Good Morning!!!! 61F @ 8:45AM. Sunny. High 79F. Winds light and variable.

Funny you should mention robots, Wng. I had an odd dream where I was in a factor full of machining robots, and almost got hit by one of them. Then I watched a man loading parts on one that remained in motion as he worked, and he had to time his movements to avoid getting clobbered. Don't know where that dream came from, but last week a worker near here was killed when a bin dumping machine came down on him, and a whistle blower at the factory came forward stating it was a long standing problem. That said, I don't think I'd let a robot with a pair of scissors get anywhere near my head. It's bald enough as it is, and I kinda like my brains on the inside.

Got the encoder aligned within 0.001" yesterday. Part of my problem was an Allen wrench that wouldn't slip into the holes in two screws that were under the bracket, so that the wrench had to move up into the holes. The screw heads weren't easy to see, either. Ended up using the belt sander to chamfer the corners of the Allen wrench just a tiny bit, but that was enough to be able to adjust those screws.

Then used the lathe to make an aluminum plug for the transmission on the old motorcycle. The hole was for the speedo cable, but the bike has an aftermarket electric speedometer on it. The hole is on the top, so I came up with the idea of using an o-ring to keep water out. I had an o-ring assortment from Harbor Freight on the shelf, but learned that the o-rings aren't very strong as they kept breaking as I tried to stretch them into position. Good example of getting what you pay for. I'll order a new assortment from McMaster-Carr on Monday.

There's a little dinner plate sized fairing around the headlight on the bike, and the previous owner had left two or three cables way over length, coiling the extra with zip ties. That made it very hard to install the fairing, so yesterday I cut out some wire and rearranged things until it all would fit. Also had to clean up some threads with a tap, but it finally all went back together. That's when I found that the battery had drained down to 5 volts, so there would be no test start that day. Two "smart" chargers thought they were hooked to 6 volt batteries, so I got out an old, dumb, 12 volt charger and left it on until the battery came up to about 11 volts. Then hooked up the Battery Saver, and will see today how well it did. Today I'll start looking for a parasitic load that caused the battery drain.

At the end of the day I gathered up the parts to reassemble the seat, and learned I'd been sold the wrong size rubber bumpers for the bottom of the pan. I also don't have the metal strips that go under the pop rivets that hold the cover in place, so I'll have to come up with some appropriately sized washers or spend some time with the sheet metal shears making some. Good thing I don't have anything else to do...:confused2:

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend!

On the critter front, as I was making my earlier post I could hear a coyote yelping somewhere down in the canyon. It's the first one I've heard up here, but I'm not surprised. But I've got enough problems with the foxes, and don't need their bigger cousins nosing around.

Also just learned that this morning someone was life flighted to the Chico hospital after hitting a deer on the huge bridge that crosses the West Branch of the Feather River, just a few miles from here. It's not uncommon to see deer carcassas along Highway 70, but the deck of that bridge is four lanes wide and the sight lines are very long, and I wonder how someone wouldn't have time to slow down enough to avoid the collision. Don't know where the deer would go, as it's also a very high bridge, with maybe 70 or 80 feet of drop to the water and rocks below.

Finally, one hummingbird has figured out how to hog the nectar in both front side feeders, and for the past several weeks I've been refilling the ones on the back side every other day or so because of the heavier traffic. I move the mostly full ones from the front to the back, and reward the pig with fresh nectar each time so the nectar won't be wasted to spoilage. Somehow that just doesn't seem fair...

While my critter problems are not as great as RNG's. A large flock of black birds moved in yesterday and drove all other birds away and proceeded to empty my 4 gallon feeder. Do not usually see black birds at our feeders. Hope they are migrating south.

BEF, I read your Life on the Farm thread earlier this morning...never noticed the link before. Fascinating family history and pix. Thanks for documenting and sharing it. Much to be proud of.

Thanks, should add another chapter. Was thinking of making a book out of it for the family. So much family info gets lost over time. I've been documenting as much geneology as i can find. Been researching some of the history of the old railroad. In particular is the location of this picture. 44057252_10156394946426519_1091855659592318976_o.jpeg

Just got into Roanoke after two major slow downs due to wrecks on 81.
Just came up I81 from Harrisonburg, no backups on that section tonight. Have a fun trip. We enjoyed visiting Loretta Lynn's ranch down past Nashville.

