Hang in there... vacation is coming!!

I feel like I'm counting down the days, hours and minutes until family vacation. Last year, I had to leave the family early and fly home to attend to work matters. I missed horseback riding on the beach with my girls, playing in the waves and surf fishing. It really ruined the summer for me and has stuck in my craw ever since last summer.

This year, no excuses! We have friends house sitting for us so the animals and house are taken care of. Work?, screw them! If they can't last a week without me, then shame on them. This year it's about enjoying time with the wife and kids, everything will just have to wait it's turn. Life's too short to miss family vacation!

My goal is for us to catch a nice redfish and cook him "on the halfshell", along with some roasted corn and stuffed peppers over an open fire on the beach. Then we'll watch the moon take it's place in the night sky as we cook a cobbler :licking: and listen to the surf rolling in to wash away all our life's worries.

Come on vacation!!... just a little longer...

I remember one year my wife and I went camping and weren't going to be reachable for a week. My old boss about had a cow. He asked how he could get in touch with me in an emergency. I told him to tie a note onto a box turtle and maybe I'd find it.... that didn't go over too well. :confused3:

I never get vacation any more, my bosses (Me, Myself and I) are constantly with me. Such are the problems of retirement

I refuse to answer my phone when I'm on vacation, and when I do check emails and messages, I rarely reply unless it's just to say I wont be back until a few days after I'm actually back home. Where are you headed? Karen and I are going to head up to the Ozarks for a week next month just to get away and do some exploring.

We're headed to Corpus Christi for a week. Shellie's dad has a couple of rental properties there and we're staying at a 2 bedroom on the beach. I'll stop for a night at the deer camp in Mason on the way down to fill feeders. Maybe I'll get lucky and shoot a pig. It'd be nice to cook a hind quarter on the beach some night.

I have my surf and inshore rods packed and ready.

I've always wanted to go to the Ozarks. I've never been anywhere southwest of St. Louis and east of Arizona. The whole area of Arkansas and northeast Texas looks interesting. What's to do in the Ozarks?

We can get to Hot Springs in about 4 hours, and there seems to be enough to do there to last us a day. Then we are going to head up to the Missouri state line and explore some caverns, cliffs, rivers and maybe look for elk. Branson is just a little farther North, and neither of us has been there, so maybe go there too. Karen is half Cherokee and her family lives on both sides of Oklahoma and Arkansas. They don't get along, they resent her success and all her degrees where most of them never finished high school and they are dirt poor. I doubt we will visit any of them, but I am curious to see the area. Not sure if she is up to it or not, there are a lot of bad memories for her of the Reservation and how they treated her mom when she left there.

Karen's last day at the hospital is the end of the month and she starts teaching at the University a couple weeks later, so it's going to be a quick trip just to get away, see some new scenery and and hopefully get a break from the heat and humidity of East Texas.

I've never been there. In fact, the farthest South I've been in Texas is San Antonio. Never been to Houston or anywhere on the coast. Good luck with the fishing, I have friends that go all the time for the fishing and they seem to do good from what I see on their pics on FB. Are you going to fish from the beach or go out on a boat?

Pretty similar to my experience. My sister-in-law is 100% Micmac indian (a Canadian tribe). All of her family moved to the reservation in Canada because they give better handouts then the US welfare system. When my brother passed away, the reservation gave each of them a stipend to attend the funeral. The relative that drove them down was given an additional amount to cover his driving. He in-turn made each of the passengers give him an additional percent of their stipend so he could make more money off of them. I have no use for any of them and we avoid them entirely.

The trip to Arkansas sounds nice. It's a beautiful state!

We just canceled our plans. Karen has two weeks between jobs and we thought a road trip would be nice, but she feels she needs the time to work on her PhD, so we are going the be responsible and probably not do anything this year.

On a totally different topic, our hides finally made it to the tannery!!!!

The animals we shot in South Africa back in August 2014. It took six months just to get all the permits to export them, then another couple months to get to the US. I just found out today that they are at the tannery, so that's a huge relief.

Have fun, its hot. Stay close to water. And travel with an ice chest full of drinks. I like Corpus Christi. Sorry but not much help on recent tourist attractions. I have been to the Aquarium, but not lately. I hear the aircraft carrier is nice.

That's a relief. My taxidermist called me yesterday to get final instructions on a couple of our animals. He'll be doing the tahr similar to this one, but with more moss on the rocks. He thinks he'll have all the Africa game completed by August 21 and the New Zealand game will be shortly after. The checkbook will be taking a hit.
