Sent the above pic to a manzanita loving friend of mine in hopes he'll come over and get that downed wood. I know he'll appreciate it, and I've had enough death defying tractoring to last the rest of the year. I think we can get his pickup pretty close, or I might help him load the FEL a few times and ferry it up to my little wood yard for him. I'll let him decide.

Not being familiar with manzanita, I did a search and Wiki now has me a little wiser. Still can't decide if your friend makes furniture, plans weddings, is an aquatic supplier or simply has lots of parrots in desperate need of something to grab on to.

Also made me think of Manolito in The High Chaparral, a program I haven't seen since I was a kid. Wiki put me straight on his surname - it was Montoya. Shame really, I think Manolito Manzanita would (or should that be wood ?) have made a good name.

Good morning all. Unusually, the dog had boundless energy first thing this morning. Made me even more tired just watching him run around. How early in the day can we take a first nap ?

44 right now...a pleasant, albeit cool, 62 as the high.

Dump run first thing today. I have a number of chores to do this weekend, plus some work I brought home from the job. This is definitely going to have a serious impact on my beer time or shooting.
I guess I'll have to prioritize...lessee...alphabetical:
A...no work starting with A
B...BEER!!!! (now, that's how to prioritize!)
C...catch a nap...
(this is starting to look pretty good!)

61 and dark. Sure seems to take a long time for the sun to wake up these days.

Eric, since Coco decided something outside was more interesting than her bed at 1am, and loudly proclaimed it, I've already had a nap this morning. :)

Decided to pull the old core plug aerator behind the mower while I mowed yesterday. It's been a few years since it got some use. Nice, moist, soft ground cooperated. Then planted some grass seed in some of the high wear areas.

Might try to check out a Classic Car Cruise in late this afternoon. Toppop, any special cars I should be on the look out for?

cooler morning but warmer day, hopefully drying out a bit today. Might take the Massey with the finish mower down the roadsides and see how that does. 7 foot fixed
deck, lot of scalp potential. Need to be careful not to get too far over, still a lot of water in the ditches.
I could not find a 12V outlet anywhere on the tractor, looks like a zero option special...
Need to install one so I can use my magnetic LED flasher when mowing.

Lawns may still be too wet to run the tractor over them.
But it finally looks like a beautiful day and I of course want to get out there.
Helper here mowing lawn today, though I had done most of it. Odd mowing around lakes in one's lawn.
Hope it drains today or more than two days of standing water starts to kill things.

Roy you have things better figured out than most of us.
David, one more flight, one more flight...
oh the meaning of Home Sweet Home.

It still amazes me how coastal areas can receive so much rain but dry out quickly compared to our local conditions which would take a week or more

Good morning all. 61 this morning going to 85 with same am fog and 20% chance of pm showers. Had a great day yesterday. Drove 3 1/2 hours and visited / looked around for 6 hours and headed home. This was the first total fun date my wife and I have had in many years. With the lack of respite we just did what we had to do. This was fun. Had breakfast with friends and then went to their music store on main street Maybery, right by snappy lunch. People were in and out picking and singing good old gospel tunes, mostly bluegrass. We walked around a bit and then went back to the store for a while and headed home. Stopped at a little diner and saw some guys that were picking in the store and sat down and ate with them and hey stole our ticket and paid the bill. Got home about 4:30 with a new claw hammer stile banjo in the car and a few other little goodies. Now just need to learn how to play it.

You all had a lot going on, took a while getting through it. Have a great day, Ed

adjusted the carb on the 1968 Cub Cadet, got the lights working, and now the fun part,
taking the nice new to me steering wheel off, no longer frozen on, and put the dash decal on the
new to me fiberglass dash. Thank goodness for Ebay. Lots of old parts floating about; easier to buy new dash than fix
old fiberglass one which was broken in two places.
Then put the old girl to work pulling my leaf blower down the driveway; clears off the pavement nicely. Woods is right there so might as well
just blow it away instead of picking it up. Nonstop pine needles.
Surprising how powerful 12hp feels on such a light little tractor.

First cup of coffee has been drank. 54° with partly cloudy skies. Heading to 70° with partly cloudy skies. Got motorhome water system winterized. Then got started cutting lawn. Front moved in and cooled things off. When I got done it felt like 40°. I guess I could have stopped and put on long pants and long sleeve shirt. Will have to put the shorts away until we get to AZ in December. Small projects on the list today.
Hawkeye, best wishes for feeling better.
Roy, good plan.
Good Morning All.

prayers go out to the families of the folks shot in the mall in Washington. How any man could shoot a bunch of women is
simply beyond where my brain can figure it out.
We need to be safe in our places of public assembly. I guess we need security at every door.
Or folks willing to step in as temporary emergency services and use their carry permit to good use.

