Hope you guys don't mind me posting this here I thought it was somewhat relavent, if not I can start a new thread. Thought some might find it interesting to see winning bids for comparison sakes. Looks like there was some good deals to be had.

Some of those prices are just plain goofy. $2050 for an old sicklebar mower? $2300 for a pretty beat up side delivery rake? Get serious. Mowers like that sell on eBay for well under $1K and similar rakes like NH 56's sell for under $700.

That is cheap for a NH 451 sicklebar mower. A good one will sell at auction here for $2200-3000. That is a NH256 not a 56. A NH256 is worth $1,000-1500 more than a 56.

There is about 4 more nice late model round balers coming up for auction. I want to see what they go for. Too bad not many square balers though.

I've seen NH 256's as low as $800 on eBay during the past 6 months. The highest I've seen for this rake was $1400.

I don't know a lot about used equipment but I would have felt comfortable paying some of those round baler prices as long as they looked as good as they did in these pictures.

They always look better in pictures though. It is really hard to tell what the belts and chains are like in a pic. The one NH there sure looked rough in the pickup area too. I would be interesting to know the bale counts on them too.
Those little M&W balers never do bring much at auction it seems.

Is that the Quarrick auction? They list a lot of stuff on ebay in addition to the auction.

Yes it was. I was monitioring it on Ebay to say what the bids were.

I didn't word that right. I meant in the regular ebay format in addition to this auction. They do this deal along with their regular auction a couple of times a year. I never have tracked the action prices from them though. Good job of organizing it mark.r

Oh, ok I see what your are saying. I am going to try to go to the one in April just to get feel for how they are in real time. I have never been to one other than when I was really young.

Nice job on the pics. The problem is you don't really know what you are getting. If you are very familiar with equipment and can look at it to see what it needs, it might be worth it. Hay is a tricky buisness. You need the equipment when the conditions are right, and it may not stay that way for long. So a break down in the field at the wrong time can be a real problem. Personally, I would have to find something in a baler that I was sure was going to hold up and be safe. Tedders and rakes, yea, I'd be real interested in taking a closer look. Some of the tractors look good and I would probably feel more comfortable buying used tractors than balers.
But, hey, thanks to you guys for taking the time. I am going to try to make it to one, hopefully the next one.

Well all...thought I would post a follow-up since I have now baled about 500 5x4 round bales with my equipment many of you helped me decide on.

So far, it has been pretty good, no real problems. Still learning some things about the equipment.

As far as the tractors, they have worked fine. The cab IH 1086 pulls the vermeer 840 conditioner mower with out any problems. It was without question a great choice for what I am doing.

I pull the Vermeer Rebel 5410 baler with the Mahindra 6000 and it has done just as well. It is very economical to run. I raked and baled about 120 bales the other day on less than 1/2 tank of fuel.

We have been switching off on the raking between the two tractors. Cab with air is nice on those really hot days.

Have had a few adjustments to learn on the net wrap on the baler getting it to run smooth as the role gets toward the end, but think I have that resolved now.

Grease and maintenance, wow...bought an electric grease gun due to all the greasing I am now doing.

The rake has worked great as well. Not sure I need such a big rake due to the thickness of my grass. We have the rake pulled in all the way and it picks up two mowed rows, and thats plenty of grass for the baler. If we do a second cut, the wider options will be helpful.

No regreats on any of the purchases and the dealer for my products has been great.

Still learning how to better cut and rake. Any one have any suggestions on that I am open. Have done the counter clock wise around the outside first, then start clock wise. Problem is when I get to the middle, too may small sharp turns. Raking is the same as well. Would like to see a really good video of some methods if anyone knows where I could find one.

Again, my thanks to all of you who participated. My sons are learning a lot as am I. All of the equipment has done very well and matched up great. Now we just have to move and sell the stuff.

When a NH256 rake is on Ebay you do not get to shake the end rotors or the wheels to see how much wear there is. I've seen many 56's listed as 256's and many customers do not know the difference. Also realize the logistics of moving a NH 256 any distance can be expensive.

When you get towards the center of the field while cutting just start lifting the cutter at the end of the long run and just mow up and down.

We rake around the field 2 or 3 times then go back and forth making passes the length of the field lifting the rake at the ends for the turn. You can adjust this so that you rake across the wind(if its not blowing so hard as to blow away the windrows) and that will keep down the dust and trash you get on you while baling. I make the turns with the baler into every other windrow, because I don't like turning the baler that short. We use a 10 wheel H&S. Wheel rakes don't rake in corners as well as a powered rake.

Did you time how fast you could put on net versus twine? On my baler I can put on net and let it spin 3 seconds to help stick the mesh on the baler. 34 seconds after kicking the tractor out of gear I am rolling again. My shortest twine setting(which isn't enough twine) takes 58 seconds. Net though costs $2 a bale to put on vs less than $.50 for plastic twine.

chh:

So when you rake you have a circle of two or three rows around the outside and then when you go the length of the field do you cut into the outside rows or lift the rake before you get there? If you don't rake into them, then I suppose what you are saying is that you bale the outside rows first, then go the length of the field doing every other row. Do you try to bale the same direction that you rake? And do you rake the same direction that you mow? That is what I have been doing, although when we go back and forth, it is hard to know which row was raked in which direction.

Yes, the net wrap is much faster, under 10 seconds with the net and I am back baling. Close to 40 seconds with the twine with two inch spacing. Don't know what you mean by sticking the mesh on the baler. Are you talking after the bale has been ejected?

/ Hay Equipment full set #179
We either bale the outside rows and then rake the rest or if the wife is running way ahead of me she lifts up before disturbing the outside rows. On my baler at least they recomend running the baler 3 to 4 seconds after the mesh finishes running before ejecting the bale. That sticks the cut end of the wrap down to the underlying layer. If you notice the cut end hanging loose off of the bale, that will pretty well stop that. The cut end when hanging tends to get hung up on things or under the tractor tires when moving bales.

Added the kicker ramps before baling the last 200 bales and what a difference. Have to watch where you put it, but it sure saves on the clutch, shifting and time. I can now bale about 30 4x5 bales in an hour.
