LFN, glad daughter is back, hope everything checks out OK.

I just got a call from the title company, closing is scheduled for tomorrow at 1pm.... I told them that was the last shot that they will have... after Friday morning, I won't be available.
I guess the very stern email that my son sent them last evening got them off their butts....

So far things coming together after a few concerns over the past few days, shop time successful this morning, got the first coat of the oil finish on the blanket chest

While this coat is drying, I'm going to go to the PO to see if my check is there.... keeping my fingers crossed!

Hope everything goes at the title company.

I was talking to a buddy about land in Texas, and he agreed, it's going up and up, around here. We are commutable to Austin, College Station, and to a lesser extent NW Houston.

So the same as it ever was, location, location, location. I'm worried that the barndo/land deals will have a lot of hidden costs such as water/sewer/electricity? The last good deal was my neighbors house, that I teased Wyoming and RNG to come on down. 5 acres, 2400 sq ft house, carport and separate garage. Paved roads, 2.2 miles to town. I believe it went for around $250K

35 going to 42 and mostly cloudy.

Ron, thank for taking some snow in the boots for that great pic.

Rich, quite the testimonial from your boss.

Buppies, you might have to catch rain water in buckets for your toilet. When we have a power outage, we use water we've caught in rain barrels, and any we've stored in anticipation. I heard another neighbor running his generator yesterday afternoon...wife brought home lots of groceries and birdfood...so we are ready for whatever falls from the sky...most recent forecast said up to 8" and a sheen of ice...at least no penitentes.

I don’t think your high enough up the mountain for them.

Surprised to find out that wells were drilled, electric is at the property line at the street, and paved roads. The only extra cost (supposedly) would be a yearly road maintenance fee, in addition to the costs of hooking up to the power. Most of those subdivisions have already sold out! There are more on the horizon, so when the time comes, I'll either be out of luck or right at the prime time.... time will tell!

Overcast and 37 and dropping, after a pretty sunny morning, looks like some kind of winter weather for the three several days. We aren’t predicted to get the extreme cold that it once looked like. Plenty cold though.
Spent my late morning and much of the afternoon in phone calls, some of which were to correct others mistakes that affected me. Also spent over an hour on the phone with my best friend whom I hadn’t talked to in a while. He lives about four miles away.
Funny how we lose touch so easily.

Have a good evening.

Here's my buddy's feedback when I asked him if he's happy with his Starlink service:

There are occasional dropouts, but they are relatively infrequent and short duration. Rarely more than a minute. And, most importantly - it gets better all the time. From what I've read, clear view of the sky is very important for Starlink, more so than for sat TV.

Way better than any other rural option for us. We do finally have a decent Verizon signal at the house, and hotspot does work well - but the data limits and throttling kill that option for anything other than mobile/occasional use.

Based on the comments here and his response, I went ahead and placed a deposit this morning. They're saying mid to late 2021...

If the response to sign up and put up the deposit every where is the same as has been reported here,
that is one heck of pre release interest.

weather advisory posted for 2-4 inches of snow tonight
sounds like a lot of cold and snow everywhere

Thanks. They are coal. I installed the regulators on them 6 or 7 years ago. They need some tuning parameters changed so they can run very low VARS at night when they need to. I don't mind going there to work. It's 45 minutes from me. I've been watching all the snow. I think I would prefer snow over the feet of rain we have this year.

Welcome and interesting occupation. I had a racquetball acquaintance that was the lead engineer at a coal plant. He took my college physics class to work one day, while the plant was down for revitalizing. Got to see a Westinghouse turbine opened up for maintenance, and the big mortar and pestle that ground up the coal to a small powder.

People want connectivity and decent speeds. Others are at their wits end dealing with poor customer service.

Snowing for the last couple hours, light ground coverage, supposed to do this off and on until Friday afternoon. Likely to be some freezing rain and sleet as well.

Welcome workinonit

I used to do power system design years ago as a rookie EE. But only worked on small 30-40 MW diesel backup plants. Was in a coal fired plant once for a tour.

Went in earlier so I could leave before the snow. It started a little later than predicted. Nice to get home before dark. About 1/2” so far. NWS finally changed us to storm warning, was an advisory.

Got most of taxes done, need to do state which is real quick.

The project at work is winding down, maybe 2 more weeks left. Then don’t know what’s in store.

I keep at least a dozen 1 gal jugs of water for emergency flushes during power outages.

LS, hope surgery goes well. And settlement.

Wife made really good chili for supper.

I looked at signing up for that starlink internet service, than saw $500 for equipment plus $99 a month, thought that was high so didn’t do it.

I'm home. My son had a positive test, and my company wants me to stay home rest of week and get tested on Friday. He's fine, bored, and wanting to go outside and play. Depending on results, I might get to go back on Monday.

Don, I had to use the chainsaw notch trick to split one of the big Post oak rounds with the electric splitter. It was prolly about 24" diameter x 18 long. Chainsaw was out of premix, and my son has ran us out of premix with his GT80....I had a small can of spare to get by with.

Is there such a thing as old oak being so hard....that it doesn't readily burn? This stuff is almost as hard as stone. Tuf on chainsaw chains. DAMHIK. :)

Kyle are you isolating your son from the rest of the family? Hope he continues to feel well. Watch him closely. Don't want to scare you but be aware - Dell Children’s part of international study into rare illness linked to COVID-19 | KXAN Austin

Once those really old hard oak pieces do catch on fire they really burn hot. Yes they are very tough on chainsaw chains. As we are cutting down cedars in the park every once in a while a large oak tree will need a few dead limbs cut. After those oak cuts the cedars don't cut like butter anymore and I have to sharpen my blade in the field.

Good evening all. 25F for the start, ice fog, ice on trees etc. Light to moderate wind overcast all day, high temp was 28F. Forecast is moderating in short term 37F for high tomorrow, but Monday now has high of 15F low of 10F :( not good biking weather.
Stoke fire to start day, Men's meeting was lightly attended today, Dr follow up from colonoscopy, quick run through store and fill up truck. Nap on C-PAP then trip to bike shop to pick up Volagi and drop Trek. Wife enjoyed stop at Red Lobster, then home, seems like I was moving all day. Heat exchanger on heat pump defrosting a lot.