Thanks, we are going to try. Ellen isn’t feeling well, she got a headache like a migraine, she’s in bed sleeping since 7:30, didn’t eat dinner. So we will have to see how it goes.

Happy birthday BEF!

Buppies, hope your Mrs feels better.

Buppies, hope your Mrs feels better.

Wow, what a beautiful day we had. Had a guest preacher at church. Enjoyed him.

Hope Ellen gets rid of her headache.

Happy birthday BEF! Hope it's a good one.

Ron, I like when the birds come after I mow and "pick the fields". It doesn't happen often, maybe a few times a year, whether I mow or not.

Got to drive the new gator a bit more. Seems nice still. :)

Been fighting fire ants, using permethrin. Have sprayed and killed many, many, mounds. It seems like playing "whack a mole". They are horrible after all these rains.

Got a new security light installed. Old one's sensor gave out. Had to hybrid 2 that I've bought in the past. Didn't want the power hungry halogen bulbs on the nicer unit, so I put the new sockets and LED bulbs (each on it's own stalk) on the base. Turns out the new one I bought has a base that didn't fit my existing plate. Needed the base with one center screw vs 4 outer bolt circle screws.

Got my 13 year old daughter to vacuum out my car's interior.

My 11 yr old middle daughter finally got over her intimidation of a bigger bicycle we have, and I bet she rode it for 1.5 hours straight, once she decided she could ride it. Another big step of growing up.

Kids begged me to BBQ some pork chops. They didn't thaw out until 7 pm, so I was cooking until 8:30. It was very calm outside, the pit's smoke going straight up. 61F feels like 61F. Rain on the way.

Talked to my neighbor (who's about to move somewhere up north). He's had a bad heat stroke and he says it has really changed his ability and life. So he wants to move somewhere colder, where the HVAC industry is focused on heat vs A/C. He's looking at prices, taxes, and livability. Says he wants to live rurally 5 or 10 minutes outside of a town around 10-20K in size. I told him good luck.

Talked to my wife's uncle, who needs his 4 wheeler's tie rod replaced. I told him thanks, but I don't have the time or the special tool needed.

Pork chops were good. Kids had a feast.

Have a blessed week all of you!

Good evening all. 50F this morning, partly cloudy, heavy dew, calm wind. Sky cleared off till late afternoon, wind stayed light, and high temp of 68F. Choir sang at chapel this morning, made wife oatmeal for breakfast and helped cook chicken and rice for dinner. Other than that did not do much today.
Randy hope your trip gets better.
Happy birthday Buckeye's mom.
RNG, that was a nightmare, not a dream:2cents: Good job on the scales:cool2:
Prayers for all.

28 right now...high in the mid-40's and clear today.
Sent Curtis Cab an e-mail yesterday about some missing hardware for the wiper kit...hopefully, I'll get feedback today...

I feel pretty crappy today...cold coming on...

Happy birthday BEF !

Muck spreading for me today. Unusually, we are doing it in dry weather with nice firm ground so shouldn't make a rutted mess for once.

All the children seemed to have a great time at the birthday party. The highlight for many was when a neighbour called round to say we had a sheep with it's head stuck in the fence and they all trooped up the lane to watch it get eased out. Two hours later the neighbour saw it was well and truly stuck again in almost identical place ! Never had that before.

As the party finished and the first cars departed, one called back to say as they went up the drive, they passed a sheep stuck in the fence :confused3: Yep, same stupid lamb :mur:. Not as though it was short on food either, with only 3 sheep in a 6 acre field. Waiting now to see if it can find a different way to die after moving fields...

good morning all.
Going to be frost on the pumpkin this morning.
Glad I picked the last of the peppers yesterday.

Buckeye, happy birthday!
Toppop, hope Lynn feels better today and you have a wonderful time.

woke up too early from fire alarm beeping away at me in middle of night, just the low battery beep which is maddening.
first it told me the smoke detector in the upstairs bedroom was bad, then it complained about the one in the dining room.
Change in weather and temps I think set them off. So I'll be on a little ladder today replacing a bunch of them. At least they use
lithium batteries, which seem to be lasting three to four years.

Roy hope you feel better. I'm still trying to get over mine.
