Help with broken Sears axle?

Hi all, friend of mine came to me with a broken axle on this unit wondering if I could weld it. A replacement part would be a much more viable option, but he couldn't find a parts source used or new. Can anyone point us in the right direction?

Go to Life Management: Everything just got easier - ManageMyLife.com and search the model number. They have the manual online. I don't know about the availability of the part, but maybe that is a start.

Should be able to order it directly from Sears based on the Serial Number of the machine.

Otherwise, there are dozens of AYP dealers online. I would be willing to bet, you will have to buy the entire transaxle assembly though....

Yeah, unfortunately that's kinda what I was thinking on the whole unit deal. I'm not sure why he hasn't tried new. He may have said, but I was dodging traffic with a semi on I87 at the time.

Depending on where it broke, you could weld a sleeve over the break.

Yeah, that was my original thought and why he asked me about it. By the sounds of it, there is only 1/2" between the break and housing. It'd be tough.

You may be able to read the tag on the transmission to get the model number for the tranny, then look up parts for the tranny. Most likely it is a Hydrogear, and individual parts should be available through any hydrogear dealer, which would include Mtd, Poulan, Husqvarna dealers.
