85F @ 8:00AM. A mix of clouds and sun. High 106F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph.

Farmer, maybe after 15 years it's enough that parts are even available. And you're right: If all of those gearboxes are the same age, it might be wise to keep a couple or a dozen on hand for when they break on Sundays. Or when they decide to stop makin' 'em, or offshore production so that they last only a few years. And the numbers for your chicken operation are truly mind boggling! Don't know how you keep up with them

Drew, just be glad you decided to drive yourself instead of take the bus. Think I'd use a router to inlay that angle iron into the top and front of the workbench; that would produce an edge that would last forever. Clean it up with a course belt in your sander and it would even look nice. A wipe with an oily rag once in a while would prevent rust, so there would be no paint to chip. Or spend a few more dollars and get stainless steel (you're not going to be purchasing all that much). I'm not much of a fan of the lip idea. Too often I'll be working on something that is either too big for the bench or needs to hang off the edge for one thing or another, and a lip would make it rock and not sit steady.

Mostly, I still have boxes I haven't opened from a move five years ago because I have no shelves on which to empty them. Sounds like you're makin' great progress under less than ideal conditions, and I admire your drive to keep going.

Eric, I have a bumper crop of yellow star thistle this year, I think in part because I first tried to cut/mow it last year just before it flowered. The plants just redoubled their efforts and flowered again, this time below the cut level of the brushog. Ended up using glyphosate on the whole meadow. That killed the plants, but I think they had time to form seeds before they died. This year instead of cutting, I'm spraying first. Then after the plants dry out and become brittle, I'll use a landscape rake to gather them, and hopefully their seeds, into a burn pile I'll light in the coming winter. Hope this works, as at this point I'm clearly losing the battle.

Rip, try an ad in Craig's List. You may be surprised at who responds. Seriously, though, I've had very good luck with CL ads, and have met some really fine folks through the buying and selling there. At any rate, it's free, and in spite of the media horror stories, safer than eBay.

Good point about the drought, Don: I only mowed ONCE this year. But I'd gladly trade a little more seat time for enough rain to keep the well pumping. Even though we got a bit more than last year, they're draining the lake faster than last year, and it didn't start off as high to begin with. Unless something changes, we'll break the all time record low level, and who knows what's going to happen to the ground water levels as a result.

Off to town this morning so the doc can have another gander at the unblinking eye. Hopefully it's just routine, but I'm not taking any chances. Then swing by the Kubota dealer to pick up those alternator brushes, and order the cover that should be over the electrical components on the RTV. I noticed the other day that it was missing, mainly because everything was covered in a thick layer of dust.

Harbor Freight as a winch mount on sale, so I'll pick up one of those so I can get some use from the 8K lb. Warn that came off my Toyota 4x4 years and years ago. Then I'll have no excuse not to get busy adding receiver hitches to the box blade and front chassis on the tractor. Could have used it last year to self rescue when the thing got stuck at the top of a terrace I'd cut for the propane tank, and a another time when it got wedged up against a tree and cost me a wrinkled fender. Might even rig one up on the Ford as well, though 8K is a little small for that monster.

Yesterday was the start of this years Iron Butt Rally, a cross between an Easter egg contest and an endurance run for die hard motorcyclists. This year's theme is 50 parks in 25 states, with the winner visiting as many parts as possible during the 11 day duration of the event. There's a new commentator this year offering lively recounts of each day's events, and a map tracking the positions of the riders. Fun if you're into watching other people suffer.

Happy Tuesday!

Thanks for the good ideas. great idea to route the edge of the work surfaces so the metal lip is flush. I chose aluminum finally with holes drilled every twelve inches for cap head screws coming in from the front. I have tons of leftover SS screws for the boat; shouldn't mix metals, nobility and all that, but in a dry environment not sure it's an issue. will definitely set the screwgun on low pressure and hand tighten all those screws so as not to dent the aluminum.

The carpenter who built the work surface over the existing work surface used very soft trim wood unfortunately and I knew the leading edge would not last long at all. So what to cover it with. Aluminum will be plenty strong for me; this is a woodshop only long term, not a metalworking or mechanical workshop. And aluminum will sand nicely with high grit paper and can get oiled when done also. Satin aluminum would be perfect actually.

good point about not wobbling on the edge. ok dokey, out comes the router. And yet another read of the big hardbacked How to Use Your Router publication I have. sure looks like you could take your finger off in a hurry with one of these things.
My medium sized Dewalt router has some kind of settable guide on it; all I need to do is grind out one inch over and maybe a quarter inch deep. Some of you could do this in your sleep. Just need to make sure there aren't any screws or nails in there hiding.
I think I'll clean up the full face shield I have and use it the first few times, in case I grenade a bit.

Drew, I haven't had much luck with those little guides that mount on the router, but a straight 2x4 or even thinner will make a nice one if you can clamp it to the bench top. My router howls like a banshee and dust makes me sneeze, so by the time I get the ear muffs, dust mask, and face shield on, even my own mother wouldn't recognize me.

The after you gouge that freshly sanded drawer front on a cap screw sticking out the front, you'll counter sink those holes and fill 'em with some flat heads... DAMHIKT

Made it to 77F today with some clouds.

The 3pt spreader is home, in the garage, on a dolly. Lifting it off my truck bed was near the top of my tractor's lift max height but I made it after climbing up on the truck bed just 4 or 5 times to mess with the chain. :p I read the op manual online once before I bought it but will have to read it again once I get some lime.

