That's the funny thing... I dump these in the creek, then buy walnuts at the store. They're such a terrible mess to husk, that it's just not worth the trouble to DIY them.

I rigged a few Bag-a-Nut pickers to my ZTR. They're great in concept, but the implementation must have been handed over to someone who learned mechanical engineering from Sesame Street. Absolutely terrible designs, both their original (on front of ZTR) and their newer design (back of ZTR). I keep getting inspired to make my own, but time doesn't exist for such projects, these days.

Yes.
That's a neat walnut pickup setup you have there!

I prefer black walnuts or butternuts over the english walnuts that we have around here (and in the store).

I remember trying to dry and shell black walnuts when I was younger, and boy did we make messes. I then met some folks who used a dedicated pot to boil the black walnuts in water for half an hour or so. It gets the black stain off the outside, and they become far easier to open. IIRC, don't plan to use the pot for anything else ever again, and crack what you cook promptly.

Here's what the commercial folks use around here. Similar idea, but perhaps a bit of of engineering beyond Sesame Street;
2560px-FLORY_34_Series_Nut_Sweeper-8976.jpg

(You can see the grafts on each stump between the black walnut root stock and the english walnut trunk.)

We are getting smoked by the Moon complex fire in Oregon that is on a tear in some very rugged countryside. Indoor day.

All the best,

Peter

Dad always put black walnuts in the driveway where everyone turns around, let them run over them to get the outer husk off. Dad did plant a couple english walnut trees in the yard, don't think we go much from them. They he would crack them with a hammer or vice to get the nut out. We don't use enough black walnuts to go to all that trouble. I did buy a walnut cracker, but don't use it.

cool but humid. got the front brakes done on the pilot, not as bad as expected. Did have trouble getting the caliper bolt out at first, then pulled out the 1/2" impact, and it had no trouble. Also used it for removing tires and pre installing lugs after. Think it took little over an hour, including rounding up the tools. Even torqued everything to spec. I used to go by feel, but now that I have a collection of torque wrenches, might as well use them.

But that wore me out. I just can't seem to do much for very long any more.

Have an outdoor wedding to attend at 4 pm, rain or shine they said. Will be taking umbrellas, as rain is forecasted from now till 8 pm.

70°F and no rain. Passing showers forecast

Good day mowing yesterday. About 15 minutes left of the front. I quit when Sophie’s EGO Z turn said 5% power as I don’t know how low you can go and still make it back to the shed. Will finish that today depending on wx.

Dropped the Canadians at airport. Will take them almost 24 hours to get home due to flight changes. T has her knee replacement in 2 weeks. Can’t get medical coverage to return until 3 months after Dr clearance. Dave hoping to return possibly Dec.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

Did go by Lambert's in Sikeston MO on our way back, but line was too long
20250913_113845__vac_MO_Lambert_CairoBridge.JPG

So we crossed the Mississippi and the Ohio Rivers at Cairo IL, and stopped at a little BBQ stand on the other side in KY, next to the sign about LaSalle

77F and partly cloudy @ 12:30, calling for a high of 78F for the day with light and variable winds. Low this morning was 53.3F.

Refilled hopper feeder first thing yesterday, also scattered some seed for the ground feeders.

After that I hooked up the core aerator to the Cub and got the front lawn all done.

Good thing I didn't wait on that - the ground was really not all that moist considering we recently got 3" of rain. No standing water anywhere and tires only damp in a few areas.

Moved filled Water Buffalo over into the shade by the arbs in preparation for watering tomorrow.

Then back to working on post holes.

Got a few more of those bailed and mucked out. Quite the collection of frogs in the buckets with water in them in the holes.

On agenda for today:

Set first 12' round post in the northeast corner hole, get it leveled and braced, and start back-filling it.

The dirt for back-filling it (and the other holes) was loose and got rained on ... so basically it turned into mud ... 🤬

All of that will need to be broken up so it can dry out some.

But for the first hole I have a large pile of dirt over in the barn that has been drying out for several years. Will grab a bucket of that and mix some of it in ... so the corner post isn't getting set in mud (which can't really be compacted)

Will be interesting getting the post set into the hole ... the 12' round posts weigh close to 100 lbs each ... doubt I have the strength to lift them up and tip them into the holes ... :(

So the loader on the Kubota may be my helper on that.

There are a couple of small black locust trees near the location of the southeast corner post that I need to remove so that hole can be drilled. Should be able to rip those out with the loader and a chain.

And I need to extend the string line for the south perimeter ... which will involve The Woman sighting the string line for when it touches an already set piece of rebar.

Before I can do that though I need to take the Stihl FS66 and cut the weeds down to the ground where the line will run so I can mark the post locations.

Hope everyone is having a decent Saturday ... (y)

Good (Sunday) morning. Overnight Low of 3.1C and it's presently 12.8C [heading to 15C], fairly clear & calm.

Glad that the wind has abated... at least for now. One wattle tree branch/trunk split and down. That's the only damage seen so far but I'll see when I leave for Church.

Which will happen in a few minutes (I'm 'leading' the morning prayer service) and then the rest of the day is His.

