Spent the morning mowing in the trees east of the house. Another steep section that slopes in two directions. Mowed up hill, then backed down for the next pass. It eventually got to the point that the tractor tires just spun because of the steep slope and it was time to quit. No desire to try to mow downhill; it would be like Sonny Bono's last ski run.
I have given some thought to cutting a fire line with the box blade though. One north-south along the main property line, another east-west at the bottom of the property before it gets too steep to traverse. Then another short section north of the house to complete the loop. Had such a line been in place before last year's fire, it probably would have stopped the spread into my property.
Not done mowing just yet, but will probably give it a rest today due to low humidity and brisk winds. I could use a break from all the twisting and bumping anyway.
Purchased a used transmission for the old BMW motorcycles and it arrived yesterday, so I might pop the cover off and see how bad it is inside. The seller said that the input shaft would turn a few revolutions and then stop, so it could be anything from a disintegrating bearing cage to broken gears.
Screened a Nova episode last night called Mega Fire that attempted to delve into the science behind last year's Camp Fire. Not much new was revealed, just the mismanagement that allowed exceptional levels of fuel to build up on the forest floor, the high prevailing winds that day, and the high tension lead that failed on the PG&E transmission tower that set the whole thing off. Meanwhile, investigations into the Code Red emergency notification system are coming out that admit most people in Paradise failed to receive warnings because the system was over loaded. I did get a warning, but it was hours late and I'd already evacuated based in information from CalFire and the local sheriff's department they had posted on Facebook and Twitter. Odd that the Nova episode made no mention at all of that. Here's a link to the video:
