Help from all y\'all experts please

Ok another new tractor buyer here that is getting more confused the more he looks.

Background – Bought a house outside of Houston TX on 4 acres. Mostly flat all open no trees or obstacles. The property does slope off to a lake and grass right up to the water almost. All along the front and side there is a 15-20’ wide V-shaped drainage ditch which needs to be cut. Some of the “field” part is smooth other parts are rough with 6-12” clumps of grass in some areas, some areas eroded near the lake, some areas are muddy and some areas are pretty rough not to mention the sometimes foot high fire ant mounds. Pictures worth a 1000 words hopefully I did this link right: Photos

Not knowing anything about trying to cut this much grass we bought a Scotts 20hp 48” cut riding mower because we didn’t know any better and the JD salesman said this was all we needed. The Scotts is fantastic for cutting the nice St. Augustine sodded area that is around the house but once in the field it isn’t as good. It gets the job done but I feel I am tearing it up trying to cut everything. On the grass clumps I have to cut back to ¼ speed and the ride is really bumpy like riding over bowling balls. The eroded areas I have to stay away from as the holes will swallow the tires and the thing gets stuck even it a little standing water. It does the drainage ditches pretty well with a few areas being just too steep.

I am getting tired of beating the little Scotts machine and myself to death just cutting the grass. My lovely wife has authorized the purchase of a real tractor this year (or was it I bugged her enough until she just said yes). Keeping the Scotts for the grass around the house.

The age old question for the experts here now is which tractor to buy. Yes I have read most of the similar posts recently but like I said I am getting really confused by all this. I know a few things I want for sure. I want a FEL, we have extensive landscaping and it nearly killed me last year moving 8 cubic yards of mulch around the house by hand, plus I need to fill in some of the low areas and get the drainage working a little better and I know the FEL will come in handy for other projects. I know I want a rear mount mower as opposed to mid mount. Probably looking at 4WD for the ditches, slope to lake and the wet areas and mud. Probably looking at new, can’t find too much good used stuff of what I want.

I would like to stay at or under $15,000. There is a good JD place 10 minutes away and Kubota 15 minutes away. New Holland a bit further, don’t see or really want much else other than the big 3.

Before y’all start the Kubota BX series and JD 2000 series are just too small, don’t want them, ain’t gonna work. Recently looked at Kubota 7500 and 2710 both maybe the size I need? Kubota 2600 and 3000 too big? JD 790 was nice. NH TC24D was nice.

So what do all the experts here say is the best size and the best value for my situation???

Oh also brush hog or finish mower?

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

bobobro,

It sure looks like you have a really nice place there. I agree you will beat that Scott's machine pretty good with all of them clumps and stuff. I also agree that you need somewhere around 20 to 25 horsepower. As far as Kubota, John Deere and New Holland not one of them is any better than the other. They are all good machines. Most people here will tell you that the dealer is a pretty important thing. He has to service it after the sale. I guess since you have an idea of what you want I would go out and get all three of them under your seat. Get the feel of which one you like the best. Get to know the dealers some and you will eventually like one of them over the others. Get your prices together, it is worth paying more from a dealer that you like but you have to draw a line there also. But just get out there and test drive them, look at the options and how they fit with what you want to do. Keep us all posted here and keep us up to date.

My personal case was I started looking at Kubota and John Deere and basically ended up with New Holland because of the attitudes from the dealers. You may find it different where your from but I will only stress the dealer again.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

i think u pretty much have it down to what size u want, stay in the 20 to 25 hp range give or take a few hp , pick the one that feels best to you. did u mention if u are going with a fel? get one with the tractor, best implement u can have. i went orange but the others are fine also. just a matter of preferce and the cost that can be worked out, in some areas u can get better prices on blue, some others with green and then agin u can do better with orange. alot depends on the area AND THE DEALER. keep us informed please, and welcome to the forum

