I just can't bring myself to wait that long on oil change, especially on a brand new engine...so 5,000 was the time for me. The dealer gets to change it at 10K.

The main reason for the 600 mile oil change was to remove the metal debris that accumulated from parts seating/wearing against each other. As CNC machining has come to dominate engine manufacturing, surface finishes have improved to the point that break in wear is minimized. CNC doesn't do anything to keep an errant chip out of the oil system, though, and a few dollars worth of oil and a filter is cheap insurance. The used CPO BMW 5 series car I purchased didn't get its first oil change until 15,000 miles. That wasn't disclosed until after the purchase, and apparently that's AOK with BMW. But it was another among many reasons that I decided it wasn't the forever car I was hoping it would be.

Whether the oil plug has a one time use compressible metal washer is the real concern for me. Sure don't want the dealer coming back and saying that since I didn't put a new washer on, the new engine is on me. :shocked:

Shesh, spend the extra fifty cents for a new crush washer when you're buying the oil and filter, Drew.:laughing: Seems like all of my vehicles use them, and I keep them in one of those organizers with the little drawers, and even put the part number and dimensions on the drawer front so I don't have to open every drawer lookin' for the right one. The rest of the drawers hold o-rings, fuses, automotive bulbs/LEDs, stoppers, stainless steel fasteners, and other small bits that would get lost by themselves in a drawer somewhere...

That's hilarious, Rick. These guys, just like the "State of Jefferson" folks, haven't figured out yet that the urban areas generate most of the tax money that builds their roads and pays for most of their county government activities. And that most of the voters live in the urban areas, and they won't go for a divided state, either.

Saw that this morning, too. Had me chuckling, and thinking about how us "downstate" Illinoisans always joke about the idea of pushing Chicago and Cook County out into Lake Michigan to become their own state. Never going to happen, but always entertaining to read about it.

For sure. Always the sort of thing you order two of.
But not all drain bolts take washers. Considering the catastrophic damage that ensues after whatever was in there leaks out
when the bolt backs out, would seem like a fine investment. So now I know to ask when I buy the oil filter assuming it's at the dealer.
Would not expect auto parts store guy to know from my experience at chain stores.

Good Morning!!!! 52F @ 9:45AM. Mostly cloudy skies early, then partly cloudy this afternoon. High 58F. Winds light and variable.

From what I've read about the Battle of the Bulge, the weather was very cruel to all that were present. And for the American forces surrounded and cut off from supplies, it must have been **** on earth. I can't feel anything but the utmost respect that served their country in that place, and am grateful for their sacrifice.

Good to hear you were able to get out for a walk with the wife, Rip. Small steps, but it's progress none the same.

Went shopping for an orthopedic surgeon yesterday, and was surprised I had many more choices than my internist had indicated. I have a note with their names in to him now, asking for a recommendation. How else is a person supposed to pick one? In the end, it might come down to their hospital affiliation. There are two in the area that I won't consider at all. Just got a call back from the internist, and he says most of the doctors on the list are "hospitalists", and don't see outpatients. Not quit clear on what that means, so I'll call the ones he recommended and see what they say.

Got a quote back for chrome plating on some of the rustier parts on the old motorcycle. Just replacing one of the parts would cover the cost of plating all of them, so I'll get them sent off tomorrow when I'm in town for groceries.

Today I'll start installing the new 12V alternator and solid state ignition on the old bike, then figure out how much of the old wiring harness I can still use. Not even sure all of it's there.

I bought a pack of 10 crush washers for my honda transmission plug. now i need to actually use one.....

Got the treadmill onto a pallet, and used tractor to get it to the basement. Had to put on side to get thru door, and pulled onto a cart to move to other side of basement. should have waited for wife to help, that thing is heavy.

Now to assemble.

since tractor was out, brought another dozen bags wood pellets to porch box, 4 on top outside.

My dad was not at the battle of the bulge, he was at Omaha Beach though, made multiple landings under fire, to pre position ammo and supplies and ferry the wounded. The dead had to be left for later. Dad died when I was 12 and it was several years later that I gained some measure of understanding what they had to deal with. Purely and simply, they saved our world!

