The deep winter frost here pushes up rocks into the road surface. Every spring there is a new crop. Any that will stop my grader blade or snow plow I pull out. This one only had a knub showing but felt solid. You never know what lies unseen underneath.

Kubota M5640 and FrostBite Grapple.

@Gordon Gould, those are big rocks. Now you have a hole. I think you need a jack hammer attachment for your tractor, and just make gravel

Nice job!!! Find a few more of those and you could build a stone patio.

Interesting rock. Around here a rock of that size would be more rounded. That one looks like it was fractured off of a big brother down under.

We have all sizes and shapes of rock here. Nothing is what I would call typical. The top layer of earth is glacial till down to about 20 feet and most surface rocks come from that. Below the till is a couple hundred feet of shale bed rock. It has vertical grain from being folded up when a piece that broke off of Africa collided with America eons ago. The Connecticut River is in that fault line and is about 5 miles from here. Where the shale comes to the surface it is either ledge or like this.

The big glacial rocks can be rounded or angular. I have no shortage of them.

Gordon, very cool. Interesting lesson in regional geology!

Looks like you have the right tool for this!

Thanks for the comments. I find that stuff interesting too.

Thanks - that FrostBite grapple works well for me and what I do. Light, narrow, strong, and capable.

Ah, finally this thread surfaces again!

After using my Landpride SGC0660, I'll never be without a FEL and grapple again! It makes taking down trees and limbs a trivial undertaking.
Only negative I have to say about it is that the grease zerks came out when I tried to grease it. No biggie, just need to clean the threads up and screw them in tightly.

20240430_062722.jpg This pile shows the potential advantage of grapple mounted on forks, vs a conventional grapple. With forks I could flip the logs off the end of the tongs, tossing them to the back of the pile for a taller stack. That would have resulted in it being 8 feet tall all of the way back, rather than just in the front.

Pallet forks with a matching grapple is easily the most useful tool I've ever bought for a tractor,

Resized-20240312-132531-S.jpg

From sorting logs out of a pile,

Resized-20231220-142003-S.jpg

then loading them on the deck of my sawmill or trailer,

Resized-20230307-152957-S.jpg

to taking loads of slabs or lumber away from the mill,

Resized-20221114-123233-S.jpg

to holding firewood logs while they are being cut to firewood length,

Resized-20220815-120547-S.jpg

to moving/loading all the brush or limb wood,

Resized-20230805-113600-S.jpg

to moving the boxes of splits to the drying area,

Resized-20221028-154604-S.jpg

Even prying boulders right out of the ground and moving them out of the way,

and a thousand "other" things they do amazingly well, MUCH more useful that a dedicated grapple.

I broke my Titan pallet forks digging a rock out. I can buy a new backing plate but am not a proficient enough welder to make a safe repair.

Yeaaa, you have to buy "good stuff" if you are going to be prying, HLA makes some good forks!

You can't buy "price" if you want good stuff!

Take yours to a welding shop...

This isn’t that uncommon. A lot of forks have been bent by trying to use them for digging out rocks and brush/stumps. The owner I bought my tractor from bent my forks doing the same thing.
