Thanks Ed. 30th is the day.

Mowed along the driveway and my palms. Probably should get another section, but likely talk myself out of it.

Went to a local nursery and bought seven trees to plant this week; going to pick them up tomorrow morning.
17 dollar six foot tall hollies plus one big 8 foot magnolia tree to replace the one in the back yard I just took down.
Everything was very reasonably priced and the place was orderly and almost spotless.
Female ownership...I bet her home is similarly nice.
I have about 20 more holes to fill out of the original 110+ I dug. If I get these seven in, I will have made good progress.
Oh, a big rose plant that was blooming made it in the truck plus two big mums that are now at the end of the lane.

Certainly a possibility those potted mums will grow legs. Maybe same person who stole my decorative turtles. A thief on the loose.
Worse, could be a local who doesn't like me for who knows what reason, being a Northerner, and having a nice home among most homes that
are much smaller. There is so much trash thrown out on these rural roads, on the always neat roadsides that everyone pitches in and keeps nice no
matter what kind of home you own. So all those trash throwers just might be stupid enough to steal something. Stop out on a public road in front of everyone and snatch and grab.
Could be a turtle-napper coming back.
But if I get annoyed, they will have accomplished what I think they want.
Or, they are just plain thieves. I wonder if my beautiful turtles were sold for drugs.
Dismal thought.

Still have five turtles out at end of lane. All have holes in them or broken limbs but you can't see that from the road.
But not worth stealing...

ah human nature. we have a long way to go to finish being civilized.

I have the same problem out here, Drew. A neighbor was down at the boat launch across the canyon from me when a passerby started bad mouthing "that rich a$$hole up on the hill." He was referring to me, as my place overlooks the launch. My neighbor asked him if he'd ever met me, and if not, why he thought that. The guy's answer was because it was a big house and obviously a lot more expensive than anything else in the neighborhood. In reality, it's less than 2000 square feet, and only looks nicer because it was built ten years ago, not the thirty something years of most of the others. And it's not a run down double wide surrounded by trash and blue tarps, of which there are more than a few. Mostly, though, I think it's because the house sticks out all by itself on the point, and can be seen for quite a way off, and I keep the yard picked up and the brush cut back. It's been my experience that lowlifes are always looking for somebody else to blame for their condition instead of looking at what they could do to improve their own lot in life. And when they come across someone with something nice that they've worked hard for, their first inclination is to try to run it down, mess it up, or steal it.

Ron, you sure that isn't some of the whooping crane eastern flock? Still, a beautiful sight.

Finnly had a birthday today! We all had pizza, cake and ice cream and she got some cash and presents. Mommy got teary eyed when reminiscing her early year photos. We have put her back in public school this year, and it has not gone real smooth. Any prayers would be appreciated. She is adjusting a bit, but doesn't like the school work. It goes a bit better when you can "spoon feed" her the work.

PJ, hope your new to you box provides a good frame for your speakers. What type of speakers do you prefer for the $$$? Some time ago, I watched an interview with Tiran Porter of the Doobie Brothers. He never knew how to read music. But he still played an incredible bass.

Crappy. Don't tell anyone, but they are much better than tilapia. They are my favorite fresh water fish.

How much water to shock a well wngsprd?

RNG, stop keeping your place so nice so we won't have to talk about you.... ;)

Have a great evening y'all.

Good morning all. 62 going to 84 and sunny. My wonderful nap yesterday made my nights sleep not so wonderful. I guess it will work out in the end. Got to run to the grocery and a few errands this morning and then ?????

Kyle, Prayers sent for Finnly.

RNG, I think I have an old blue tarp here somewhere that I could send you, If it would help with neighbor relations. Drew, I might even have two.

Have a great day. Ed

Bands of mist are marking out the contours on the landscape this morning as the sun attempts to steam away memories of last night's rain. It would be very peaceful, except for the incessant honking of a large flock of Canada geese that have taken up residence on one of my neighbours fields. I struggle to think of any other creature that always sounds so stressed out and agitated.

Drew, sileage bales are a lot easier to make than hay in our climate, so are quite common here, far more so than traditional hay.

IMG_20170917_175255.jpg

Each of these bales has 6 to 8 layers of wrap to keep the oxygen out as farmer explained and once they are stacked any later movement, even with soft squeezer arms on a loader, risks letting oxygen in, so we take off just a few at a time as needed. It's not unknown for crows to peck holes in bales too, which soon ruins them as they start to spoil after only a few days of oxygen getting in.

Wrapped sileage bales leave behind messy plastic that cost money to recycle, whereas hay bales give us bountiful supply of baler twine, without which many farms would literally fall apart.

NWS says we have 68 degrees going for a nigh of 77. They also show that we got .01" of rain just before midnight and another .01" just after midnight. I guess that's the 30% they've been forecasting the last few days. At least I'm glad for the cooler weather.

71 going to 83, then autumn temps arrive tonight.

Glad Finnly had a nice birthday, and hope things improve in school.

Kyle, Once I take the cap off the well, I'll measure depth and calculate total volume of water, but to get to 200ppm, I estimate I'll need 5 gallons of unscented chlorox. I did find that the near-ground level seam between concrete casings has a crack in the grout. I think that's the ticket for fixing. I need to determine the best material to use to patch.