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

Lets deviate a slight bit here. Seeing as how you already have the close to the house mowing handled, why look at a ag-utility tractor? It will handle your rough areas much better than a CUT,and be built stronger too. It will also bring with it more loader lift,3 pth lift, and down right low end grunt. You will have many more units to choose from on the used market. Might be kinda tough though finding a used mfd one under 40 hp or so. The new "00" series from www.mahindrausa.com is worth looking at. Just check out the other brands forum below.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

You are on the right track with a larger frame tractor. I will just throw in that you should avoid the JD790 because I think you will want hydrostat for the FEL work. I am partial to Massey, but if you dont have a nearby dealer dont worry about it. The b7800 is getting a lot of positive press, dont know about pricing. Even if you can just get the brush hog, FEL, and box blade to start you will have plenty to do. Other implements can be rented for one-time uses.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

It would sound as though all the homework is finished. It's just that agonizing moment trying to assure yourself that you have made the best choice for your needs.

At this point put all tractor thoughts aside for a week or so and then go get the one that's allready been chosen by the subliminal mind. It'll tell you what's best for you.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

Here's a machine that probably fits your needs if you are anywhere near a Branson dealer. This tractor, with FEL is right in your price range. These are made in S. Korea, which is going to be the next Japan, tech. wise. They rank about 10th in the world in Gross Domestic Product along with Canada, and growing rapidly.

"As far as Kubota, John Deere and New Holland not one of them is any better than the other. "

Murph, this is where I will definitely disagree with you. There are definitely differences that make a manufactuer's particular model better then a competitors model. This is how most of us end up decidiing on which brand and model we choose. For example, in my opinion, no one built or builds a better hydrostatic transmission then Kubota's. No one else has NH's supersteer. You will find that there are significant differences and perhaps the very reason this forum exists, to discuss those differences, good or bad. Rat...

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

Well Rat,

I still disagree with you. Yes each one has advantages that is pertinent to each of us. But over all not one of them can claim that they are a better tractor than the other. All three are good and all three of them have their problems. And I based on experience disagree with you on Kubota having the best HST when my dad's neighbor's has been in three times in the 5 years he has owned it for the Hydro transmission. I don't know what the reasons were for but I do know that he paid a pretty penny to repair it the last time. But I would not be afraid to buy a Kubota. Not one of us could come and say their tractor is better than someone else's and that is the point I was trying to get across. As far as saying one is better mechanically than the other, well we all could sit here and argue for the rest of our lives and never get anyplace.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

I'll just hop in here real quick....

You're on the right track, it sounds like. I have a Kubota B7300, which is very much like the B7500 or B7800 (both of those have power steering, which I don't /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif, and a bit more HP). Great tractor, love it. I think that you should follow the advice already given and visit the dealers and drive the tractors around.

Two factors are the keys, in my mind. First, get the tractor you like the best. I'd suggest sticking with the "big three" - the grey market tractors have always worried me (I know, there are folks that have had great experiences with them!). Second, go with the dealer you feel most comfortable with. The way they set the tractor up at first will have a *lot* to do with how well it performs in the long run (when the dealer gets the tractor it is in a shipping crate, pretty much disassembled).

I would also strongly recommend HST instead of clutch if you are planning to do close FEL work around the house. Even with HST I've managed to "gently" bump the house and you'd be surprised how much damage you can do that way /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. Those darn things are...well, capable of doing all kinds of things /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I just love my FEL. The only thing I use my wheelbarrow for any more is mixing cement - can't bear the thought of getting junk on my loader bucket. I'm sure I won't damage it that way, but the idea just worries me - I'm over protective /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Good luck on your search and let us know what you pick up.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

With that small of land, but with a wide variety of needs.. a small CUT may be just fine.

Even a smalll tractor like a NH TC 18 with a MMM would do fine.. it is a bit heavier that the deck on a riding lawnmower. And sounds like you don't have any brush it cut.

You can get 4wd from what I understand.

Prices on the TC 18 used to be 8k and up.

