I'm surprised a tracked machine would be less useful in the conditions you describe than a wheeled machine.

Yes...and no. Rubber tracked machines are poor in greasy mud. I have over the wheel metal tracks on my skid steer. They help a lot, at least in the mud I've encountered so far. But come "greasy mud" (25 degree nights, 35 daytime) time, I suspect even that will stay in the barn. I have all hills here.

I'm no expert, but I think the typical rubber tracks used on CTLs and mini excavators are designed for low pressure and reduced surface damage. The tread is not deep and will easily slide. There are some suppliers of more aggressive rubber tracks, or especially metal tracks with rubber inserts that may do better.
