Goose neck vs bumper pull

My old 25+5 weighed 6400#. It had dual 12K axles and a 25,000# gvwr.

My 28+4 20K dual wheel no ramps weighs 6800. I scaled truck/trailer, then unhooked and scaled truck to get that number.

All I'm saying is think it out. I didn't in 2000 and bought a 25 plus 5 GN. Sold it 3 years later. Loss of bed space and inability to pull with our two SUV's made that decision for me.

Ive got three trailers right now and need another one which will replace two. So I'll still have two after its all over.

I have been browsing GN trailers. When the time comes, I was considering an adapter plate that uses the rails in the truck. Like this link.

Otherwise, I thought the disadvantage to a 5th wheel hitch on a utility trailer is motion is limited, which may affect folks who drive off road, in fields etc.

Even though there is more weight on the hitch, its effets on the truck are less cause its directly over the axles. A bumper pull that hitches several feet behind the axle gives the trailer lots of leverage.

Think of putting a pallet of whatever right at the back of the truck (half on the tailgate) vs shoving it all the way to the front of the bed. Same weight, big difference in how the suspension handles it.

One thing to keep in mind too, is GN's turn short and cut corners. You need WIDE driveway approaches to get into and out of. If you have a narrow drive, you may either have to change that, or stick with BP

Amen on narrow driveways. Backing a GN is a whole new world and if the Driveway is at all narrow and curved you need way wider ...

I think it all comes down to weight and length if your 22ft and under, less than 10k stay with the bumper pull. Over 24ft and up go with the gooseneck. Just my two cents. (well may not even be worth two cents)

Brett,
I didn't get it. They started the bidding at my "high" price and it went up to $2000. I would have went on and bid higher.........but this one is in pieces and is missing all hardware to assemble. It also had a frame crack near the tongue. I wanted it, but have too many projects as it is now. I was going to fix it up and resale it. As it was.............disassembled...........it would have taken up all my dual tandem trailer's footage. I need a longer trailer!
But all is not lost.............timed bidding continues tomorrow. Yippee!

I pull my 28 GN with an 02 GMC dually with Duramax. Even with the trailblazer loaded it does a super job. I load it to 14,000 on the axles and I think the total weight for truck and trailer full was around 23,800, on my last load. I'm not sure what the truck is rated for but that had to be close to maxing it out, but maybe not. The truck is 7500 and the trailer is 6000 approx so that leaves 10,300 for weight on the trailer. That doesn't seem like much, but maybe my math is fuzzy.

Isn't it crazy what people will pay for equipment!!! In my territory I'd have struggled to pay $2K if it was field ready!!!! I bought a light duty 12ft tandem wheel disc from the local scrap yard for $128. It needed two bearings replaced. Tires even held air and are useable. I used it a lot last Fall doing some seeding.

With loader, boxblade(#1100) or brush hog the weight I think is between #7500- #8000. Trailer is about #3000. Tongue weight was about #1100. Even though it is within limits the last time I drove 1500 miles it was very nerve racking to drive and not comfortable. I also had about #500 in the bed of the truck.

Sounds like the perfect use case for a WD hitch.

Given you already have the trailer, and its going to be lighter overall weight than GN version. Id stick with what you ahve and add a good WD hitch. It makes a world of difference on my E350 van.
