You raising any salmon? I love a good smoked salmon.
Not yet ... but I do love it.

Some of the best smoked salmon I ever had I got in a supermarket up in Red Deer, AB ... it was smoked and candied ...

That sounds good. My mom always did kraut and pork for new yrs.

Yeah ... some years it would be a twofer ... sausage dumplings and a pork roast cooked along with it.

Mom usually used a combo of Jimmy Dean's regular and hot sausage for the filler in the dumplings. Roll the dough out flat and then cover it with the sausage mix and roll it up into a log ... then slice that into sections about 2' thick. Cook those over a bed of kraut in a big pot.

Had a pretty good project day.

It's a bit early but that pork and dumplings sounds mighty good...

27 out now, about the high of the day. Going to stay inside and maybe plant a tray of onions and shallots.
My neighbor and I studied the NC gardening guide by NC State and we looked at the onions and both thought, NOW.
He was excited to get on the list for a seedling sampling of my 8 varieties of tomatoes. Am glad I have a backup big freezer, my goal is to have it filled up this year with frozen veggies.

We both discussed my plans for the excess crop. Though doubtful our other neighbor will stay sober enough to make this work, my plans are to grow an acre of potatoes, have them coming out my ears, package them in three pound bags, and put up a sign saying FREE POTATOES!, with an arrow pointing to our farmer neighbor's lane. There he will be sitting, with his new folding chair and table I gave him for Christmas, and he can give away potatoes, and sell containers of veggies for two or three bucks a piece. Then he gets to keep half and I get the rest. Well, it's a plan anyway. I'll see what my reality is come April or May. Pretty sure much/most will go to Food Bank which is a prime goal also.

Going to be a new year soon. My goal this year is to manage my sugar intake better, get my lab readings down below 100, and, well,
find a lady who can tolerate me.

19 going to 26.

David, that deck looks real nice...and the Tundra, too. Sure looks green where you live.

RS, one cool place that will be once finished. Had guppies once and goldfish when I was a kid, but really do enjoy gazing into a nice aquarium.

Wish I hadn't woken up at 3:45...planning to see the New Year in with friends...maybe I can catch a nap this afternoon so I don't doze off on their sofa.

Cut down some smaller dead trees yesterday and cut up into firewood...got a nice pallet's worth plus some leftover logs in the grapple. I've got a few more to cut but will not do that today.

Started taking the tree down yesterday...very early for us, but we were just in the mood...all ornaments off, and today will remove the lights and take the tree outside to the brush pile.

I think I got all my end of the year transaction done: extra donations, prepaid personal property taxes, dog food orders with 50% off before the end of the year.

We must be crazy, I got up at 4:15!
Kids are here for “Christmas”. Went to dinner with the whole group last night. I did go to bed a little early, grandkids wore me out. I think I’m going back to bed and see how that works.

Southern tradition mandates black-eyed peas and collard greens. And corn bread.

Almost never have collard greens at our house; usually have turnip greens when we have greens, but we definitely always have black-eyed peas and cornbread New Years Day.

That pork and kraut sure sounds good to me, but my wife won't have anything to do with kraut.

Good morning to all on this last day of the year. Options for the day are catch up on tax and farming paperwork for the past year, or alternatively play games with older grandson and try to help keep baby happy. Not exactly the most difficult of choices ;)

When I took this picture the other day it reminded me of those who like to grow a beard for winter.

Good Morning all.

-18F with a forecasted high of -8F A mix of sun and cloud. Wind NNW 13 mph.

My cold has broken (I think). The d-i-l is trying to blame me for bringing it into the house. But I distinctly remember about 3 weeks ago I took her (she doesn't drive) to the Dr.s at her request because she was barking like Sammy the Seal. She got a bunch of dope (more payments of Quacks yacht) and then I came down with this cold. I pointed this out to her and she has stopped whinging about it.

She has been pushing me and her old man (my step son) to get a flu shot. He does, I don't. My theory is that you do NOT build up natural immunities to the various strains of colds and flus when you 'do' a pill/shot for them.

Ah, the trials and tribulations of living in the same house as a Brit, a Canuck or two, 7 cats and one pug ugly dog.

You guys that gotta break out the thermal underwear for 0F temps, try to stay warm. :D

Eric, winter beard?? Try year round. I haven't shaved in 10 years. A trim once a year is what I get.

You got that right. In fact after looking at the forecast and today at 32 is the warm day, I'm headed out to prune the fruit orchard.
And for sure I will have a set of sweats under the overalls to keep warm. I'm not a hunter so no fancy underarmor gear. Shouldn't take me more than an hour or two.
but it does mean using a large fairly heavy ladder. What I'd really like is for someone to lift me up in my man bucket with the tractor but doing it the old fashioned way is
no strain for another couple of years until the trees become full sized. Then using that bucket will be a good solution for me for pruning, with a helper.

I was going to trim my beard yesterday as I keep it fairly short and thought with the temps this coming week, let it grow longer.
Just a marvelous insulator for outside. Like your own little portable face fleece...
Mine will come off in February when it starts getting warm here again.
L4N, beards there must be very common. Takes some maintenance, like pruning a shrub.

11°

Woke up with stomach not feeling good. Hope it's nothing. I did eat a "hungry man" microwave dinner yesterday that was absolutely aweful.

Will try for some more sleep.

Good morning all, 13 this morning going to 21 with a 20% chance of snow later today. 7 tonight, need to get a pair of coveralls to walk the dog. Piddled in the shop yesterday working on some old hand planes. Hope to take it easy today. Mom is better, got her pills strait for now. No special food for us for new years though I have a friend that has pork roast, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, and they are very good.

Drew, my dad used to make the hole and fill it with hay to store potatoes, cabbage and turnips. Made a frame of 2x6's and a door to fit. Called it a kill though I have no idea why he called it that.

Randy, sounds like good "kids", you are blessed.

Lookingfornew, I keep mine trimmed but have had it for 26 or 27 years now.

Praying for everyone. Ed

Poured first cup of coffee. -1° with partly cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 14° with some sun. Not sure what I am going to do today. Couple of lathe projects setting on the bench in shop. Still need to cleanup snow on walkways and drive. New Years Eve is Crab Legs and Shrimp. Then get some sleep. Wake up to see New Year in. Maybe.
Talking about fish, I wonder how my garden pond fish are doing. Pond aeration pump is working but hole in ice has been frozen over for a week. The fish usually make it through the winter. But this is the longest I can remember it being frozen over. Looks like it will stay that way for another week or more.
David, deck looks good.
Got a email from AZ yesterday. George Staerkel died while doing one of the shows at Silver Star Theater. He was a singer with the Tokens. Most will remember him from the song The Lion Sleeps Tonight. We attend shows at the theater many time over the years.
Prayers for a better New Year for all.
Good Morning All.

It's just been hovering around the freezing mark since about 6 p.m. yesterday, 28 right now, going for 14 tonight and not supposed to get above freezing before Wednesday, 1/3/2018. Nothing like it is up north, but too cold too long to suit this southern boy. When it warms up enough outside, I'll put the bagger on the lawnmower and get the leaves up in the back yard. I prefer that method to raking, but I'll probably wait until the sun is shining and the temperature is 40 or more.

I've already started my annual cleaning out of the file cabinet; shred some, put some in the recycling bin, and some to be bundled to keep for 5 years.

And today is my wife's birthday, but I don't think she'll want to get out of the house today.