RNG, nice summary of how envy can destroy.

Cut another load of firewood yesterday. Even though the temps have hit 90 on a couple of days of cutting, it hasn't been as bad as I thought. I have one more load to cut. Once it cools off more, I'll cut these logs into rounds and stack on pallets.

Drew, magnolia sounds like a good choice. When we lived in Virginia Beach, our back yard was ancient sand dunes covered with pine straw, with tall pines, wax myrtle and live oak trees, so no mowing required. A small magnolia had started growing, apparently from a bird dropping, so when we moved, I dug it up, and replanted here...it has grown so tall, and is full of blooms all summer. It has had some snow and ice damage over 32 years, but still looks good, and is one of my prides.

Poured second cup of coffee. 41° with some mostly clear skies this morning. Heading to 67° with sunny skies. Should be a good day to get some outside projects done. But have not decided which one yet.
Good Morning All.

I just have a feeling Finnly is going to be just fine! That was the feeling I got reading your post, Kyle.

I shocked my well when we built here, it was drilled in 1957 and serviced a small house that was on the property until 2008. But it didn’t take much bleach, my well is only 64’ and the water table starts around 10’ depending on season, but my supply is tremendous sitting on top of the largest fresh water channel in the region.

Cooler and drier today through at least the first of the week.

   / Good morning!!!! #62,757
Happy Birthday to Finnly and may she be as happy as a kitten in front of a bowl of milk today

Eric, good description, now I understand. I only partly understood hay. Thought it would be a fun thing to grow here but my older brother
who had done it said you just lose money unless you are really big. Besides, the idea of all those belts and springs and pulleys and adjustments
in a baler was a bit much for me.
So silage is green hay kimche. Or green something. YouTube videos of big tractors pushing silage up these ramps, compressing it?
I always looked at those videos and had no idea why they were doing that. Preparing it all for wrapping up.

Do the cows like silage better than hay because it's fermented? Is this their beer of the day? ;)
do pigs eat it?

   / Good morning!!!! #62,758
Drew, pigs eat everything, including you if you fall in th3 pen!

I found out yesterday that a very good friend was diagnosed with ALS, I still in shock.

I found out yesterday that a very good friend was diagnosed with ALS, I still in shock.

After I wrote that I thought, well, pigs eat everything, and are carnivores.
Randy, sorry about your friend. Long challenge ahead, good friends will make it as easy as possible.

So many folks with neurological issues, makes me wonder about cumulative impact of environment, everything from too many microwaves
flying around to living over ground that is emitting radon.

   / Good morning!!!! #62,760
Good Morning!!!! 67F @ 5:15 AM. 0% Precip. / 0.00 in. Mostly Sunny. High near 85F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph.

The well and holding tank here were coliform contaminated from sitting so long when I purchased this place. The water treatment expert recommended three of the marble sized pool chlorine tablets for each, Told me to let it sit an hour then run every faucet for a few minutes until I smelled chlorine, then let it sit for another 24 hours before flushing. He also provided an indicator solution to tell when the chlorine had been flushed from the system.

Believe it or not, Ed, one of the realtors we were using while house shopping in the Gold Country south of here used the number of blue tarps "on display" in any given area as a measure of the quality of neighborhood. Extra points were given to those who used them as substitute roofing material. Thanks for your offer of the blue tarps, but I get all I need from the neighbors when the wind blows, and have even brought them home as Harbor Freight freebies on occasion. They come in handy for keeping the driveway clean when changing oil on the tractor or truck, and since they're free I don't feel so bad about throwing them away when they get dirty. But when it comes to keeping something dry outside, I've found that the silver tarps hold up much better than the blue ones, and good old fashioned canvas tarps last even longer, all without looking like such an eyesore.

It could be you're on to something regarding the neurological issues, Drew. But I think those negative environmental causes have always been there, and now with people living so much longer, the cumulative effects are showing up more frequently.

Spent the morning priming parts for the old motorcycle, and almost ruined a gun because the paint started to harden inside it. Went to shoot another coat and nothing came out, and the paint had turned to jello. Lots of brushing with lots of lacquer thinner got it all out, but I wonder why it went off so quickly.

Then I took another swing at flattening the flange on the custom oil tank the mechanic had ordered for the van. He had me make some alterations that added to the warpage that was already there, but initially said it would be OK if we just used a cork gasket for a seal. But a few weeks ago he contacted the maker and they said to just use silicon sealant, but we measured gaps upwards of 0.020" and neither of us were happy letting them go. I ended up using a piloted cutter to shorten two mounting bosses that were holding the tank up too far, first having to fabricate a pilot of the appropriate size. Then an hour or two using a long bar of aluminum and strips of aluminum oxide sandpaper to flatten portions of the flange. I also used a machinist's jack to raise some areas that were too low. Got it to within 0.005" and called it good enough. If it still leaks, we'll have to cut off the mounting bosses and have it flattened at an engine shop that has a cylinder head decking setup.

Hang in there, gang, Friday's comin'!
