Did you retire from the Army or AF?

When I retired from the AF, I was stationed at Elmendorf AFB.

I had a great job offer and me and the kids wanted to stay.

The little woman being from Alabama said that she hated having to wear a sweater or light coat to even go on a picnic in the summer and that she was returning to the lower 48 with or without me. The kids tried to talk me into staying since they wanted to stay, but here I am.

Served USMC in the '60's, but retired from civilian government job. Lived in anchorage in the '80's, now on the Kenai Peninsula. I know a lot of people who, after living here for a couple of years, decided to go "back home". Usually they returned here within a year. There's a saying up here, if you decide to move to the lower 48 don't sell your house yet, because you'll probably be back.

I can imagine that is true. I live in Northern Michigan and love being away from people and having space to breath. I have a feeling if I went to Alaska I would then have the itch to move there. It's probably best for my marriage that I not visit

Do you use your equipment just for personal or business?

I work mostly for myself. Bought a piece of wilderness and had to do everything, including putting in a road, excavating, clearing land, building, septic system, etc. I do some work for neighbors at cost, no profit.

My brother lives in East Jordan.

So, what did you do when you were up there in the 80's?

I would NEVER go Salmon fishing on the Kenai but it was beautiful there in the summer.

It was normally a nice trip down to Soldotna or Homer for my daughter's basketball games if the weather wasn't to bad. One time coming back from a game at Soldotna, I hit a snow berm on the stretch of the Seward Highway just west of Placer River crossing and was lucky that we didn't end up down in the creek.

Yeah, I know that stretch of highway; very long, straight, and most vehicles are doing 75mph or more since they raised the limit to 65.

You probably know that Elmendorf is now combined with Fort Richardson (JBER, joint base Elmendorf-Richardson).

You probably know that Elmendorf is now combined with Fort Richardson (JBER, joint base Elmendorf-Richardson).

Yes I know that they are now JBER. They actually shared some things back when I was there, like the hospital. You could also go from base to post without having to go out on highway 1.