At the local farm & hardware store one ton of pelletized lime in 50 lb bags, $320. $6.40 per bag, 12.8 cents per pound. I have no idea if that is a reasonable price or not. We don't have Ag field bulk services around here. TSC's price is $6.99 for 50 lb.

Mowed the yard and weeded the garden this afternoon. Now I can walk past the asparagus guilt free for a while.

I ran across this scenario for the "end of the universe" as The Big Rip. I got a kick out of the "You are here" arrow. Cosmology is weird, fun stuff since no one really knows what the total picture is, or how or if the universe ends.

I need to weed my asparagus, real bad. What s stopping me is a horde of mosquitos. I guess I could put the bee veil on, but it gets really hot!

I see it dumped here by the truckload. Also see a spreader truck used, it looks like a cloud around the truck when they are spreading.

Good evening all. 74F this morning 96F this afternoon, mostly sunny with light wind. Worked on paperwork today, no progress in garage. Need to mow again, and have to talk to DR about my cholesterol. Going back to Missouri to see family this weekend.

The past two summers I didn't stay on top of the weeds in the asparagus. It didn't seem to hurt it much but the weeds probably steal some vigor. I remember asparagus growing wild along ditch banks in Ohio but the grass kept it choked down to just a few stalks here and there IIRC. I think the bed would eventually deteriorate if not weeded, especially if grass starts filling in. My asparagus bed is eight years old and still going strong.

We don't have enough agriculture in this area to support custom spreading of lime & fertilizer like you have seen. I can't swear to it but I don't think there is a grain elevator in this county.

Almost 1700 here and 79°F which is quite warm, but sure is great to be home. Need to catch up on thread and post as normal tomorrow. :)

61 right now...high today of 74 and a probability of thunderstorms.
Well, I see the light at the end of the tunnel (or is it the headlamp of a train coming the other way?) for this customer/supplier problem I've been working on the last few weeks. I've been putting 10-12 hours a day on this, plus an hour's drive each way to and from home. This thing is really wearing me down...hope it's over soon.

Coffee is done brewing. 62° with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 70° with chance to rain in morning then sun for rest of day. Got side tracked again. Getting FEL on and staring garden pond project done will happen today.
Roy, hope you get some rest soon.
Drew, doing a edge works best with a bit that has a bearing on end.
David S, glad you made it back home.
Good Morning All.

61F now mid 70's for high, late afternoon t-storms weatherman saying :( but next couple of days look nice :)

We got to watch another mother nature wonder last evening, twin fawns trying out there new legs while chase each other  on front lawn.

Well almost time to head to valley to work.

Enjoy the day all.

Fingers cross for you Roy,hope you get some much needed country relax time.

David, welcome home to Paradise. You will have pleasant memories of the Grand Canyon to ponder while watching the ocean.
Roy, hang in there buddy.
Dave, thank goodness for that info. I'll set my alarm clock to make sure I don't miss it. Hmmm, doesn't have a billion year setting...;) We humans, if we survive, will be on far away planets by then. Somehow I don't think you'll find that pic posted on the wall of any Catholic Church...

more mowing today; glad I got the hardest part done yesterday. It's pretty dry and dusty and mowing for hours gets one filthy; came in yesterday and took my sock off and there was a black and white divide line. Too hot for jeans
Will finish lawn today, then do field area, which is my reward getting into a clean a/c cab tractor.
The worst part about the dirt is it getting in my eyes;when you make a turn downwind hard to avoid a face full. I usually close my eyes and don't breath for a few seconds. One of these days I'm going to run into something doing that....

63 this morning high of 86 this afternoon big storms all around me last evening but none hit home. Moved equipment yesterday or evening should I say. Got home at 9:45 last night and now I'm really tired and the day is just starting. Small chance of storms today better chance tomorrow

   / Good morning!!!! #35,477
66 this AM. Those big storms that missed Buppies settled in over us last night. Lots of power outages and trees down across this area.

I got the lawn cut in spots when I got home last night. Fields need cutting again, but the tractors are all down and out and not here.

Have a great day all! Oh, still no bites on the milk cooler, don't need another grill, but that was a good idea.

I do that same trick - I did run into a fence post earlier this year...maybe that's why I had to eventually replace the front axle :).

65 going to 89. We only caught the edge of a storm last night. We don't need any more rain right now, but I'll never turn a little down.

Got more mowing done yesterday, between coffee roasting :). Today is waging weed war day.

Dave, glad you scored a spreader that you like. My old Cosmo 500 is still getting the job done. Lime is a bit less here (last bags were 3.99), but they may have to truck yours further. Have you ever tried to lightly till your asparagus bed in late winter before they emerge? I think I may have to do that to try to get a jump on the weeding...my weeds are out of control, but doesn't seem to hurt the asparagus...and we have a lot of wild here, too.

Roy, glad you seem to be on the home stretch.

Thomas, sounds like a lot of fun watching your deer.

Good Morning All, Well I got enough work done yesterday that I am off today... kind of. I need to go get hay for the horses, change the oil in the tractor, go get both diesel and gas in the transfer tanks, and mow the grass, and spray the weeds in the fields, change the oil in the mower. I have to work tomorrow and then we leave for vacation on Sunday. I feel like Farmer, the help I hired to work here hasn't shown up yet. At least it is some what cool today, 67 now, with a high of 94.

Drew, routing is like cutting, measure twice cut once. If you want a tight fit on your angle, rout it a little short, lay your angle and cut the edge with a utility knife. I agree with RNG, counter sink your screws. Also remember the inside of your angle is not a tight corner, so you may have to do a slight round over.

Wifes B-day is tomorrow, Not sure what we are going to do.
