The firebox in this new stove is really small. I load 2 16" - 18" 1/4's first which really fills the box up before I load the newspaper and then place the kindling on top. The kindling burns down; the coals ignite the 1/4's. The stove manufacturer recommended this top down burn method. It does work with this stove.

Isn't it amazing how well that top down lighting method works, Jay? When I first read about it, i thought BS, that'll never work. But then I tried it in the then new wood stove, my first ever, and it worked so well I've never tried anything else. Two newspaper knots on top of half a dozen pencil-finger size splinters of oak, and in fifteen minutes the whole stove is rolling in flame. Several large pines came down in the fire, and I'm making some short ends, about 6" in length, to split into kindling to try. I figure if there's enough sap in there, it'll light a little easier.:confused3:

Pulled a locust tree out of the creek where the power line trimmers left it. If you zoom into left of the pic, is a large tree they cut, that my tractor couldnt even push.
In the background is the broken power pole from the last outage, with a new pole beside it.

Cleaned up downed trees in my woods, then picked up smaller stuff.

My record for atomic oatmeal was 22 minutes on high setting, and took two weeks of soaking in vinegar on the back porch to get it free from the glass bowl. Yes, the glass was somewhat etched by the time I was able to use that bowl again, and it took several sprayings of the microwave with Lysol and wiping with bleach to get the smell out. Fortunately it was summertime, and keeping the windows open had the rest of the house smelling somewhat normal in a week or so. This is how I learned to always take a second look at the display on the microwave before pushing the Start button.:confused3:

ROTFL !! Lost half my drink with that one!

16 and headed for a high of 30 °F. Wind NW 16 gusting to 30 mph. Sunny.
The sunny conditions and the breeze will help to burn off the snow, slowly. That is what I have been looking for.

A conserve energy day today.

Have a good day all

Mostly, congrats on your anniversary.

64 yesterday morning, 34 this morning, more normal temps for March have returned. At least no temps in the ten day under freezing, a good thing for all the flowers I've planted.

Struggled with putting finish mower on new tractor yesterday, and even with help we just couldn't do it. Cat one mower just not fitting on a Cat two only tractor, spacing for one seems to be at 30 inches and second at 38. Lower arms just wouldn't come in far enough.
Worse is it appears the dealer sold me a new Bush Hog with the same problem, we couldn't get that on either. Not sure it's a matter of just swapping out pins either. Land Pride might make different lower "weldments" that dismount with a couple of pins, but not sure, will research on Monday. Most of my other equipment is Cat 1 and 2, with a double hookup. Not my LP finish mower nor this new bush hog. Latter the dealer will have to fix, but sure hope I can convert the mower. Meanwhile moved a lot of equipment around, trying to make use of limited covered storage. Once again I find mounting implements to be aggravating for one with reduced hand function and this is why having extra tractors is marvelous. But I need to cut back, declutter... and hopefully will not have to buy a new finish mower to solve this. The LP 84 inch rear discharge mower works perfectly, hate to see it go for something simple like this, but no amount of Googling found an optional hitch kit. Has nothing to do with spacers, it's a width issue on the lift arms.

Got a bill from local hospital for $5700 for recent MRI, which I find to be a laughable amount, saying this is not a bill but if your insurance won't pay we will bill you for the difference. Oh no you won't. Local Vidant hospital chain has predatory billing practices, hoping less informed will just buckle and pay these ridiculous amounts. Last time I wrote to President of hospital, the invoice promptly disappeared.
I have the best most comprehensive BC/BS wrap available locally for Medicare and for four years have not paid a penny out of pocket after all kinds of medical issues, MRI's, epidurals, operations, etc. You just have to stand up to these people, and tell them immediately you won't pay. What a racket and they prey on the fears of the patient. They bill for more than double what the procedure is worth, then hope a certain percentage of patients with deep pockets or deep fears will pay the balance paid after primary insurance. I simply don't like being abused and thankfully know how to write letters to The Boss. Yesterday a lady friend of mine showed me her bill from the same hospital chain and she was frantic about how to pay thousands of dollars on a teacher's salary. Some day I hope these hospital administrators all go to jail for white collar crime. A lot of folks would stand up and cheer.

Food shopping this morning, then not sure what is on schedule. Probably a little garden work, but all the beets and carrots are now planted and the next event, melons and okra, is at least a month off, they don't like the cold at all.

Hope you all have a good day.

24 right now...high about 30 or so.
Yesterday's plumbing job went smoothly, fortunately. Another project today is to work on the linoleum curled up by the front door. I had to do a similar repair at the deck door a few years ago....just laid down a length of molding which worked quite well.