That's about it, take care all.

64F and clear @ 20:45, heading down to around 56F for the overnight low.

Got those two black locust saplings pulled up with the loader.

After that grabbed three 2 x 4's from along the south fence line and brought those around to the hole for the northeast corner post to use as braces.

Swapped out the bucket for the forks and brought down the 12' round post.

Then swapped out the forks for the bucket and went over into the barn and got a bucketful of that dry dirt.

Cleaned out the bottom of the post hole with the manual post hole digger.

No issue with just grabbing the end of the post and tipping it up and into the hole without using the loader. Seems like they have really dried out and lost a lot of weight.

Had The Woman pick up another can of marking paint while She was out.

After that braced the post up and got it vertical and started filling the hole with soil.

Used a good amount of the dry soil from the barn initially, to soak up any moisture that was down there in the hole and then started using the spoil from the post holes.

Turns out most of that wasn't as wet as I thought it might be, just about the right moisture level to compact well.

Worked in 3" to 6" lifts, using the digging bar to tamp it down.

Got the hole filled and compacted to within an inch of grade:

IMG_3878 copy.jpg

Will finish it up tomorrow.

Woman yelled out about then asking if I was ready to eat and should She start fixing the BLT's ... told Her yup I'd be in, in a few minutes.

Must have worked up an appetite ... I had four ...

Hope everyone had a decent day ... (y)

Good Morning,
Ct, 62 to start going to 80 or so. Looks like fall will be really moving in within a couple of days. By midweek much different pattern will be here.

Church this morning and then it looks like another Lego session with my grandson. Good time yesterday at the radio club meeting, informative discussion on Winlink.

Good time with the grandkids yesterday. We took them to a park with a playground and then later out to eat at my grandsons favorite restaurant. He loves the chips and quacamole there. Then we went to oldest son’s house and had a campfire there. Kids had a ball, s’mores and all 😃. Adults had wine 😉

We have to take the kids to their soccer game this afternoon and then we are heading to Vermont. I need to replace the gas valve and thermopile, thermocouple and igniter assembly on the Dovre stove. Also need to cut up all the old decking and get it to the burn pile. And if I have some extra time I will bush hog part of the field, I don’t think I have time to do it all.
Looks like no radio time until later in the week. The next time we go back up there I’m hoping to get back into the sculptured rocking chair project.

I guess that’s about it for now, hope everyone has a blessed day 🙏

65 going to 78...went outside a little while ago and surprised to see a sky full of stars...it was cloudy and drizzly all day yesterday, and the forecast had been rain for next few days...maybe up to 7 inches from the tropical storm...seem like that's not coming, so spotty showers tomorrow only.

Yesterday's rain caused our trip to Charlotteville to go picking apples at the Carter Mountain orchard to get cancelled...it was our granddaughter's 2nd birthday "party."

Instead, we went over to some friends' daughter's new home to look at the cool new features...it was just completed and they haven't moved in yet...never seen a kitchen island so big...covered with a solid slab of polished granite. My wife was drooling...planning on redoing our kitchen. It was the tightest built house I've seen.

Then home to roast 3 batches of coffee...trying one now...I think I should have bought more green beans of this one...an El Salvador origin.

Morning all! 59 going to a sunny 80 today.
Steve,
BTW, don’t be telling my wife how much money I’m spending ! 😂
Sounds like wood working tools!

Spent the week picking up leaves a few hours each day. Like Thomas I use the back pack blower to get them in a pile then use a snow shovel and rake to scoop into the wheel barrow. Not enough down to fire up the leaf vac yet.
Went to the hospital for testing. Think I will be getting another MRI in the future! Have an appointment with a pain doc about getting a shot in the sore area. Am also starting a search for a good neck surgeon. Hand arthritis is up and down but manageable.

No sister this morning as she caught a cold from her great nephew. She feels ok but doesn't want to bring it here. I'm ok with that.

Busy week ahead with lot's of appointments and a few breakfast visits with friends and relatives.
Plus daily leaf pick up I'm sure.

This weeks projects:
17 inch platter. Natural image looks like a seascape with mountains. I added a small sun to the back around my logo.

That's it for now. Coffee time!
Hope everyone stays safe and healthy!

good morning all
late start
coffee and friend's organic vegan carrot muffins hit the spot warmed up.
what a nice way to start the day

first they said morning rain, then morning shower, then morning nothing.
We are at nothing which means another sunny day.
.05 on the gauge only qualifies to leave spots on my car, that gets washed this morning.

time for a long hot soak in shower and then will put backbrace back on. I have a lot to get done, lot of walking
and up and down stairs so need to be extra careful I don't mess it up before leaving.
the promised call from pain doc never happened last week, so left on my own.
I'm back to no extra pills and wearing some armor, so that's fine by me.
Surgeon thinks I need to just be drugged up. Makes you feel goofy and stupid.
looking for another alternative. Thankfully my hot shower really works.

you know a muffin is good when you go back and look for every crumb on the plate. 👍

ah, there he goes again, opened kitchen window and heard:
🐓
