Question for you guys...any of you wear a respirator or mask when mowing? If so, what do you wear?
When I was mowing the sand land I used a wolf face mask. It was made with a sponge like material and was advertised for Mountain biking. But a quick search does not turn up anything. Probably the result of covid. It was good for sand and dust but not viruses. I like it because it was relatively cool and you could wash it out like a sponge.

Roy because of the heat here any type of rubber or plastic can only be worn comfortably against the skin for a short time. if I would have made a mowing video you would only see a cloud of dust, goggles were mandatory.

The Youtube video was from Florida...apparently the material doesn't bother that guy...although temperatures in Vermont aren't as high as they are in Texas...well, I'll just have to see what the comfort is...
I definitely know it'll be more comfortable then gasping for breath!!!
If I do find the mask uncomfortable on hotter days, I'll use a cloth mask.
What I don't like about masks, in general, is my glasses tend to fog

first thing I thought of looking at those masks, like Don said, was sweat dripping down on that "rubber" seal on a hot day and making a paste of dirt in there
rubbing around. I used my regular KN95 mask for mowing during the recent smoke incident and bad air, it seemed to work ok. By the time I was done mowing
the mask smelled, due to sweat dampening the ash I guess. I chucked the mask when done. Sure have plenty of spares as most of us do.
I think Roy's mask is a good quality 3M clone, as long as you can trust manufacturer of filter material, pretty simple device.

Good Morning!!!! 76F @ 6:00AM. Sun and clouds mixed. High 102F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph.
It was smoky all day again yesterday, but lighter in the afternoon. An N95 mask took away the smell, so I suppose that means I wasn't breathing in the particles?

Don, I've been shopping for a pair of goggles to keep the smoke out of my eyes, but they'll need to work over my glasses. I haven't found many reviews, just a lot of sales pitches. Any tips would be appreciated...

The main fire seems to have merged with the two spot fires on the northeast side, and now the total of acres burned is somewhere north of 180,000. Biggest fire in California, but the Bootleg fire in Oregon is over twice that size and still growing. Not something to aspire to. More road closures and Mandatory Evacuations. But so far at least, all we're dealing with here is the smoke.

Still no luck finding clean fill dirt for the trenches, but a neighbor and I have decided to partner up and build a set of grizzly bars to sift out the rocks. I think I've got enough pipe for the legs and frame, and hopefully he can find enough scrap for the bars. I'll be doing the fabrication.

I was very surprised to get a shipping notice for the drive shaft I ordered last week. The part isn't that uncommon, but my impression was that the place I ordered from was more of a car dealer. Car dealers can order BMW motorcycle parts, they seldom stock them. Not that I'm complaining.

Wire didn't show up, but should be here Monday. Same deal with the Ethernet extenders.

I got the manifold installed yesterday, and was able to pump water all the way up to the new tank. I was pretty sure that would work, and it's very nice to see that it does. Today I'll get it plumbed into the new tank, and try to get enough water up there to flush out the drain line back down to the pump house. But six inches of water in a twelve foot diameter tank is a LOT of water (423 gallons), so it's gonna take a while.

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend...

I have some dewalt safety googles that fit over glasses. But they steam up inside and within a few minutes I can’t see.

Just found this video containing shots of the fire from yesterday and last night. I recognize many of the locations, and it was pretty hard to watch. New total acres burned is something over 230,000.

Buppies - I know our summers are ALWAYS hot but this "heat dome thing" is the real PITS. The unfortunate part - it keeps me here in the house where its cool. So far, we have been extremely fortunate - only the lightest of wisps of smoke. And only for short periods on a couple of days.

I think, real hard, about projects that need to be done around the property. Nothing is so important that Brownie and I need to be outside in the afternoon. So we scurry around in the early AM and retire to the cool of the house in the afternoon.
Don't feel bad about staying indoors during the heat. We do a lot of that down here....especially if the humidity is high and there is little to no breeze. I took it easy yesterday too.

Work smarter, not HOTTER.

Had my coffee, wifey made it. delicious. Drew the muffins sound really good. I told my wife we should make some. She made toll house chocolate chip cookies using Ghirardelli chips yesterday. The kids pretty much wiped out the whole batch.

Mostly, was this your main TV? What kind did you buy? Glad wifey is happy.

BEF, hope it doesn't rain tonight. Take some earplugs. Not a huge REO fan myself but I liked a few of their songs. I preferred Cheap Trick as my fav mid west band.

I try to always wear a mask when I mow. Usually wear the N95 with the valve. I would like some eye protection, but the sweat is too much. So I usually have to deal with getting matter out of my eyes for a day or 2 afterwards. I believe I have a case of allergic pink eye in my left eye right now.

Took wifey out for a margarita last night, since it was National Tequila day. It makes me wonder who's in charge of making these special "days".

Have a blessed day all. Prayers for those in need, and our country.

70°F and 1.26 inches rain. The wet remnants of the 2 diminished hurricanes.

Another day out in caretaker land. Can’t seem to locate my drywall pole sander. Of course it has been years since last use. Just may have to get another as it is such a work saver.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

83F and partly cloudy @ 12:30, HI 88 and DP is 71, heading up to a high of 86F. Got 0.34" yesterday and 0.09" since midnight.

Got some more work done on watering rigs after my post last night, also fed 4 boxes of white worms. Have one box that looks like it should be ready to harvest today.

Given the temps and the sun, there should be some good drying today and I should be able to get back on the mowing later this afternoon.

But first a little road trip to get some pretty things for The Woman ...
