We had heavy rain to our south yesterday, we got a little.

Good Morning!!!! 68F @ 6:00AM. Sunny. High 91F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph.
Saw blue sky for the first time in weeks yesterday, and only a little haze in the air. That was looking to the south. When I looked to the west, though, there was a huge bank of what looked like cloud, but was actually smoke from the Ranch fire, almost 100 miles to the south. When I checked the satellite photo loops, sure enough, there was the daily flare up of smoke and huge stream heading east then north as it encountered the prevailing southerly winds in the Sacramento Valley. The skies stayed clear overnight and I was out before sunup this morning to take a peek at the Perseids. I was rewarded by about ten in the twenty minutes I watched, but gave up as the eastern sky was getting too light to see. A curious bat kept me company, making several passes over me. It was either very large or very close, as it looked to have a three foot wingspan from where I was laying. I don't think they come that big in these parts, and am thankful it didn't come any closer.:laughing:
Lots of accessories available out there for lathes, Ed. Tool post grinders, taper adapters for the tail stock so you can use drill bits and chucks with different tapers to them, a collet holder for the headstock (with a selection of collets!), wrenches for the top of the tool post and the fasteners on the compound rest, dial indicators and holders and precision machinist's level for setting up the lathe, micrometers and dial calipers for measuring your work, magnifiers for seeing it (I like Optivisors), tap and die holders for threading, oil cans for spindle, way, and cutting oils, live and dead centers, drive dogs to go with that faceplate you're missing, reamers, drill bits (fractional, number, and letter), good lord, the list goes on and on. If your new friend with the lathe has some tool that has anything to do with cutting or measuring metal, and you don't already have one, see if he'll sell it to you at a reasonable price! To get an idea of what things might cost, check the MSC Industrial website.
Spent more time on the saddle bag mounts yesterday, and settled on some 1"x1" square tubing for the spacers between the rear rack and the bag mounts. The mounts are 5/16" thick steel, and I thought they'd be stiff enough, but when I put one end in the bench vice it could be flexed a good half inch. When I clamped a piece of that tubing to it, I couldn't move it at all.
So I spent most of the day laying out holes, drilling them with a 3/4" end mill, and then welding 3/4" diameter bushings into the holes so that the tube wouldn't be crushed. More of the same is on the agenda for today.
The hummers are outside squawking at the empty feeder, so I better get up and fix us both some breakfast...:laughing:

33 pounds of food delivered to food pantry, air is so thick and grey out you'd think it was raining, but just foggy mist.
Big storm system staying offshore but throwing huge amounts of moisture inland, like pea soup out.
Eric can tell us all about pea soup.
Stopped at Kubota dealer and picked up set of blades for F mower, very reasonable at 54 bucks a set for 72 inches, and genuine Kubota too, whatever that means. Not like
they manufacture their own mower blades...but they set the spec and the blades were pretty heavy.
Now to figure out which pins to pull to flip the mower deck vertical, then you put some helper handle in and lift.
Dealer had promised as part of delivery to come out one time to go over this with me. I asked a month ago and they said they had no one who could go on
the road. Huh? Apparently they have lost their better service techs since while they pay a competitive wage, they don't provide any health insurance at all and almost no benefits.
Owner is old and stuck in the past, cries poormouth but if he doesn't match the local JD dealer in compensation package, he will never keep his employees. Parts mgr was pretty upset about it, said years of telling owner this did nothing and business is having great problems because of it.
Pretty sad when a tractor and lawn mower dealership has no one they can send on the road to change some mower blades...
So I will do it myself, it's no big issue, just a promise not kept.

We've gone from desert to swamp this week, and more rain forecast for this afternoon. And school starts today in most of the school districts around here. Hope everyone (especially me) remembers to watch for, and slow down for, school zones. And of course watch for the kids outside school zones as well.

It was 49° this morning, yesterday was in the low 90's and partly cloudy in the afternoon. It looks like today is going to be about the same. High 80's and a 20% chance of showers in the afternoon.
Did get a few little things done yesterday. It looks like I've gotten all the major projects on the list done for the summer.
Some of the aspens and willows are starting to change, it's a about a month early. I'm thinking it's because we haven't had much rain this season. I think we have had less than two inches of rain this summer.
Eric... I see you have better imagination then I do.

63°F and light fog this morning, going up to 91° today. Chances for rain and storms starting tomorrow for the next 10 days, at least according to the iThingie weather app ... for whatever that's worth.
Got a phone call Saturday from a guitar player friend letting me know that the drummer we played with in the Sammy Hagar tribute band was to have his right leg amputated later that day. He'd been in the hospital since Wednesday with a staph infection, and found out Saturday they would need to remove part of one leg. He'd been having some trouble with both of his legs for several years, and his being considerably overweight and battling diabetes didn't help. He posted on Facebook yesterday that the surgery went well, and that he's ready to start the battle back to walking again. It was removed just below the knee. As sad as the situation is, he's always been a very motivated person. I'm sure he'll battle back, and probably even find a way to play again. Even at 61 years old, I don't think he's ready to be done just yet.
Spent the morning yesterday outside with The Wife. She was mowing on the zeroturn, and I was taking a long walk with the line trimmer. With all of our mowers going down at the same time last weekend, the grass got pretty tall, and took some time to shorten. I spent most of my time around the lake, which I had been neglecting for the last few weeks anyway. By just after noon, we were both a tired and sweaty mess, and called it a day.
Got the smaller of the two burn piles burnt yesterday. The big one in the pasture will have to wait until next weekend, if it's not raining.
Her oldest son was in town from Texas, and came by for dinner. We ordered Thai carryout from one of our favorite places in O'Fallon IL. She had also picked up a cake earlier in the morning from a bakery in New Baden, as Tuesday is his 26th birthday. After dinner, cake, and some entertaining conversation, we all retired to the basement to watch some movies he'd brought. I made it through the first one - Rogue One, A Star Wars Story - before it was time for me to retire to bed. That 05:00 alarm comes early. They stayed up and watch another of the newer Star Wars movies.

Had a 3 day weekend, took Friday off from work (after several hours of meetings in the morning).. We had not finished loading up travel trailer and truck so it took a couple hours to get loaded and hitched up, then had showers and headed out, turns out it was the hottest day so far this year (over 100F). The campground we were headed to is about 80 miles away. We took our time and about 25 miles before we got to the campground, we heard a loud noise, not sure what we heard, all looked fine in mirrors, kayaks still strapped down, pulled off first chance we got, did walk around, nothing seemed out of place, tires all running cool, nothing loose or missing. We continued on to campground and setup. I am in the habit of checking wheel chocks and stabilizers after a few hours. We had a flat tire (hard to notice since the stabilizers were holding the weight. A chunk about 6" long was sticking out. Took about 15 minutes to change it, including tools and putting the flat tire back under the trailer where the spare was.
Seems everyone is keeping busy, stay safe.
I don't like towing trailer without a spare, but weather cooled and the trip home on Sunday was around 75F. The smoke was bad enough that we were not able to spend much time outside, but had a quiet time with just wife and I (and dog).

It is hot out there this afternoon. Just finished mowing and the grass is still wet from the fog this morning. Made a mess but it is shorter. Have almost everything loaded up for the lathe trip in the morning. Called Clausing and the thing weights 1120 lb so it might be a slow trip home, depending....
