The huts have a platform to place sleeping bags and a few have fireplace. Someone rigged a forked branch to dry socks in the corner. The NPS placed a log book. The shelter is totally open on one side, and someone dragged a picnic table in, probably to get out of the rain. There is also a few tent camping places, and a spring .3 mile down the mountain for water.View attachment 736788

There are some of those kind of hut/shelters long Appalachian Trail in our area,no where as nice as your pic built out wood or logs but well kept over the years.

Good morning! 38˚F cloudy 20mph North wind the temp will just drop a bit more today to 37˚F all day and down to 27˚F Sat morning.
I have 7 potatoes plants up that I will need to cover today.
Dentist visit went well took pills an hour before. EGO battery quest also went well, I now have a fresh 2.5 Ah battery. They gave me a coupon for 30% or $50 off for one day end of March store sale, I'll have to call them and ask if EGO batteries are included. EGO batteries are NEVER on sale but there is not an exclusion on the coupon because I hate to waste 1.5 gallons of gas just to find out.

25°F and light snow this morning, going up to 36° today. Seems most of the snow missed us to the north, and just kind of brushed past us. There was a dusting on the grassy areas, but roads were just wet this morning.

Wife and I got our CCL renewals in the mail yesterday. If the State of Illinois could possibly have made this thing more ridiculously convoluted, I'm not sure how. Instead of eliminating the FOID card (Firearms Owners ID) as was suggested, they decided to combine it with the CCL. They also removed the expiration date from the card, requiring holders to log into an Illinois State Police website to check the dates. The documentation that came with it, and even some bold red print on the card itself, appears to indicate that this is NOT a permit to carry concealed, contradicting itself. (shaking my head)
State law says the ISP must process all applications and renewals within 90 days. Ours took 606 days (1 year 7 months and 28 days).

Good morning! Low was 14°, snow started about 20:30 last night and deposited at least 4" by 22:00. Light snow coming down at 06:30, and about 6" on the ground. Makes for a pretty picture though with the snow on the trees.


This past week has been an emotionally distressing week. A big blowup with the youngest son / DIL involving the whole family. The DIL stirring the pot, starting a fight over the rest of the family still maintaining contact with the son's ex-wife (who has custody of our granddaughter). The only ones that will lose out will be them. They have "cut off" all contact with the rest of the family..... so be it.....

There's a lot more to the story, but won't get into it now. Drama, drama, and more drama. When will the millenniums realize that they are not entitled and their actions will have ramifications.

Enough of my rant....

I did have fun cutting in a new driveway (it was planned already, but not until the late spring). But I am resilient and got a good gravel fix. Finished it up yesterday, just before the snow arrived. I'll get more of a gravel fix once the weather breaks and do the crusher fine top layer.

Went through a whole tank of diesel, so got a good amount of seat time!

I was able to get the R/C plane assembled and electronics all set up, but didn't get a chance to do the maiden flight. Someone had asked if it was a ducted fan.... no it is a pusher prop. The only ducted fan I have is an A-10 with twin DF's. It is difficult to take off and land, so not one of my favorites.

Still trying to get caught up here.....

Didn’t quite make as much progress yesterday as hoped, but think I have a decent shot of getting rest of trim painted today.

This afternoon will be last 3 couple dinner and Hand & Foot for awhile as our Canada friends head home next week.

Yeah, suddenly came out of the blue. The worst part was that he / DIL were trying to be sneaky and underhanded. Had the lock changed on the mailbox, cancelled trash service, blocked the "shared" driveway, etc.... Then notified us at 8pm the night before (On a Sunday no less).

BUT..... knowing everyone in a small community has its perks...after a few calls, our mail was uninterrupted, our trash was uninterrupted, and our planned driveway is installed. They haven't gotten their mail yet, they finally got a trash can AFTER the weekly pickup..... Karma bit back....

He's actually lucky that he is still on this earth..... he took his brother's full acetylene tank out of his garage and heaved it over the fence onto the stone driveway.... he's lucky he didn't blow himself up!

Vent all you need to, this stuff can get worse if you don't let it out.
Family stuff can get over the top. We can listen. And we don't need to judge, or know everything , makes us a good audience.
Hope this all calms down and they start to think it through....

The price of crushed granite has rocketed since I last bought some a couple of years ago. With 17 mile haulage and tax this 20 ton load cost 1056 pounds ($1379). Good job the stuff lasts forever, only a direct hit from one of Putin's nukes is ever going to break it and if that happens I won't be around to regret the waste of hard earned money.

Nice gravel. Wonder how much that comes to per rock?

Yes, I spent many nights in them in the Great Smoky Mountains years ago...but they had chain link fence and gates across the open side to protect people from boars and bears. It could get pretty hairy at night.. was safer than sleeping in your tent in the woods in some parts of the park...but the mice came out and ran all around.

25° right now...high in the upper 40's. Snow tonight (maybe) and tomorrow (definitely)...3-6 (or 8) predicted and it's going to be a wet snow...

Stepdaughter and her daughter here from Florida. I hope they brought clothing appropriate for the weather here.

Anther stepdaughter coming Monday...she lives in Gillette, Wyoming...she'll be used to the weather and temperatures

All told, that'll be 5 women (all related by blood) and one me...might be an interesting week. All the firearms have been unloaded and stowed...

I found a photo on the internet that I believe is of one of the shelters I slept in last century...Spence Field on the A/T at about 5,000 ft elevation...don't know who the guys are, but they look happy. I saw some newer photos of really cool looking shelters in the Smokies...didn't see any fencing, so maybe they took care of the wild boar problem.
