Gotta Ask--Tuner

I've got 2017 2500HD with the Duramax L5P. It has been great so far. I bought it with just under 14k on it. It now has a little over 18k. We don't drive it unless we are towing. From my understanding, these still can't be deleted and the only programmers that can be used on them are "inline." so in theory it should be able to be unplugged without leaving any footprint. BTW, I bought mine last June. It was right at 13 months old. It went into service May of 2017. It is only an LT, so it is missing several bells and whistles the LTZ would have, but I got it 46k. I then got a 7 year/100k bumper to bumper warranty for $1100. It still had the 2 free GM oil changes left on it. I just did the first one a couple weeks ago. I will do the second one April 30th even though it won't have many miles on this oil change.

From what I have seen and read one of the biggest reasons for getting a tune is to shut the EGR systems down.
That will let the engine run much cleaner internally and the oil will stay cleaner.
The intake manifolds even get carboned up with soot from the egr.
My little ecodiesel has about the dirtiest looking oil I have ever seen in a motor, it gets dirty looking faster then
my old Oliver 1550 with the Rossa Master injection system did which had been turned up a bit.

I used mine to turn off the check engine light due to me removing the EGR valve and welding the cooler shut. And of course to add power, don't know if they still do but they detuned and left a lot of power on the table. My 7.3 444CI was a beast tuned up and never had any ill effects at all. If helped the 6.0's in a big way as well..

My SHO is tuned by Gearhead in TX, Matt does an awesome job with the ecoboost, adds 50hp to the 365 it already had.

Everything I've read about the L5P. It is a different beast from an electronics standpoint than anything else ever produced. If we want to do secure computing, we use 128-bit encryption. I've heard that GM used 2048-bit encryption on the computer to these trucks - thus why no one has been able to delete them yet. They can only do the inline programmers. I've heard rumors that folks have been able to crack it and get into it, but have yet to actually see anything that says they have. Banks and everyone just says coming soon. And given the fine that BullyDog got socked with back in November, I don't know that any of them are too anxious to hop on that band wagon on these newer engines.

Edge got whacked a couple of years ago also. I think it was about 1/2 million dollars in fines.

In addition to paying the $300,000 penalty, the company must spend an estimated $6.25 million to bring their products up to snuff.

Diesel trucks that are not equipped with emission controls known as “diesel particulate filters” emit excess particulate matter (PM). When running, trucks without these types of controls leave behind a trail of dark, black smoke. PM is associated with a number of health problems, including respiratory and cardiovascular disease, chronic bronchitis, decreased lung function, and an increased risk of lung cancer.

Lightly looking at a 2017 Chevy LTZ 2500 Duramax. Since it has aftermarket tail lights (why?) and some other stuff, I asked if it had a tuner. Dealer (honestly) said yes for MPG (What all people say)...Anyway..It has 21k on it and I certainly don't want to have a voided 100k warranty due to it having been tuned .

I think the warranty is shot--Opinions?

They are asking market for it, so no great deal although there might be some room on it--The truck is mint though. Thinking I should look elsewhere--Not sure I even need/want a diesel anyway since the 6.0 and the 6.6 have similar towing capacity and that's really what I'm after.

1. Hard to believe the prvious owner traded it in without removing the tune and told the dealer.
2. Even harder to believe the dealer is aware of the tune and hasn't removed it.
3. Since the dealer admits it has a tune, EVEN IF REMOVED AND PUT BACK TO FACTORY WILL THEY HONOR THE FACTORY WARRANTY If something goes wrong if you buy it and they know it was tuned? If not then walk away.
4. Price seems a little high based on what jwstewar paid for his.

Problem is, it's an Alpha Romeo/Dodge dealer..The dealer called the previous owner and he said there was a tune in it, good for him and the dealer for being honest with me....Since it's not a GM dealer, I'm thinking I'm on my own. Price is higher because it's an LTZ. That adds some pesos.
