Views by David Kaye of Canadian ice breaker CCGS Amundsen passing USCGC Mackinaw at the west pier of the Soo locks. While ice isn't an issue at the western end of the lake, it is still prevalent in Whitefish Bay on the eastern end. G3 Marquis is downbound.— in Sault Ste. Marie.

J.F. Brennan has started dredging of the area along the recently rebuilt seawall behind the DECC (convention center). They are dredging to a depth of 26 feet to allow cruise ships to dock here with the first arrival scheduled for the first week of June. Wren Works is assisting and will also be placing very large seasonal non-scuff foam fenders for docking. Duluth, MN - March 31, 2025 Not sure what 1000footer is leaving in this pic.

The tug Reliance tows a log raft through the Sabin Lock Soo MI, with the assistance of another unidentified tug.
The wooden (one source said composite) hulled tug was built in 1892 at Collingwood, and worked for a variety of owners rafting logs on Lake Superior, including Lake Superior Paper Company, Joseph Ganley, and Abitibi Power and Paper Company. It was stranded near the Lizard Islands on Lake Superior in December 1922, but was salvaged and appears to have been active into the mid-1940's.

We got a blizzard and wind happening here today. Boats are off the lake and the Algoma Equinox is anchored on the NW shore of the Kewee.

3/30 - PERE MARQUETTE 41 & UNDAUNTED arrived at Manistee MI at 0158 this morning, marking the first arrival of the 2025 shipping season. The pair delivered slag from Burns Harbor, IN to the Rieth-Riley dock. They intend to remain in town until Monday evening, due to weather. What would they do with slag?

CGC SPAR freed the laker John J. Boland while they were stuck in a massive ice flow within Whitefish Bay, Lake Superior early this week. SPAR used special tactics for a direct assist to closely approach the vessel on all sides to successfully free them from the ice and escort them to safety. Slag is commonly used as an aggregate for road beds if it is a combination of 1" down to fines. Specific sizes are used to replace similar sized gravel in some applications. The slag is primarily limestone and impurities from the blast furnaces.
Back in the 70s, I hauled many loads out of The Levy Company, next door to Bethlehem Steel in Gary. In fact, the base for my driveway is #53 slag I picked up there.

Edit: Here's a picture of my dad on a TD15 pushing slag that we kept stockpiled in our yard. The slag was a gray color, if it doesn't come across in the picture.

We use slag for road base around here. I have about 100 tons in my driveway as well.
