I'm getting set to put the head[rebuilt] back on my 1610d,my question is should I put the head bolts in dry or should I put a little oil on the threads? Thanks for any help, russ

I always wire wheel the bolt threads, chase the threaded holes with a tap and lubricate the bolt threads. Torque to the manufactures spec. Run the engine to warm it up and torque again.

I agree, I always lube the bolts. Also be sure to blow out the bolt holes. We have seen a bunch of gasket material in the holes before. The bolts would bottom out on it before getting tight.

Thanks for the reply,I got another question.I got the head home yesterday and noticed the machine shop had taken this small plate off that sits on the back off the head,it's held on by four bolts.Looking into the head looks like the water jacket. For the life of me I can't figure out what it's for,my manual shows it but doesn't say what it's purpose is or what it is. any body have any ideas? russ

My YM1700 has the same thing. The only thing I can figure is that the heads fit other engines. So, it probably has a use with a different engine. These engines are popular on sailboats. Maybe it has ause there.

That little plate covers the hole where they put the little magic gremlin in. If the plate is removed the magic gremlin escapes and there's no telling what could happen.:)