There are lots of flavors to choose from. Kubota even makes a BX2200 small tractor. You might need to got out window shopping one day and see some of the options.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

I would agree with those who have suggested that you get a CUT. You land is flat and I didn't hear you give any good reason for needing a larger frame tractor. From 24 -30 HP or so would be more than sufficient. I would highly recommend Hydro and a loader for sure. Some good models for under 15,000 might be the Kubota B7500, or B7800. The NH boomers are cool although I haven't actually driven one yet. The 21, 24, would probably work out well but I'm not sure if you could get one of those with a loader for $15,000. I was offered some good deals on the New Holland TC30 which is more along the "economy" line similar to the JD 790 you mentioned but the TC30 does have a hydro available but that's a matter of personal preference. I drove several JD 790's and I really liked the size of it but I was really wanting hydro. I don't know much else about the Deere's but the 4X10 series probably cannot be had for your price range. I would highly recommend going out and test driving tractors. It's fun and you really will have a preference for the comfort and ergonomics of them. Nice place you've got there. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Welcome to TBN, Wayne! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Your link didn't come out right because (I'm guessing here) you composed this reply in a word processor then pasted it into the Post box? This can cause problems, particularly with things like punctuation marks and line breaks.

Here's the Photos link.

Before y’all start the Kubota BX series and JD 2000 series are just too small, don’t want them, ain’t gonna work.

I think these size tractor with the attachment you want are the only tractors that will fit your 15k price range. I have priced all of the big 3 and they are up there.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

You ought to consider one of the koreans, especially if you want to stay under $15,000k. Branson, Century, Kioti, Mahindra. Don't know of anyone who owns one that does not think them comparable to the big three. Don't let prejudices stand in the way of making an intelligent decision. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

Wow! I have got some great advice here and fast too! Thanks to all who have responded. A large consensus of the replies suggest shopping the dealers and the machines to find the one (dealer and machine) I like the best. That was exactly the next step I was going to take. The JD place that is real close is having a grand opening 4-11 thru 4-13 with all their used equipment, demos, test drives set up and even hot dogs. I will for sure be there. That dealer has 5 locations and sells JD and Massey web page and like I said a Kubota dealer is only 15 minutes away. Again thanks for all the advice (keep it coming) I’m sure I will be asking more questions and let y’all know how my purchase adventure goes.

Re: Help from all y\'all experts please

Murph, I don't know how I should respond to this:

"And I based on experience disagree with you on Kubota having the best HST when my dad's neighbor's has been in three times in the 5 years he has owned it for the Hydro transmission. "

I could say: oh well, Murphs, dad's, neighbor's, Kubota's HST has been in the shop 3 times therefore I withdraw my remark about Kubotas HST being in my opinion the best one built. But it's probably not a great way to go since no of us can verify comments made by others here. That is why I would refrain from commenting on my neighbors or friends of neighbors experiences. How it's used and abused, maintained etc. are just some of the unknown factors. I have used my local NH/Kubota and my local JD/Kubota quite extensively for information. Prior to MChalkley convincing me to try HST, I did not know it even existed. I tried the HST's from JD, NH and of course Kubota and that is what sold me. Be it a full throttle low gear mashing of the pedal to a idle high gear romp, the Kubotas did not stall, jerk and easily had the least amount of whine and consistent pedal effort. All three make arguably the best tractor according to their brochures and information, its our job to decipher it all out. JD's video did a pretty convincing job on the 4X00 series. The new 4X10 series is very nice, it would be in the running if the 4410 could mount a loader like the 460. The 430 is in my opinion in desperate need of an upgrade as is NH's 7308. Dump and rollback angles are pretty bad on both. The new Boomers seemed to start a revolution in tractor design that some others are now following. All three have reputable engines no doubt. One could argue the merits of each engine design but I think we would be picking the fly poop out of the pepper. Anyway, all the information given to Bobobar(?) has obviously been helping him somewhat and in the end, thats what its all about. Rat...

Hey BoBoBro, don't forget to check out the Massey Ferguson 1200 and 1400 series while your at the John Deere dealer! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I have seen several and they are good looking machines.

Besides, you can't go wrong with that Massey dependability! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
