There's talk that this fire was started by the train throwing out an ember....no confirmation though. They shut down the train now until at least August. Loss of a tremendous tourist revenue for the area.
Wow, that sucks. Will hurt them and silverton.

Good Morning!!!! (Just barely) 82F @ 11:45AM. Sunny. High 88F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph.

Been reading since 5AM, on and off, just now hit the bottom of the pile. You folks have been mighty busy!

Good trip down south, with perfect weather, beautiful twisty roads, mostly good food, and plenty of great company. Wore me out, though. Got home at about 5PM yesterday, put out the garbage, ate a light dinner, and went to bed at 8:30. Slept like a log 'till 5AM, then a little more. Might even take a nap this afternoon...

On the way south I stopped at a little general store/cafe in the tiny town of Raymond, miles from nowhere and the social center of that part of the state. I'm not much of a burger guy, but the bacon cheeseburger and fries I had were absolutely delicious. Friendly folks, too. I wasn't very hungry when I woke up yesterday morning, so after a few cheese crackers, hit the road for a few hours. It was just after sunup and I got to see deer out grazing and a couple of turkeys right up close. All in that wonderful golden light of morning. The only restaurants that seemed to be open later on were Mexican, which I normally don't have a problem with breakfast burritos, the previous two nights dinners were all Mexican themed and I was looking for something a little more traditional. I was more or less doubling back on Thursday's route, and found myself back in Raymond at about 10AM, time for Brunch! And I tell you what, the chicken fried steak (hide your eyes, Don) that gal plunked down in front of me was a real slice of heaven. Tender enough to cut with a fork, crunchy on the outside, and swimming in the lightest gravy with just a hint of sweetness to it, oh man, I had to stop just now and wipe my chin! Tasty home fries, too, and a couple over easy eggs and sourdough toast, that breakfast lasted the rest of the day and I still wasn't really hungry when I got home. Can't get that at Denny's!

Today I need a vacation from the mini-vacation, and I doubt I'll get much more done than some unpacking and laundry.

Hope everyone's week got off to a great start!

Sounds awesome, RNG. When I used to travel playing music, we would always stop in the small towns for meals. Not only is the food just better at those little places, they generally give you way too much of it for what they charge. I remember one place in mid-Missouri back in the '80s that used to serve a $4 breakfast platter I simply couldn't ever finish. Everything was ridiculously delicious, and there was just way too much of it.

RNG, good trip report. Now I need to go find a restaurant that serves a good chicken fried steak.

I've always liked a good chicken fried steak with some good gravy. Several years ago, we went into a Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews in Flower Mound, TX; a place we'd never been before and I ordered the chicken fried steak. The gravy had a very slight pink tint that was different, but that was without doubt the best chicken fried steak I've ever had. Later, I looked on the Internet and they didn't show the chicken fried steak on their menu. Sure enough, we went into the place again and no chicken fried steak, and I haven't been back since.

69 this morning. Currently 90. Heat index 93. Sure feels hotter.

Day trip went ok yesterday but wife said we wouldn’t go again without an overnight stay. Just too much driving for the kids.

Setting up chicken coops today. Ok all week. Birds come Friday. Had a guy lined up to spread windrows out inside barns yesterday. He had some problems with his operation and didn’t make it. Put me a half a day behind as I got to do that this morning with guys standing around waiting on me. Not good. I did come up with piddling jobs for them so not standing. Was trying to avoid a day out sweeting in that much dust just being a week post-op.

Don. Sounds like your move went nice. You’d talked of down sizing but didn’t realize that you were trying to sell. After a visit to Newport yesterday and my sisters last week. I can see the appeal of city or community living. But I still wouldn’t want to live there atleast not yet. Best of luck to you and wipper. Golf balls are safer catches than copperheads.

LS. Glad you’re improving and back to work. Maybe fires will turn. What’s the rules out there if say you were to disk a fire break around buildings before evacuating. Here fire departments like the help when you show up with a disk or dozer. Especially if your place is next. Forestry dozer is only available during normal business hours. No overtime or weekends. Everything else falls on volunteer fire departments. Not a paid department in the county.

Others get well.

Drew. Weeds are taking over my garden now that I’m down. And your harvesting and not all my planting’s are up yet.

Farmer, watch yourself. Don’t push yourself too much. I was wiped out today, just doing chores around the house and shop. I put new blades on my zero turn, Oregon mulching blades. Really works well. The blades are much thicker than the older ones.

