54 going to 70 and cloudy.

Was delightful in the woods yesterday.

'Stros making a comeback?

Hope everyone is in better health today, or at least in good spirit.

I do feel better about the 'Stros chances now. They did what they had to do. Hopefully the bats don't go to sleep.

Don, saw in your raised bed pic a mattock laying on the ground. That is one of my favourite tools, yet I very rarely see anyone else using one.

Before the rain started I made a start on a new curved flower bed for my wife. She had laid a hose pipe out to mark the edge and once I cut the line vertically, the mattock was perfect for cutting out the turf.

Earlier this year we had visited a garden where the lawn edge was kept neat and easy to trim with an edging strip of mild steel and my wife asked if I could do the same. Two bits of scrap wood proved useful at getting the soil level at 4" below the grass. I welded a couple of pieces of flat bar to the ends of each 4 metre steel strip so they could be slotted together, then once my wife was happy with it, I welded them all up permanently.

I had a very old, heavy mattock (grubbing hoe). Loaned it to a neighbor, who somehow "lost" it, and he replaced it with some featherlite version. He probably thought I would be happy....the light one doesn't work very well.

Eric, around here, they place the border about 50-75mm above ground level, to help keep grass from creeping over and re-establishing itself.

Thomas- I have yet to hear/see migrating geese around here, but I am seeing increased #'s of slate backed juncos.
.......................
About mile up the road from us old beaver near the road, and wood ducks flying in out lot during the day... colors along with there style enjoying to watch.

^^^^^ I really enjoy visiting those small beaver ponds and observing the wildlife that they support.

Kyle- I am sorry to read about your "lost" mattock. Your replacement reads to be like a heavy hoe = worthless for breaking sod.

I can see the points of both sides of the 30 Meter Telescope project and protests. What I find most offensive is how some individuals exploit the issues. There is no easy decision.

Paul has not checked in recently. I hope that he is ok.

Was your old hoe like anything on this page?

I have a tiny gardening hoe that is pretty much useless for the stony soil around here. I'm thinking one of those 7" hoes at the top of that page would be just the ticket, but worry that the handle would be too short.

Kyle_in_Tex;5566677 I had a very old said:
Meanwhile the neighbor is using the much better mattock. Lol

I've seen steel strips used like that in commercial landscapes, Eric. They have to work better than the thick, 5/8" x 3 1/2" plastic edging I used around here. Every single piece of that junk warped and worked its way out of the ground, and in the fire, the top edges melted bending it even more. I'd planted a couple hundred feet of the wretched stuff, and dug and pulled it all back up, forming a pile of it on the gravel pad where the shipping container is going. Last week, I spent a delightful afternoon, first removing the screws that held the wooden stakes onto the sides of the stuff, then using a saber saw to cut it into garbage can sized lengths for disposal. In many places, the melted plastic had covered up the screw heads, so I made do by breaking the pointed ends of the screws off with a pair of vise grips. Glad that job's done, but what a massive waste of time and money installing it in the first place.

I got a pile of it behind my shed lol

BEF- Nice picture. :) A much better day down your way than up here in NE. It rained all day here until about an hour ago, I'll probably see off/on rain shower activity until tomorrow.

RNG I was just going to start replacing parts in the refrigerator when I got the November Sales add from Costco. This counter depth refrigerator will be $1000 off.
https://www.costco.com/Samsung-22Cu...ith-Filtered-Ice-Maker.product.100477773.html

Back when I was shopping, Don, Samsung had some of the poorest customer service ratings. And when you try to comparison shop using the Costco part number for the appliance, you lean that Costco has their own special numbers, and special feature sets, so Amazon ratings may not be apples-to-apples (or Samsungs-to-Samsungs, as the case may be).

Looks like a nice fridge, though, and it comes in black to match the rest of my motly crew...

Costco doubles the warranty to 2 years and citibank doubles that to 4 years, or for $129 I can add 3 years to costco's 2 for 5 years under warranty. The problem I have is they say $1000 off, but off what. I'm thinking off retail price and that will still be $100 lower than home depot and with free haul away I'm even more ahead. I'll find out Oc. 30 when it goes on sale.

The Costco reviews are mostly good but I also remember that blender I reviewed that was smoking and they refused to post my review.

We have always called it a Grub-n-hoe. I use it a lot here for digging up rock and cutting roots.

Don how much will you garden produce in the Fall?
This is my first fall garden in this area. I still have 12 eggplants on 2 plants and planted carrots, kale, cabbage, cilantro, turnips, & broccoli. We have already had 2 meals of kale.

Don, looks like lot of seat time to fill those raised beds.
Yes it does, those seat time volunteer jobs always sucker me in.

37˚ F in the valley 44˚F on the hills but warmed up to 80˚F.

Took a rest day after the garden block placement and played hand and foot with the club.

Rick we have a Wildlife Club that deals with the wild pigs. I have seen their cages and have not seen any pig damage. The back-up club is always the hunting club if they start to mess with the golf courses.

Our hiking trail routes were approved by the developer so now they go into construction mode.

No. Mine was probably more like 8-10 lbs, forged. It was my ex-wife's grandfathers. It wasn't something you would want to swing overhead much, but more like for Eric's trenches.

It was more like this, only wooden handled.

Acorns are so thick this year I needed to break out the power broom yesterday. Cold and raining today so taking it easy. Did load up a trailer with firewood this morning with the Kubota.
Hope everyone is healthy and safe.

That looks like what I've been taught to call a mattock, and the one here gets used whenever there's a small job and I'm too lazy to hook up the backhoe.

Episodes like you related with your hoe are why I don't loan tools.

Your skills at warranty extension are impressive, Don. I'd expect a refrigerator to last far longer than 5 years, though, so check the Samsung reviews for yourself to see if you'd be happy with the runaround more than a few folks have gotten when the darn things went on the blink.

I've always wondered how good the power broom works. Shindaiwa makes some good stuff. Pricey but good.
