Good quality hydro pump advice needed..

Hello,

I'm getting ready to repower my old log splitter.

I've decided on a 5 or 5.5 HP Honda engine. I'm not sure about which pump manufacture to buy.

I would like a high quality American made pump and engine to pump mounting bracket. Any advice on what manufacture to use?

Haldex/Barnes, MTE,Concentric are USA made. Most of the alluminum body pumps are imports.

I don't know how/what cheap is, but that is what I found.

I think you might find the 5 hp too small for a 11 gpm 2 stage pump. 8 hp would be better suited for it.
The two stage pumps operate faster on the return stroke or no load stroke, but slow down for the power stroke (actual splitting).
Years ago I was doing the same and was buying from Northern Tool- when it was Northern Hydraulic (pre internet days). They had a ton of info- charts etc to figure out requirements.

The 5.5 hp will work. I feel this is marginable hp myself and would prefer not to cut it so close on power. Notice 5hp is the minimum. HarborFreight has the 6.5 Predator on sale right now for $99. thier bigger engine is on sale for $299, not sure of the HP. I bought one to use on my tater digger. It cranked out of the box on about the third pull. I think the Predator engine is basicly a Chinese Honda clone. Dont know if you can compare the quality between the two engines, but I havent noticed any reason to regret my purchase.

Yes, I believe they are metric, and you need to find the depth of the threads.

Look at the drawings for that motor, it probably has the bolt size illustrated.

5 - M8 x 1.25 15Deep (S type)

Yes a 5.5 Honda is actually a little stronger that a comparable gas engine. So if it requires 5 hp gas it will be enough + CJ