Daugen- Thanks for sharing your Supeer A rebuild pictures. I await pictures of the project and the completed project. I wish you well. When we have our town fair there is a tractor show all ages, all types, many are classics and they all drive by our house. One of these years I just might join them. The other morning I heard a mourning dove bounce off one of our windows. It hit hard. When I looked out the window and onto our deck there was a red shoulder hawk mantling and plucking the obviously dead dove. The hawk got a good meal. I do not know if the window collision or the hawk killed the dove. We have a decent hawk and owl population around here. I consider all the bird food I am going through as "chum".

Buckeyefarmer- Thanks for sharing your cat picture. We are currently dogless..... not good.... Spring is coming and hopefully new pets. You do not need to assemble that treadmill. All you need to do is move that box around.

6" of snow is the "official" amount. Snow management with the tractor is done.

Warm today.....55F right now. Light rain expected this afternoon......just got back from a 1600 mile....3 day trip to Calif.......lots of fog on Oregon and No. Calif highways.

Just got done plowing the drive and parking area with the tractor for the first time. I hope I never have to plow with the ATV again, what a difference. Quicker overall, heaver plow (back blade) for really leveling and getting rid of mounds, and finally no more concern over a bank is getting to high.

Still have to get some skills with the FEL. Very effective but certainly a bit slow while I'm learning.

Once during battle of bulge, on a foggy night they advanced. In the morning they found out the infantry had retreated, they were now on the front line. He recalls after the snow storm, christmas day was clear, and you could barely see the sky there were so many airplanes, bombers attacking.

He said it was "kill or be killed".

He used to not talk at all about it, but later in life talks a little more.

After awhile with practice moving snow becomes almost automatic. I use the FEL to move/lift/carry and the attached box scraper blade as a dozer blade when I am going in reverse. I should use my tractor's swivel seat more often to minimize strain on my body.

I do not know about the posters here, but I am an habitual seatbelt user. My tractor's seatbelt recently died. I thought that it was just frozen with the last snow storm. It's not frozen. It will be replaced ASAP.

Our parents in in some cases grandparents represented the greatest generation. They survived the Great Depression and WWII some WWI and others Korea. They knew and lived poverty and want; the value of work and money; and commitment, loyalty, responsibility, and sacrifice. I feel very fortunate to have lived and learned from those who are in my opinion true American heroes. American society and culture have changed.

12 this morning and headed to 20 today. Was 0 when I came in @12:30am and 5 @4:30 when I moved from the recliner to the bed. So nice warmup.

Chickens are gone. Party time.

We’ll have 2 crews there at 5:30. 10-4.

First crew made it at 5:30. Second crew 8:30. First crew is the one that got hung up the night before. Second crew got stuck tonight in the same spot. Didn’t need a wrecker though and able to be salted out. Then they got stuck in my driveway. I have a hill with a curve in it and it really twist the tractors. I was able to lay enough lime sand down to get them up. Then first crew got stuck leaving. A push from the other crews loaded forklift and able to get going. After midnight before they were done and they still had more chickens to go get. Roads were worse last night than the night before when they cancelled but they put more effort into tonight.

Drew. Corn sets its yield at growth stage v-5. Minus pollination issues. So fertilize before that. V-5 is when the 5th leaf sets out flat from the whirl.

I remember dad saying that he had been awake fi4 3-4 days, finally went to sleep, he woke up to guys yelling, “Hey, this ones not dead!” While asleep the Germans overran the position, and the Americans took it back, and he slept through it. He said there were dead and wounded Germans and Americans all around.

People who were at the movies told me that when the first "Battle of the Bulge" movie was shown that during the scene of German panzer tanks breaking through the American lines and over troops my Father dove under the seats and could not move. They had to stop the movie. I found my Father's commendation that came with his Bronze Star with a "V" for Valor that he earned and that he had hidden. My Father due to casualties had to take command of 3 anti-aircraft artillery batteries that were now being used as field artillery due to the weather. Those guns were somehow able to be repositioned to the high ground overlooking a German mechanized division hiding in the forests below. Things did not go well for those German soldiers. The timed fuses on those artillery rounds created airbursts and between blast concussions, the shrapnel and the exploding trees created shrapnel it was carnage down there. Then the weather broke and the air war resumed. He never talked about this. He joked about the Bronze Star saying they were being handed out like candy. Everyone there should have earned a Bronze Star or better. The Germans especially the SS troops did not take many prisoners at that stage of the War. To the German's "credit" they killed allied prisoners indiscriminently (sp?) race, religion, ethnicity did not matter.
