62°F and rain this morning, clearing and going up to 67° today. Actually warmed up over night. The thunder storms woke us around 4am, and the dogs made sure we stayed awake until the alarm clocks went off at 5am.
Spent Saturday morning working on outside stuff. Wife decided to power wash the driveway pad, while I was sorting and moving old railroad ties behind the barn. She got to play with the new power washer (which we actually bought about six months ago for the deck), and I got some tractor seat time. Everybody wins. The LS had no problem lifting a RR tie with nothing on the back. Two at a time, though, was not going to happen. First time I've lifted the rear wheels, and already sure I don't want to make it a habit.
We stopped early to get cleaned up for a visit with friends. Drove to a favorite Mexican restaurant in Granite City and met everyone at 3pm for an early dinner, as some of the guys had gigs to play that night. My "best" friend even talked me into trying a shot of some new tequila they'd recently discovered; Cincoro reposado, which is apparently partly owned by Michael Jordan. Very smooth stuff. The food was great, and the company was even better. We had an after party at the home of the old singer from the Sammy Hagar tribute band. The couple who'd hired us to play a show in SanFran back in 2014 were in town, which was the whole point of the get-together. We sat around a fire pit for far too long sharing entertaining stories. Mark, the husband of the visiting couple, asked if I'd be willing to come out of retirement to go back to SanFran to play another show. Tempting.
Sunday was a more relaxed day. I had some grand plans for the day, none of which happened. I instead decided to babysit the large burn pile out in the pasture. Some of that stuff has been in there for several years, like the carpeting we pulled out of the house when we remodeled, and a bunch of old fence posts. Way past due to burn. I had a surprisingly difficult time getting it to really get going, even with the propane torch. Then, I remembered someone here talking some time ago about using a leaf blower to get some much-needed oxygen into the pile. So, I walked back and got the backpack blower out and ... well, that definitely did the trick.
Here's a pic of the feeble fire before the blower showed up.
Had to make a run to Tractor Supply for chicken feed Sunday afternoon, then spent the rest of the evening working on my guitar. Got everything soldered together, strung it up and it played! There is an issue with the tone pot not working right, which I traced to a boneheaded wiring mistake. Ran out of time last night, so I'll fix it tonight. After that, it just needs some setup time to get it to play like butter.
When stringing it up, I noticed the tuners were getting a little harder to turn, and found that several of the little nylon spacers between the knobs and the bridge body had torn and were in the process of destroying themselves. So, as I already kind of suspected, I'm going to have to replace the bridge/tremolo assembly. I've already replaced the head piece at the top of the neck with a better design, but I wanted to at least give the stock bridge a chance.
I'm jokingly going to miss having that "Overlord of Music" stamp on it, a moniker that generates a great deal entertaining conversation in the kit guitar builders circles.
Nice truck, Buppies. Congrats. That dash board looks like the glass panel nav/comm systems they put in aircraft these days.
