Nature gets imbalanced sometimes. Even with hawks, coyotes, snakes, bobcats, and owls hunting them some years there are too many gophers. Other years too many squirrels or rabbits. I leave them alone unless they come up in the lawn - then it's war! Last year I was digging em up some and then sucking them out with a big shop vac - lol. Works good if you discover them early.
After 2 wet winters I know we will have an infestation of something.
If you use a flail mower the hammers and rear roller do a fair job of knocking the big mounds down.
