good morning all. AccuWrong says 37 inches of rain so far this year, but I bet it's closer to 40.
And more today, more tomorrow. And I was liking the lawn slowing down...not for long.
It was dry enough here we got over an inch of rain and nothing showed up in ditches, dry as a bone, ground sucked it up
right away.
Hispanic/Mexican helper comes today at noon for first day. Going to practice my charades moves...
I think he got it when I explained the translator on his phone saying I wanted to chop down the tree when I really wanted it weeded.
So one of the job requirements was "never guess, always confirm". He seems pretty bright and has done lots of weedeating. Apparently he has been taking care of hogs for three years, giving them shots, doing whatever you do on a pig farm and working long hours for min wage. With me, he now has four days a week committed, three different properties to work at. These guys work 6 days, 7 days a week without batting an eye. I'm paying him a very good living wage (for this area) of 15 per hour. Apparently that's a nice bump up from the pig farm. He showed up in an almost new GMC Colorado p/u, had insurance for it, and seemed legit. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Today lesson number one is don't turn things that are green into brown. Yesterday we got down on our hands and knees and eyeballed existing plant damage from weedeaters. He seems to get it, and has zero problems bending over, like I do, to pull some weeds. Must be a far improvement from dealing in hog poop. And yes, I did order another dozen of those plastic protectors., which I really don't like, but making this place overly labor intensive isn't smart. Which I say keeping in mind I have planted over 200 trees here to trim around...
Am hoping that little black snake is doing ok this morning. Pains me to see a nice animal hurt. Do snakes have memory? Are they smart enough to not try climbing my plastic fence again? Next year all the plastic is getting replaced. I used stuff I had in an old garden in PA and ran out, finished with light weight fencing, which caused this problem. If the snake wants in, fine. Still wondering what it wanted to eat in there...assuming it didn't want to mate with my red garden hose...
