on the pto shaft.
It should have broken before the main blower parts were damaged.
Too hard a bolt can allow serious damage.
Start with the recommended grade of bolt and even go softer if for example a grade 5 is recommended. Go with a grade 2 and see if it can stand up without failing all the time just from the snow load on the blower.

The gearbox simply slips on and off the auger shaft. A woodruff key provides rotational alignment, but the shaft is free to move through the transmission. It is aligned simply by the geometry of the chassis and support bearings. After some use, the key/keyway can get marred, so the transmission can stick. Take the gearbox, augers and shaft off of the chassis, make sure the gearbox is well supported, and give the shaft a good rap with a BFH.

And that is essentially what I did, used a SFH though as it was easy to hand. Freeing up the gear did the trick. Wish I had taken more pictures. Oh well, next time.