Why hasn't technology come up with a workable non lethal stun gun that can go some distance?
Gosh we can put digital readouts on our toasters but we can't come up with an effective keeping the peace weapon?
Maybe if folks knew they were nonlethal more would carry them.
I would love to have something more effective at home than my big can of pepper spray hanging on the wall.
Tasers don't work in too many situations. We need real stun guns, right out of science fiction.
Fiction which often becomes reality. If we can't get along, can we at least stop killing each other?...

not meant to be political, don't want to say this in Unfriendly Politics. I speak to the human condition.

Good morning! 75 heading to low 90s, cloudy, chance of rain. Foggy, can't see my second cattle guard. Hogs were on the road during yesterday's evening walk and Whipper kept her distance. She is learning not all wildlife runs away when chased and the chase is all the fun.

Brothers are coming to the country to celebrate Mom's 86th today.

I ordered the new sift decal for my Dad's tractor dash to help me find the gears. It should save a lot of time from hunting and testing speed and direction, but until then I have to remember the patterns is not the typical 4speed "H" but a up pointing "E" (1,2,4) with a down pointing "U" (3,r), and low forward and high down. (Love my cruise control HST.)

Enjoy the day all.

The relevant passage in the Wikipedia citation is this one, Eric:

"Manzanita wood, when dry, is excellent for burning in a campfire, barbecue, fireplace, or stove. It is dense and burns at a high temperature for long periods. However, caution should be exercised, because the high temperatures can damage thin-walled barbecues, and even crack cast iron stoves or cause chimney fires."

We both like the wood for our heaters because it takes less of it to stay warm, and it leaves behind much less ash than oak or pine so we don't have to clean the stove out as often. And because it burns so hot, it doesn't leave creosote deposits in the flue.

The most common variety here grows to ten or fifteen feet high and has very shallow, if any, roots. That makes it easy to push over with the tractor, or to pull out with a chain. Not sure if I should call it a bush or a tree, regardless the large plants with the red bark in the photo above are manzanita. Most of the wood on the ground is also manzanita, but it's covered in dust. Once the rains start this winter, most of that should wash away, a good thing because the stuff is hard enough on saw chains as it is without adding dirt to the mix.

In the process I found out that at about a 30 degree incline the hydraulics on the Kubota go dead, and since I was trying to go uphill at the time, left me freewheeling backwards. After a brief pucker, both feet standing on the brakes was enough to get the thing stopped, and by that time the incline had eased and power returned. Won't try that again.

Wow, glad you are alright. 30 degrees is fairly steep, but obviously, your pickup tube got air in it. Can you fill it a bit higher level? I have had the oil in both tractors get so hot due to a slightly open valve, that it would make the brakes spongy.

Another visit to doctor this morning (one of my least favorite things)... First time I saw this doc, old guy that had done his homework (on my records and chest xray). He said there are lots of names for it, but basically some sort of airway/lung problem that is helped by asthma medicines. My wife was familiar with all the drugs he mentioned. He is putting me on heavy dose of steroids to get things back to normal, then preventative inhaler along with rescue inhaler. The preventative is very expensive and requires additional authorization by insurance so it will be a few more days before I can fill that one (assuming it is approved). Doc said I should sleep better tonight and by tomorrow night almost symptom free.

I am hopeful that it will improve that quick, it is very tiring to be wheezing all the time and coughing often. Sleeping has been a challenge for the last 6 months or more.

They have been talking on the local news about walking pneumonia here. And they said that it is common in older, illegal immigrant men, and that they just always try to "tough" it out instead of seeking medical help. Antibiotics help, but the problem is gaining resistance.

Good Morning! 66F @ 6:00AM. Sunny. High 89F. Winds NNW at 10 to 15 mph.

Last fall I waited until November to go on a leaf peeping motorcycle ride and missed most of the color. A friend of mine posted this link on his Facebook page, and it looks like mid-October this year is the right time to go. Nothing like the golds and oranges of the turning aspens in the Sierra Nevada.

Managed to sand and clean the front and driver's side of the van yesterday, and now I'm missing fingerprints on both hands. Maybe I should go rob a bank? That leaves only the passenger side, and with the two doors already done, it shouldn't take long. At that point it'll be time to re-hang the doors, and I'm hoping I can remember how they came off. And that I can find the hardware. Should be an interesting day...:confused2:

Looks like we're in for a nice spell of warm weather, with mild nights and light winds. Crossing my fingers Monday's predictions of "light and variable" winds holds long enough to finally finish this paint job.

65 this morning and headed to 91 today.

Still don't know what I'll get into today. Have some mowing to finish and birds to walk but that's about all I know is set.
