Universal 640 DTC
I am replacing the head gasket on my Universal 640 DTC. This is a romanian built tractor same thing as a Long brand and the engine is a 60-70 Hp four cylinder Fiat diesel with two heads. It is my understanding that this is the same engine used in a White 1370. I have been told to grease the head bolts before I put them in and tork them. What type of grease should I use. Anybody else work on these engines and have any advice/tips?

I can't help you on your engine but I did replace the HG on my Yanmar once and the manual said to coat studs, head bolts and nuts with clean engine oil. hope that helps a little...russ

Use an anti-seize compound.
You'll want to retorque those heads after a short period of time (figure 10-15 hours of use).

engine oil unless otherwise specified in shop manual. Only a few motors I have done have specified sealer instead of oil.

if wet studs.. I'd use a ptfe sealer.. like gasoila.. if blind studs.. i'd be carefull of putting much of anything on them due to hyd lock. I've seen corners of blocks busted out because of that.

in the end.. it's usually safe to follow the service manual..

Hello BJOHA. I was told by a machine shop to use thread sealent, on the threads, and under the head of the bolts. This seals the bolts from leaking, and you must lubercate the under side of the bolt head to get a proper torque.

how will I know if they are blind studs or wet studs? Mine has large bolts that goe down through the head, not studs that stick out of the block. Does that help?

blind or thru.. should be easy to tell. 'wet' bolts go into the water jacket.. blind ones stop at metal.. you don't use a sealer on blind holes.. etc..

Just use a little oil not enough that it runs off and all will be well the most important thing is to follow the correct sequence when torquing them up most engines are a few stages to get to the correct torque may be a couple of torque fig's might be a torque then so many degrees
there is a good chance there will be more than one size of bolt so there will be more that one fig

so a workshop manual and little oil

You will prob require new bolts as well as most head bolts are stretch bolts

(Think i should have confused things enough now my work here is done:confused2:)
