RNG we didn't take these to the butcher. By the time the vet got there we were afraid of them. Haven't ever been around lightning killed cattle before. But depending on how they were hit as to how much damage and pre-cooking would be involved. Looked online and really couldn't find anything definitive about eating the beef.

We have always eat quite a bit of chicken. And really haven't changed anything once we started raising birds.

Simplicity parts picked up ... just have to cut the chains and we'll be ready to install:

attachment.php

Cost was higher than I was hoping for, $267.11 to do these four pieces. The cost of the sprockets should have been around $75 or so (impossible to tell for sure from the invoice which is somewhat confused, in terms of breaking out the parts from the labor) ... which means the labor - to turn the old sprockets off and fit the new ones - was around $190.

Overall, I'm pretty happy - I was under the impression that they were just going to machine things to fit and I'd have to weld the sprockets on myself. The new sprockets were welded on when I went to pick them up.

Also the guy knocked a $1.50 off the per foot price he'd previously quoted me for some good US made chain (not Diamond but comparable) and since I was a little short with a 10' length (that's how they sell it) he tossed in 3' of Peer import chain he had in the back, along with 4 master links, for free.

The cost of a single drum/sprocket assembly from the Simplicity dealer was $162.20, and the jackshafts (the ones with 2 sprockets on each shaft) were NLA from Simplicity.

The only thing that remains to be replaced are the large sprockets on the wheels ... and based on how they looked I think I can get away with letting them slide for now.

If I do end up having to replace them, the sprockets should run about $60 each from Yohe (compared to $172 from Simplicity)

Noodle 'em into quarters (or more) and you'll be good. It's easier on the saw than a cross-cut ... just be sure to clear the saw occasionally so the sprocket cover doesn't get packed up with shavings ;)
....

Pics ... don't forget the pics ... :D

Noodling will have to wait. That's FEL work over there in the store area.

Here are some show me pics, from the smaller tree.

69F after a high of 75, clear skies today. Very nice weather and tomorrow is supposed to be a repeat. The memory of last winter is receding. :D

Kyle, my condolences on your family's loss. Hopefully you had a good family gathering.

Good afternoon all. 73F this morning and somewhat lees humidity, mostly cloudy near calm winds. Partly cloudy 92F wind 10 mph SSW. Worked on finding sheets for bed, putting down throw rugs. Garage is still truly ugly, will start working on office and storage in laundry room and garage.

Kyle sorry for your loss.

RNG forgot to add these were beef cows. The kind you normally eat.

77 tonight and raining. TS Bill has made it to the Ohio valley. He has been trying to spawn tornadoes above the river in Indiana. The rain is just getting to me. I'm supposed to be on the southern dryer side of the system. And forecast are still for 2-4 inches. Radar looks like we will see our rain in bands. Until overnight when it's supposed to get steady. Then out by lunch tomorrow. Hopefully.

Got the Simplicity towed into the garage for repairs ... had a good look at the big sprockets ... they're pretty worn ... probably should be replaced ... :(

And got the largest log cut into 20" long rounds ... wound up with 5 of them, and 1 round less than 20" in length:

430371-good-morning-img_2200-jpg

Also got the smallest of the three logs cut into three pieces, roughly 40" in length each ... still way too heavy for the Kubota to pick up. In fact it was all it could do to just push (roll/spin) the whole logs a little, so they could be safely cut.

I was able to pick up the 20" long rounds tho' (just barely) ... enough to move them.

Heading up to the shop here in a bit ... probably try and get the chains cut to length for the Simplicity, get the teeth welded on the rippers for the box blade, and the log splitter cylinder pulled apart.

Noodling will have to wait. That's FEL work over there in the store area.
I tried it on one of the rounds off the small end of the largest log ... wasn't quite as quick as I thought it would be, but I might have dulled the chain I had just sharpened, cutting the rounds.

Here are some show me pics, from the smaller tree.
Impressive maple stump

We had a light rainfall last night. It must have been just the right amount to accentuate the smell left behind by all the creatures that roamed the ground over the night. Dog has been trying to follow every single one of them. He is layed out now for a rest, but what he doesn't know is that our grandson will arrive soon and the excitement will start again. There will be one very tired dog come bedtime tonight.

What market weight do they want for the lambs?

It varies according to what the buyer's customer is after, these will generally not go until they are at least 36kg, ideally a little higher.

The stories I wrote were in 1718 North Carolina {a few miles from Drew}. I had to learn brick making and the ins and outs of lime mortar. This was a very interesting video I came across during my research. {I couldn't find the one I was looking for using oyster shells, but it's the same process}

The lime I use (St Astier NHL 3.5) comes over from France, supplied as a dry powder. Making mortar with lime costs more than cement, although in many ways it is a better material. It goes off very slowly, even at this time of year, so anything dropped when striking off the joints can go back in with the next mix, helping to keep the costs down. Some would say that's me being a cheapskate again (true), however reusing what you can was also the traditional practice and that appeals to me too.

