Heli Coil

I thinking about using a 1/2" x 13T heli coil to repair threads on my tiller gearbox mounting bracket. Has anyone used the heli coil products and how do they stand up to vibration?

Hiya,

I used them all the time for head bolts in aluminum small block Chevys, they work great. Follow the instructions and you'll be fine. You do have the correct tap and installer right?

I used Loc-tite 271 instead of the regular blue 241 thread locker. I didn't care about getting them out, the motors wouldn't last that long without something poking through the side....

I've only used a heli coil one time and that was 25-30 years ago, when I (like the dummy I was) stripped the spark plug threads out of the aluminum head on a lawnboy lawnmower. So I removed the head from the engine and put the heli coil in and it was still working just fine years later when I retired and gave that lawnmower away.

Heli Coil is an excellent and proven product, usually the repair is better then the base material.

There are also now several other brands out there, many less expensive.

When I used to race sports cars I put them in every threaded part in my aluminum block and heads. It was done as a preventative measure so when at the track if I had to replace something I didn't have to worry about stripping out any threads. In my opinion they will do a good job for you.

Thanks, all, for the quick responses. The 1/2" x 13T calls for a 17/32" drill bit. I can't find one for a 3/8" drive drill. The heli coil kits that I've reviewed has the bit for 1/2" drive. I wonder If I could get a 3/8" x 1/2" attachment for my drill?

Many places carry step down drill bits that allow the use of a larger bit in a 3/8" chuck. Or, good excuse to get a drill with a 1/2" chuck.

Step down drill bits (or "Silver & Deming" style) have a break point at 1/2-inch size. You can find 1/2-inch drill bits and smaller with a 3/8-inch step down shank. Drill bits larger than 1/2-inch (like 17/32 - 0.5312) will come with a 1/2-inch shank.

I cant remember from that size if that is the HEAVY duty Heli Coil or the EXTRA HD Heli coil. Use the "HD" model and should it ( which I doubt) ever ripout...you can re-drill and install the EXTRA HD model

Go and buy a 1/2" drill from HF..they aint that expensice and you need one around anyway

Also, I wasn't even thinking about the size, I don't know if you can get a bit above 1/2" stepped down to 3/8". You are probably going to need a drill with a 1/2" chuck. Or, you could change the chuck in your drill to 1/2".

A 1/2 inch drill can be bought at Harbor Freight pretty cheap and it will come in handy many times in the future and here is your 17/32 bit click here for bit

Very true but at enco, you get a set of five

Those S & D drill bits all have 1/2 shanks on them.
You can get them and turn the shank down to 3/8" on a lathe or grind it down on a surface grinder. Maybe a shop can do that for you. Perhaps you can get them to cut 3 equally spaced flats on the shank?
All you need is about 1" long of 3/8" shank to hold on to.

Like spiderlk said TIME SERT is the way to go, every gm dealer has a instock selection of them, and we have all been to class on how to use them correctly belive it or not. great product !!!! cant tell you how many northstar engines have been saved with those babies

Don't ever use Loctite w a Helicoil if there's even a remote chance you might need to get it out. If vibration is an issue then buy the locking Helicoil instead of the standard version. # 3585 series as opposed to the 1185 series.

Thanks for the help, guys. I have looked at the Time Serts and think they will be better than Heli Coils. I will also buy a 1/2" drill. I didn't realize 3/8" shanks were only offered for 1/2" and smaller drill bits - I guess that's why I couldn't find one.