LS, it sounds like you gave your knee the strongman competition test. Glad to hear it's better. Hope the fires can be contained and put out.

Farmer, hope your doing better. Tell your boss to give you a moment for a cool drink every now and then.

RNG, glad you found that 'diamond in the rough" restaurant.

Don,skip the next part.

Bird, I was going to write a book back when I was younger. I was going to title it "The best chicken fried steak in Texas". The research nearly killed me. ;) Now, I might get CFS once a year. I usually now order chicken fried chicken. I like gravy so much, you could put it on broccoli and I might would eat it.

One of the best, and it may be because I've been eating them for decades, is found at Hungry Jacks Thirsty, Inc in Victoria Texas. They use a tenderized cutlet, with yellow creamy gravy. I'm sure it is very hard on your arteries but it's good on your taste buds...

My wifey just slaved over a hot stove this afternoon making home made Onion soup. She used our home grown organic white onions grown right here. She bought the Gruyere cheese too. I'm about to request my 2nd bowl. Said she cried quite a bit cutting up 10 cups of onions. ;)

CWB, hope your wifey heals fast.

Prayers for all my peeps.

I looked up Raymond CA, and thought, going there once must be a mistake, but going twice....

Farmer, the news tonight reported the reason that they currently haven't lost any structures was due to homeowners "prepping" their property with fire breaks and thinning of forest fuels. Yes, if you have equipment, you can make breaks. They won't allow to actively participate in 'fighting' the fire or be near the lines. Make sure you take it easy...you don't want or need any setbacks!

Kyle, the knee is holding up well to 'work stresses'--- the mulch, the fence, etc... Crazy thing is, today went to WallyWorld for a few items. By the time we walked around the store, knee was screaming. Go figure...hey, maybe I can use it as an excuse not to go shopping!:D

RNG, we used to have a restaurant called "Murphy's Mule Barn" that was known for their chicken fried steak. Was a family owned restaurant for 3 generations, since the 40's. It was actually in an old service station from the times, including the old signage. Went there about 2 years ago... I have never seen a CFS so big! It was folded over on a turkey platter and still hung over the edges! Could cut it with your fork too. Full meal was $8.50. Bought enough home for 2 more meals. Was passing by about 6 months ago and the place closed up....what a shame!

BEF, yeah, Silverton is in a world of hurt. Only access they have is from the north (Grand Junction), or from the east (Denver). Tourists aren't going to make those drives unless they are going out to 4-wheel. Plenty of other areas to do that though. Hope the mom and pop shops can survive.

43 right now...high about 80.
Wife and Stepdaughter leaving for their trip to CA tonight...I'll be watching Bella the Boxer dog for the next week. She's actually pretty good when alone, but a week alone (during the day) isn't going to make her happy...

Good morning all. I must have spent a lot of time in the tractor seat yesterday as I had to stop before tea time and fill up again with diesel. Moles had been very active in one of the fields that is only used for occasional grazing and I kept getting bumped and jolted where the dried out mole hills were hidden below dense clumps of Canada thistle. A few years ago it would all have been part of the fun, although now my back and neck keep telling me to slow down. I quite like moles, as long as they aren't in the hay meadow, but may have to resort to trapping a few - or buy that air seat.

I'm driving over to Derby later this morning to go collect my sister and her husband. They will be staying with us for the rest of the week, just a pity the weather is going downhill.

Ed, I was given one of those pull along brick joint rakes a long while ago and the pin kept working loose. If you rate them I will get another to try, they cost very little and at least I now have a welding machine to improvise a tougher pin holder if need be.

Bella, hope Roy finds you an interesting radio station to help the day pass quicker.

Good morning all, 58 and patchy fog going to 70 with a 30% chance of showers. Need to make a dump run soon, might get that done today, will see. Glad for the cooler weather. Lot of things need doing...... Will see.

LS, Take it easy on the knee, they say the new ones are not as good as the old ones.

Farmer, wish some of us lived near by so we could help.

Eric, no idea what are the better ones but I hope you find a good one. The one I have the nail in held by the handle being tightened up against it. They worked loose some but not bad.

Prayer for all in need, have a great day. Ed

Farmer, I really hate this for you, but prayers for fast recovery.

A little cool at 52, but headed to 75 later and at least it’s not raining again.
Farmers here have list about 25-30% of corn.

Prayers for the tractor clan.
Have a good day.
