Everything else seems to be working, which leads me to believe that it is some sort of browser hijack that is preventing me from getting to google.com. On the other hand, it's happening on both of my computers, the desktop and the laptop, so if it's some sort of worm or virus, it's malicious enough to travel over my network. I haven't tried my wife's notebook, yet.

It's really acting like the google site is down, however. Anyone else having problems?

No problems with Goggle. Try Yahoo.
Do you have Security set at a high level?

What error message are you getting?

DNS, Cannot find server. Doesn't matter if I use the google toolbar or try to go to google.com. Yahoo and other searches work from the IE search button but Google is not offered as an alternative -- guess they didn't bribe MS enough.

Well, maybe it really was down somewhere. They may have mirror sites or something, At any rate, it's working again, and I didn't do anything.

Whatever Domain Name Server your ISP goes to was apparently down or not updated properly. I see the same error from time to time but it is usually corrected within a few hours unless there has been a hugh denial of srevice attack somewhere.

Haven't had problems with Google, but for me eBay has been virtually inaccessible over the past four days - Cannot find server errors.

The way to get around that is to just type in the IP address of the site. Then you bypass the DNS server. All the DNS server does is translate the "Name" into an "Address", just like a telephone book.

The way to get around that is to just type in the IP address of the site.

For example: Google.com is http://216.239.41.99

Not sure the easiest way to determine a site's IP address, but I go to the Start Menu and select Run... then I type in cmd into the dialog box, which brings up the DOS command window.

From the DOS prompt just type in PING nameOfWebsite.com (e.g. ping google.com)

You will see the Reply from IP address. That is the actual address of the website.

Another thing to try when a site seems to be down is to run (also from the DOS prompt):

TRACERT nameOfWebsite.com

This will show you all the hops between you and the site's server. Usually when you can't get to a site, one of the hop's times out -- and that is where the problem lies. That's why some people can get access to websites when you can't -- because their route to the website is differernt from yours.

Thanks, Dave. It worked for a while last night, then quit again. It's not working this morning. Moreover, when I searched using Yahoo or any other search engine, then tried to link to the resulting sites from the search, my computer almost froze up, and IE reported malfunctions and quit.

I can still get to several sites, like TBN, that I use regularly, and to any site other than Google that I type in directly rather than link from a search engine.

I used the direct link in your message to Google, got into it cleanly, and was able to link out of it to any site. So, that proves that something is messing up either in my ISP's name server or in my computer. The fact that it comes and goes sems to indicate that my ISP (adelphia.net broadband cable) is having problems with it's name servers.
