I started full time work after school when I was 15 and lived at the work place with room and board. This was in Denmark where apprentices serve 4 years and in my case it was at a fix it all mechanics, blacksmith shop. The old blacksmith was a tough taskmaster and had huge biceps and was 6ft 6 tall. When he was forging some big pieces he would get us kids 3 of us down in the Smitty and we would hit the iron with sledges on one side of the anvil and he would set the tempo with regular hammer on the other side of the anvil. And he was yelling at us all the time to keep up the speed before the iron cooled. The early days of this was hard but when I got more strength and endurance it was fun and since working and living together we got very close
Since you all are sharing stories thought you may enjoy some of mine

Fritz, my paternal grandfather was a blacksmith. Unfortunately I never got to see him work and he passed when I was still in school.

Thought a lot about Randy while on the trail today...the many things I learned from his posts, the places we had each spent time in Virginia and NC, and what great spirit he had.

I stopped at this place to say a prayer for Randy, Linda, Ellen, and the rest of his family...and all of the special people here that share like he did.

RIP Randy! Way to young!
Beautiful day here with sunny skies and in the 70's! Tonight dropping to the 40's!!
Still laying low as I recuperate from the surgery. I have no symptoms at all but need to wait till next week to get the doctors approval to go back to normal. I've pretty much been doing what I want anyway.
Fall is coming so it's time to get the plow, blower and leaf removal tools out and serviced.
Hope everyone stays safe and healthy!

Very sad about Randy. I hope his family is getting by.

I wonder if others of the TBN missing have actually passed.

I tried spot mowing at the farm. A lot of the lawn is brown. I just tried to hit the places that are green and growing. Makes less dust but I'm not sure about it. The other problem is that the leaves are dropping. The bagger for the zero turn is pretty expensive. I'm thinking of resurrecting the JD 425. I have the bagger for it and I like it. We'll see.

We took the kayaks down to the Community Park in Perryville Maryland down at the mouth of the Susquehanna river. Nice place to launch kayaks into the northern part of the Chesapeake. But we agreed we like Maine better.

I wouldn't mind a little rain. (but not too much)

Chris

Chris, navigable water doesn't go very far up the Susquehanna but it's pretty from the water.
I used to take my 3 foot draft Carver there fairly often from the Bohemia River.
When I got the 5 foot draft Bertram, that made the trip a little challenging since the Bay water to get up to the River was shallow with
a zig and zag channel.
425 nice machine, worth fixing up. Bagger on my 390 is like a vacuum, doesn't leave one leaf on the lawn.
Reminds me it's getting time to put the bagger back on.

had a nice bluecheese burger made by supermarket, cooked in a pan with a couple cloves of fresh garlic chopped up.
yum

now to bake some blueberry apple strawberry muffins.

71F and clear @ 21:00, heading down to an overnight low of around 61F.

Gonna be a short post.

Was moving some rocks in the bucket with the Kubota behind the pole barn this afternoon, stopped to toss a couple more in and got a little too close (6’) to a Yellowjacket nest in the ground at the rat wall.

Got chased all the way around to the front and to the other end and they were still buzzing and stinging me. At that point we both ran towards the house.

Was nailed probably between 10 and 20 times. Woman got nailed once when one climbed up under her shirt while trying to swat them off me.

Left hand, left shoulder, left leg around the knee, right forearm and bunches around both ankles.

Nasty little buggers.

Still in a good bit of pain, going to go take a hot shower.

Will catch up later.

Sorry to hear of toppop’s passing, sincerest condolences to all his family and friends.

Hope everyone had a better day than me …

Good (Friday) arvo. Well, the weather-guessers got it wrong with their prediction/warning of a frost this morning... the Low was only 6C and it rained = 8.4mm in the gauge. It's clear and sunny with a current temp of 18.3C.

daugen: the vast majority of houses in Aus do not have a basement, but it they do it's called a basement or a cellar.

I'm off to Ross tomorrow, early, for a meeting which should get me back home by 1630.

That's about it, take care all.
