Had a great veterans day experience at mission bbq. They always play the national anthem at noon, well today they had a veteran sing it, and honored all the vets. Of course they give them free lunch. Place was packed.

I picked up carryout and brought it to my dad, a WW2 veteran.

Happy veterans day and thank you for your service. 1478914185241.jpg1478914216368.jpg

Forgot to mention that we had no rain in October. I see on the news it is dry in the Appalachians too. Lots of wildfires. One of the reasons I have been off line is my new hobby of hiking. Hoping to do the AT as soon as I can talk my boss and Margie into letting me have 6 months off. Not making too much headway with either.

Larro, that's my hobby too (backpacking). It's hard to fit in with grown up responsibilities and 70-80 hr 6day work weeks though!
I keep my pack of stuff with me out here on the road and mostly grumble about not having time.
Trying to get 3 weeks or so lined up to go do the Long Trail in Vermont next year though.
I too don't see ever getting 6 months to do the PCT or AT. But I've did overnights on a bunch of those trails we read about.

Good Morning! 59F @ 5:45AM. A mix of clouds and sun. High 69F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph.

Peppermint oil is good, moth balls work as well but don't smell as nice, Lenny. I use the mouse poison as well because there are no pets around to get into it.

TGIF!

I had scattered the moth balls around my truck tires and left some under the hood once. It took forever to get that lingering smell out of the truck when I started driving it again.

I use the poison also(no pets).

I have thought about it, but as I get older, I need to get to all these things I want to do. Obviously, I'm not gonna get to them all.

1n the 1980s I was in the hospital waiting room where my grandfather was a patient reading a magazine article about the "World's Toughest Boat Race", is an annual race via the San Marcos and Guadalupe rivers, from Aquarena Springs in the college town of San Marcos, to the shrimping village of Seadrift on the Texas coastline, a total distance of 260 miles. Non-stop. Home .
I decided to do it. I trained, went on a few short canoe races found a willing partner and support group, got all the maps together and was just about to buy the racing canoe when my partner backed out. That dream never materialized back then but I still think about it.

Good morning everyone. My daughter is treating my wife to a weekend in Liverpool, with the highlight being a Rod Stewart concert tonight. I don't mind an occasional blast of Maggie May but that's about my limit, so my treat is to stay at home with my grandson.

Interesting to hear those lost/still to come adventures. Mine was to do the cycle ride from Lands End (the bottom left tip of England) to John O'Groats at the very top of Scotland. I already had the bike, tent and plenty of practice at riding up hills with the wind in my face, but the boss would not let me have enough time off work, the *$*%*&*. Ok, I should confess - I was self employed at the time.

Drew, I would much sooner have a Subaru like yours than any fancy sports car.

RNG

38 creeping up to only 52...much like me this morning slowly making it to the kitchen to put a kettle of water on to make coffee.

Too much lifting boards, pulling old nails, measuring, sawing and nailing up yesterday. Was able to reuse most of the old rough cut full 1x8 boards I took off the barn, but half of the battens must be replaced.

Sharp looking car, Drew...very nice interior...you said it's made from beans rather than leather? Looks like nice leather.

Larro, good to hear from you. The AT has always been on my wish list...hiked many miles of it, in most all of the states, but never done the through hike, Good luck.

Good morning all, 35 here this morning going to 52. Need to go shopping this morning and need to add some nail plates to the shop to be ready for the inspection. Other than that.....???? We will see. When I was a teen I went with my sisters family to a place called Moosonee, on the tip of Saint James bay that is on the bottom of Hudson Bay. To get there you ride a snow train from Cochrine. About half way there you cross the Moose river and they let off a few canoes worth of people. In talking to them later it took them 5 days to reach Moosonee (the train took a few hours) and they did not see a single person the whole trip. There is some white water to deal with but the fact that you will likely see no one for 5 days or hear anyone for 5 days sounds good to me. Always wanted to take that trip, have thought of it often. Never got to it. Thought of hiking the AT too but 6 mounts is a long time. It is less than 10 mi from here so I see the markers often as we go up on the mountain often.

Have a great day all Ed