If I had to make my own lime like those guys in the video, I doubt I would ever finish, even if that lifespan calculator we tried earlier this year turned out to correct.

good morning to all, and a warm morning it is here. Highs in the 90's for the next week, lows in mid seventies, a sprinkle last night but not much. Next rain is due in Wed, so I think Storm Bill is going to miss us.

Made some decisions while I slept. Am going to give my current 16 foot Scout to my oldest brother and his extended family, for use up at their family cottage at the top of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. They have a forty year old boat there on it's last legs. So I have to get it out of the water and deliver it to him in Virginia this coming week, so he can trailer it for two days driving 14 hours or so to his cottage. Makes sense, my attempts to use it have just resulted in me getting sweaty, or cold, and not having much fun versus the effort. Not the whole point of boating. I need to get out of the sun too; already had two melanomas, not like I should be courting more disaster. The little Scout is the only boat I've ever bought new, and likely to remain that way. It's market value is not much more than the cost of the motor I just put on it, so I'll get more satisfaction out of it just giving it to family. Hopefully they will remember Uncle Drew when they are out having fun. I just put a new gps chartplotter/sounder and vhf radio in it too this season; well, that should help keep them safe. Always better to give than receive...

However...I'm going to make an offer on the Albin also. The boat turns out to be way overpriced based on industry sold data, which I know how to access through the broker. You can sort by every make and model and see what the final selling price was, not inflated asking price, was for the last year all across the country. Which means I'm offering more than ten grand less, and the broker thought that was a "fair offer". The seller has a brand new rubber dinghy with four stroke motor, which overwhelms the back of this small boat. I have no desire to anchor out so I'm going to make an offer without the dinghy and see what happens. I can't sit in dinghys comfortably anyway, no back support.

Speaking of back support, I wish my JD X750 suspension seat had better side bolsters on it. I slide around on it too much; and not like I'm going super fast either. The custom seat I put on my old Gravely is cloth and is firm and black like an early Recaro seat. No sliding on that. The JD is squishier more comfortable but I feel like I'm hanging on more. Maybe I need velcro on my butt. I think I'll try a towel underneath and see if that helps. sure would be nice to have the ventilated seat out of my truck on my mower...:cloud9:

Otherwise, today I get the orchard sprayer going for the first time. Going to run a load of plain water through it first, use it to water some trees and then mix up a batch of three way orchard spray with some Neem oil added. Time to spray, lot of unhappy leaves out there curling up due to some crud on them. last time it all went away after I sprayed. This will be spray number four this season. And on goes the spray mask for sure. I have no idea what captan would do to my body but I doubt it mixes well with arthritis drugs...
Interesting that the same company makes a citrus variation of orchard spray without any captan at all, using what looked like high power pepper oil. Sure wouldn't want to get that in my eyes...

Spray this morning, escape to my woodshop this afternoon. More pics of that coming, it's coming along.
have a fine day and stay cool.

Poured first cup of coffee. 49° with partly cloudy skies. Heading to 79° with a mix of sun and clouds. Need to cut lawn again today. But before that headed to youngest sons place to celebrate my birthday and Fathers Day with a special breakfast/brunch.
Thanks all for the birthday wishes.
farmer2009, looks like I missed your Happy Anniversary.
Kyle, sorry for your family's loss.
Drew, good luck on the offer.
David S., enjoy the warm weather in AZ.
Good Morning All.

43F headed to 74F & sunny today.

It would be a good year to garden in a hoop house. That always sounds interesting but I'm not that dedicated to gardening and I'd be sure to be gone for a week at some critical time during the season.

RS & riptides those are some massive rounds to work with. The curse of free large tree firewood. :)

Yesterday I finished rock picking where a rock wall was. The wall followed a line of ledge coming to the surface in knobs here and there that made it impossible for the dozer to get a clean cut scooping the rocks up for the excavator. It was quite a mess and I'm glad that is behind me.

Farmer those three zapped cows would probably not bleed out very well after laying dead for a couple hours. Even if the meat was safe it may not have tasted very good?

Good Morning all. 78 here with a high only reaching 98. Wife and I are going to visit a couple of farmers markets this morning. Being a wood turner, you guys are killing me with those big rounds for firewood. So Rswyan, how close are you to Walnut Creek? Wife and I are going up there right after the 4th to an Amish school. Wonder if I can get one of those big rounds in her Nissan?
