Good Morning!!!! 85F @ 5:00AM. Abundant sunshine. High 102F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph.

Red Flag warnings continue, and for good reason. Two fires about a mile from here along Highway 70 yesterday evening, probably caused by a dragging chain or defective exhaust. Fast response from local fire crews had both of them contained quickly.

Yesterday's delivery turned out to contain a new battery for the alarm system. Not the one I'd expected, but the one inside the control panel that I didn't even know was there. The alarm tech on the other end of the phone didn't know about it either, but somehow the right battery managed to find its way into the box anyhow. It took care of the low battery error and I got to sleep through the night without the joy of warning beeps every four hours.:banghead:

Early trip to Home Depot to buy a one gallon paint can, then over to an upholstery shop to fill it with industrial grade contact cement. Hope to pick up the correct shade of gray thread there as well. Then off to the DMV and the mechanic's. Fun day. The only thing missing is a visit to the dentist!

TGIF gang!

We had a couple of light showers of rain yesterday. Not enough to get excited about but enough to keep the dust down while I cut a few acres of grass in the evening. It was one of those "doesn't get better than this" times as swallows swooped all around the tractor, treating me to a phenomenal aerobatic display in return for disturbing a few insects.

CjR, hope you managed to ride the storm.

Thank you Eric. We got through with roughly 2K worth of damage. That's not even close to the 10K deductible so it will be our loss but that's OK. No big damage to deal with is all I hope for. I'm still fixing stuffs left over by past hurricanes. No need for new ones.

68°F and cloudy this morning, going up to 82° today with a chance of rain and storms most of the day. Looks like TS Cindy's remnants will miss us to the south, but it's dragging in moisture form the northwest which will not miss us. This is a good thing. We could definitely use some rain.

Wife had a new electrician come in on Wednesday to give us a quote for the basement work. Found out yesterday he'd already started cleaning up some of the mess in the rafters ... yet still no quote  . He's supposed to come back Saturday morning. Going to have to have a chat with him. I appreciate the gung-ho attitude, but really want to know what we're looking at from him first. Really not interested in surprises at this point. Want to get it done, but we do have a budget.

"Need to see if I can find that one thing I can't live without." = This is why I generally try to stay out of music stores, gun shops, and book stores. That one thing seems very good at making itself evident every time.

Better add Craig's List to those "can't live without" destinations. This followed me home last weekend!

I've learned to be weary of people doing the work without an agreement.
Last time I encountered that was after a hurricane. A guy came up to my house and told me I owed him $200 for cleaning up my yard. He insisted I paid and well.... the insisters in my hands were very persuasive to him in the end.

Nice. Yeah, I've been looking lately to replace my '85 Goldwing, and I've let about three really good candidates get away on C-list. I keep telling myself not to go there, but then I get a little time at lunch and, well ...

I think that's a problem pretty much everywhere, CjR. Disaster areas even more so. This guy we called because one of our other contractors recommended him as a replacement for the less-than-reliable guy we had doing the upstairs work. We know this will be the expensive phase of the electrical work (pun intended), but we just don't want to get to the end and find it $5K over our budget.

I don't understand why it's so hard to get a quote from these guys. :confused3:

Most of them see the time spent putting a quote together as a waste of time that could otherwise be billable doing real work. But to me, not being able to put together a quote is a sign that the person has poor planning skills, and just wants to fumble their way through a job on a time and materials basis. But as I've seen with the van mechanic, even though you get a quote it's no guarantee that the work will be done for that price or in the quoted time frame.:2cents:

37* this morning. High yesterday was 82*. Looking to be about the same today.

Some good guess, made me laugh.

I have a wife, tractor and guns. So I don't need any more of them.
But last Monday when I was at Harbor Freight it turned out to be wire ties for $1.99.
I didn't even know I need them!

Hope everyone has a nice day.
