I used to enjoy turnips both the turnip and the greens. Then a friend turned me onto these and now I love them, I swing thru the greenhouse regularly and grab a couple for snacks!

Those do look and sound good.
Roasted Hakurei Turnips with Israeli Couscous Salad Not Eating Out in New York
I'll have to keep an eye open for them.
Has anyone in Texas seen them?

I'm mixerless tonight, I took the smoking mixer back to Costco. Several reviewers mentioned the motor burning up so I wasn't adventurous enough to try another. I guess will knead by hand till I get arthritis. In the meantime I'll keep my eye open for a older model at a garage sale or estate sale. I have bought so many things lately that have broken before the warranty expires.

Good evening all. 39F this morning, clear, calm wind. High temp was 63F and wind were light today. Yesterday start was 62F, overcast, light wind (did not last long). Wind was 25-35 most of the day with peak gust 39, Max temp was 71F (early in day). Yesterday bike ride in Denton, 68 miles, mostly north and south, 5 hours ride time, 6 hours overall, and Rudy's BBQ did lunch :). Today choir sang at Chapel, updated GPS for car and golf and cleaned rood dryer vent, that is it. Couldn't get out of low gear today for some reason. Photo is Ray Roberts lake, wave were about 2 feet in height.

Thanks, just showed those to my wife and now she is going to try growing them next year.

Good morning, even with the wind blowing it feels unusually warm outside for late November, with a high of around 14C/57F expected. No need for a hat, which in a way is a pity as it's about the only thing that will tame my hair in a morning. The thinner it gets, the more I look like I've been playing with a Van de Graaf generator.

Yellow turnips (we call them "Swedes") mashed together with potatoes was always one of our most common winter foods because of their low cost and is still one of my favourites.

RNG, nice pics, that was a sunset worth sitting out for. Ours showed lots of purple promise that never quite came off - now I see the sun had obviously been saving the best bit just for you.

Good morning.
13 and a high of 30 F. 30% chance of snow. Wind NW 7 mph.

I gotta go to town today and get a new snow shovel. Broke the plastic P.O.S. yesterday. I surely wish I could lay my hands on a good old steel one. They might have been heavier, but they lasted more than one or two winters. I use a shovel to 'do' the deck and steps. All the rest of the place gets done with the Kioti.

Have a good day.

Good morning all, 29 this morning going to 49 and sunny. Spent about 8 hr's in the ER with mom yesterday, got home about 10 pm. She was having a very hard time breathing. They said her hiatal hernia was letting a good part of her stomach was in her chest cavity and that there was nothing that could be done. surgery was very hard on you and was only for young people, to that she said, "Is 39 to old?" she is 93 at least she still has her sense of humor. Was going to Costco this afternoon but have no idea what I will do today.

Drew, The people in my area ate poke but only the very young plants were thought any good to eat. I never liked cooked salad greens much and turnips even less but we put kale and spinach in our juice pretty regular.

RNG love the pic's, thanks.

Randy, like the new ride you are looking at, price makes more sense than a lot of others.

Looking, I got an aluminum grain scoop for snow 30 years ago and love it and it is still going strong. Get a long handle one and you will love it.

Have a great day. Ed

Coffee is done brewing. 27° with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 46° with partly cloudy skies. Lets see what I can get mixed up today. Dentist appointment for teeth cleaning this morning. Then couple of cleanup things around garden pond. Buck chased a doe thru front yard yesterday. About the only deer we have seen on our place all year.
RNG, fantastic pictures.
Eric, we called them Rutabaga. But have not done them is many years.
Good Morning All.

temps have dropped to 28, bye bye roses. Remarkable how durable those knockout roses are though. They shrugged off the last two
frosts, some kill off but then started blooming away. So nice to see roses blooming at Thanksgiving. You folks in Texas are spoiled, like the Floridians with the warmer average temps that allows the more exotic plants to keep blooming. The walkway coming in at my friend's home in Florida is like a botanical garden, big reds and yellows, all kinds of colors blazing away. Absolutely beautiful. And what do we have? yeah, brown and grey. Though I'm not looking for snow which would make everything look beautiful.

I bet my friend's plants took a mild beating in that hurricane recently. Which reminds me, and I'm really digressing here, of an observation of mine that no one seems to do any work themselves in Florida, they hire everyone to do everything. So much money has moved down there I wonder if it has mentally polluted the work ethic of the state.

Anyways...the landscape gardeners after a big storm just rake it in, literally and figuratively. All those palm fronds on the lawn.
There must be an army of a million Hispanic landscapers that move over early in the morning to the wealthy coasts from the poorer middle of the state, the Swamp...
I lived on a boat between Ft Lauderdale and Miami for three years. My wife and I couldn't wait to go home.
The Northerners were too often the Ugly Americans, which I guess is an older term now.
Crass, selfish and unkind. They do settle down after they've been there awhile. Some remain insufferable.
Money does really corrupt the minds of some, builds a sense of self importance that just isn't healthy.

back to regular programming

Good morning! 38˚ and they said the low was going to be 42˚ and my garden is uncovered. I hope it does not drop any lower before the sun comes out.

Ed, I hope your mom feels better.

Today my Mom and my sister-in-law's Mom will be having a tamale making party with our tamale making machine. Mom has been slow cooking a pork roast over night for the center of her tamales and of course our spicy beans will be in ours. We are taking our 3 pressure Instant Pots to quicken the cooking time after we wrap them in the corn husk.

My Mom is the expert in German cooking and my SIL's Mom Tex-Mex so we will be making German/Mexican tamales.

Ed, sorry your Mom is challenged, and hope she breathes easier and feels better. Must be hard on you.
Some where and some time in Heaven she will thank you.
Your "son" is blessed to have your love. You are walking the walk and are a good man.
You and Don and so many others that take such good care of elderly parents. You'll never get enough thanks,
but your pleasure I know is internal.

28 and crystal clear going to 63.

What a gorgeous evening you had, RNG...looked like a special time.

Randy, I didn't know you could get an ATV at that low a price. Enjoy!

Don, German Tex-Mex sounds yummy.

Some of you probably have your land in a lower real estate tax rate designation for ag/forest land. I spent several hours yesterday working on some tax issues for the family's farm...owned by relatives, but I manage it and get to hunt there. We leased about half of the farm to a power company to install a solar farm, and they are almost ready to "turn it on." However, Friday the county sent me a tax bill, rolling back the tax savings for the last 6 years. It is a big bill. I'm trying to work through the details to ensure accuracy, and reading over the solar lease to confirm if the power company must pay it. Plus the county also sent a reassessment notice for next year...solar land is clearly worth more than peanuts, cotton, corn, and soybeans. I plan to meet with the Board of Assessors to flesh out the details of the increase and talk about some discrepancies in their records.

I made two new bird feeders yesterday, so need to mix up some peanut butter corn meal suet to fill up the holes in the cedar logs.

last time I set that stuff out a bear bent my metal feeder stand like a pretzel. No more peanut butter here. Sorry birds.

Billie, I hope the utility is "on the hook" for all of it.

The temperature just dropped again and I see frost in the valley it's creeping up the hill to the garden. The sun is just rising so the race is on. Which one will reach the garden first.
