RS, thanks for the mealworm/calcium info. Gotta make sure we are doing it right!

Billy, that site has a wealth of bluebird-related info ... although it doesn't appear to be very well maintained (dead links, etc.)

Still a useful resource though ...

Let it shine, Ted! I had been trying to keep the A/C off as long as I could stand it, to save electricity and money. But as an experiment, I turned it on in the morning, before the house was even warm enough to trigger it. That's when I found out that the electricity from the solar panels was enough to keep up with the A/C demands, at least until about 5PM. And with the house already cool, the A/C didn't have to run much to keep it that way the rest of the day and overnight. It turns out that strategy actually reduces the daily power draw from the grid, and overall that saves money over not turning the A/C on until late in the day!:moneybag::moneybag:

We found the same thing back in the big house... set the a/c and let it do its job. Usually did not kick on until early afternoon, but worked a lot less to maintain the cool. When my son first moved in, he would wait until the house was very warm, then turn it on. He would then say it would never shut off for hours.... he is now running it "our way". He says it is much better.... stubbornly...

It's raining here now. A perfect summer rain steady but not to hard. there is no wind to speak of. We need it. The corn at the farm is looking stressed. Drew mentioned the old saying "knee high by the 4th. of July" if our corn was only knee high we would know something was very wrong. Around the fourth i guess the corn was shoulder to head high. Now it is well above my head. We had a late start this year. Sometime after the 15th of may.
I was able to take the bagger off the John Deere 425. That knocks more than a half hour off my mowing time. The lawns that get full sun are starting to go dormant.
We are eating green beans and zucchini from the garden. I wonder how long it will be till I wish my wife hadn't planter zucchini? Local peaches should be ready soon.
I love summer.

Chris

Looks like the 2.1” is it, sun and clouds now, but still have strong gusty winds.
We needed the rain for sure.

When I was growing up in Camden County, NC, we had roasting ears by July 4 as a rule. Of course we planted in early April.

Here’s a picture of my uncle’s corn around 1958. That was in what is now Chesapeake, VA across the Dismal Swamp canal.

This explains our low 80s overcast day.

Wife made a Costco run, I rode along and took my work with me.

BEF, it just passed through here, and still getting spotty showers. Had a little over 2” of rain and strong gusty winds, which we still have.

We may be related... My entire family on my father's side were from Hereford / Bertie Counties south of the Great Dismal Swamp. supposedly since the mid 1600's.
