Nice early evening light illuminates the pellet transfer from the Presque Isle to the Great Republic. The Presque Isle has an unspecified issue that they need to get at by raising it higher out of the water. This is coming on the heels of the pellet transfer between the American Integrity and American Century about a week ago. The odds of two lightering operations at the port within a week, or even a year, is rare. Duluth, MN - June 9, 2025

Vibe with Mike has an excellent YT Video om them (Fraser Shipyard) working on the boat, they have the bow ballast tanks mostly flooded to raise the stern out of the water, exposing the rudder, which they are working on... Stands to reason in as much as she almost hit the retaining wall a couple days prior. It was noted they were having a steerage issue

When I worked as a Longshoreman at GW Industries, that is how we worked on and installed new bow thrusters, we flooded the aft tanks which raised the bow and so we coud cut through the hull plates and install bow thrusters.

All large vessels have segmented bilge tanks, used for stability and keeping the vessel level. Salties have more advanced bilge tanks but same principle.

Interlake Maritime Services continues to be actively engaged in the response to the grounding of the M/V Hon. James L. Oberstar on the St. Marys River which occurred on June 8. We are working in full cooperation and coordination with the appropriate authorities, including the United States Coast Guard (USCG), the third-party OSRO, salvage response teams, and other key stakeholders to ensure a safe and effective resolution.
To streamline response efforts, a Unified Command led by the USCG is being established to coordinate actions, assess the situation, and implement the best course of action. Interlake’s Incident Response Team has been on-site since the initial incident, actively supporting operations.
The safety of our crew, the protection of the environment, and the integrity of our operations remain our top priorities. All crew members are safe and no injuries have been reported. The vessel is in stable condition and any potential pollution concerns are ongoing. We appreciate the diligence and professionalism of all agencies involved in this response.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the United States Coast Guard for their swift and dedicated efforts, as well as to the OSRO, salvage response teams, and all personnel working tirelessly to resolve this incident safely.

The Honorable James L. Oberstar was making the turn at Johnson’s Point on the Saint Mary’s River when it grounded just before 4 p.m. The company says the Oberstar had more than 29,000 net tons of stone on board as it headed to Marquette. All crew members are safe and no injuries have been reported.

Now, the Interlake Steamship Company says it is working in full cooperation and coordination with the appropriate authorities, including the United States Coast Guard (USCG), the third-party OSRO, salvage response teams, and other key stakeholders to ensure a safe and effective resolution.

Side issue, murder suicide deaths on the Isle.

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - The National Park Service is trying to identify two people found dead at Isle Royale National Park - a remote island in Lake Superior near Upper Michigan’s border with Canada.

The NPS says around 4:00 p.m. Sunday, park rangers received two separate reports of two people found dead at a remote backcountry campground within the park.

Two rangers hiked overnight 11 miles to the campground to assess the situation, arriving early Monday morning, confirming two unidentified people were dead. The causes of death are unknown at this time.

Additional ground and aviation resources responded starting Monday. The deaths are currently under investigation. The NPS says more information will be released as it is made available.

The NPS has declined TV6′s interview request at this time, but a spokesperson said the deaths are not connected to an apparent arrest that was captured on video last week by U.P. Adventure Company.
