Fordson Major Diesel
I purchased a 1954 Fordson Major diesel that has a homemade bucket system. The Hydraulic Resovoir is homemade and is about a 2 gallon capacity. I think I want to replace the resovoir with a 5 gallon unit. The question I have is, do both the feed and return lines mount at the bottom of the new resovoir? Currently the feed line is at the bottom and the return is mounted on the top next to a breather pipe. If I put enough fluid in the tank to properly operate the bucket, fluid spits out of the breather reducing the amount of fluidin the tank. The pump operates good and has alot of power. Anyone have a good answer on this? Thanks

Which one is spitting out the breather?? Is it the current 2 gallon one, or the 5 gallon one.

If you plan on buying a 5 gallon tank made for hydraulics, you shouldnt have to worry, just hook it up according to MFG spec.

But the return line, dont matter so much where it is, just that it is below fluid level a good bit. If it is at the fluid level or above, you get alot of turbulance in the tank and aerate the fluid.

Good info! On tanks I build I always put the suction 1" or so off the bottom and the return on the opposite side or direct flow so the whole tank sees flow. And like was stated both are below fluid level to eliminate areation. Dividers are sometimes used but not needed in most cases. CJ

Thanks so much for your reply..That pretty much clears that up. I found a tank with both connection ports on the bottom and side so I will get it and change it out. Thanks again
