I gave up on digging out stumps. Cheaper and way easier to grind them. Plus you don't have a big eyesore stump left.

That is what I do. $350 for a grinder for a day/ 8 hours on the hour meter.

I had this tree most of the way out but could not get it so I cut a couple roots with the grinder and pushed it out. Digging stumps is hard on a tractor.

Digging stumps is not only hard on the tractor. It leaves a big hole which I need to haul in dirt to fill, and leaves a ugly stump to dispose of. I paid a guy to grind about a dozen stumps most 20" plus, and I think he only charged $250.

$1500 later and:

Grinding is the way to go for sure on the bigger stuff. I still pull trees under 8" because grinding those are more of a pain than leveling out the divot.

I always try to push down tree, including the root ball. Just a small hole to fill and no stump to grind or dig out.

That doesn't work very good for live trees. Especially with a smaller tractor.

That's what I do too, at least for smaller and medium sized trees. A ripper attachment on a backhoe makes pretty quick work of lateral roots and then it just takes a bit of pushing. The "divot" is much smaller than if you dig out a stump.

I only take out dead trees so, works fine for me. I have no need to remove a live tree?

I'm clearing a house and shop site - 7500sf of land to turn into buildings, plus roads to service trucks, etc. Most of what I'm taking out is live.

I try to take out trees before they get to that point of dead. If they don't put out leafs in the spring I cut them. I have several live trees that are slowly dying at the top and are dangerous to be around that get cut. I have cut several trees that were perfectly healthy, but were too close to the house. I have several hickory tress that are over 20" and are too close to the house. I have been dreading that job. My firewood stack is still pretty good. 😀
