Have a dog that eats to fast for it's own good?

Two of our four dogs are fast eaters, and we have similar bowls for them. Problem solved.

Strange how people apply human attributes to animals.

Dogs do not have a single "chewing" tooth. They are all about ripping tearing and getting it down the gullet.

Millions of years of evolution has passed to refine the process. But we humans somehow know better?

Sheesh!

Dogs eat their food too fast and it makes them throw up. Maybe it was a needed trait in the wild but pet dogs don’t need to eat their food in 5 seconds.

Yep. But people don't like it squishing though their toes.
I’ve gotten out of bed in the middle of the night and stepped in worse, when my last dog was getting old.

I put a golfball in our fast eaters bowl and it slowed him down for a few bites then he promptly removed the ball and set it to the side of the bowl. After downing his food, took the ball out his dog door to the backyard and left it there.

I know dogs are animals. I also know it can be a inherited trait for a dog to chase livestock, where in some instances, that trait can also get them killed if they aren't a "working dog" obeying commands.

I also know human beings are animals.

A sincere question, how many dogs have lived under your roof?

Another question would be how many children who were wards of the state have lived under your roof?

We are not talking about applying human attributes to animals, but talking about behavior modification for the betterment of the "pack of animals" living together as a unit.

Is it normal trait for a child to hide food because they honestly don't know when the next time will be when they will eat? Is it also normal for a child not to know their father, or if they do, they are afraid their father may beat the living crap out of them? One could argue that any type of human abuse is a learned trait, not one inherited.

Reality is IMO it is a blurred line with why both dogs and children need behavior modification for their betterment, but generally I've found it coming down having rules being applied both of them, and feeling safe and secure in their environment.

This one dog we found as a puppy in front of our house (no where near the road). Her one trait was that she wouldn't eat the food, but inhale it to the point where she did throw up regularly after eating. She also had a habit of wanting to eat our other dogs food because they are all fed at the same time and since she was the first one done eating, she had the opportunity to go to another bowl to try and "steal" food (funny how dogs will provide their own "behavior modification" to their 4 legged counterparts LOL).

The bowl in question is nothing more than a tool for behavior modification for the betterment of all the animals (including me) living under our roof. I can actually feed her first now (instead of last, where she would still finish eating before all the other dogs) and she is now the last to finish. Although we've only had the bowl for a short time, no upchucking due to eating fast at least for now.

Smart dog.

If for whatever reason you have a dog that eats too fast for it's own good, see attached.

My wife found it, and it has been amazing with one puppy we found on our property.

We've had this issue from time to time with other dogs in our lives, but this is actually a pretty simply solution to slower their eating habits. They have no choice LOL

Funny thing, do a web search for dog bowls for dogs who eat to fast, and you'll find likewise products. Just so happens my wife stumbled across it at a pet store.

yes these are pretty handy ... We have to do the same for our little lab (the runt of the litter) she is a real vacuum... some people suggest flooding her with food and always keep her bole full to break that habit, and show her she would never run out and can take her time... I don't have the heart to do it to her... what is your thought about this method? ...I think it can work or cause issue to the dog, it be one or the other in my opinion....

Smart dog.

He has numerous toys he transfers in and outside. He never brought that golf ball back inside.

He did being in a rabbit hind leg once and left it on our bed. He wasn't called smart when that happened. Lol

The only time we've ever only had one dog is when I first met my wife (a awesome yellow lab). Because we've generally always had multiple dogs in the house, our only method has been two feedings a day (portion appropriate to dog size) one in the morning, and one in the late afternoon.

Currently now with 6 dogs, I honestly don't think I could keep a bowl filled 24/7 LOL.

I don't know this for a fact as I never tried it, but like you, I think you could actually cause a bigger issue by keep food out 24/7.

Please don't try this. Especially with a Lab. They are predispositioned to always be hungry. Most dogs will only eat until they are "full". Labs will eat until they founder.

We rescue labs. We currently have 3, having just lost our oldest one to kidney failure. You can quite easily over feed a Lab to the point of a serious medical emergency.
