Good morning all...24 degrees here now. Just finished setting up the last two (HOPEFULLY the last two) online accounts for bill payment. Yes, I know online bill payments are the norm today and I also know they are convenient to use and reduce the chance of mail theft, etc. but I still detest sitting in front of a computer for more than a few minutes at a time. I'm not sure what it is about me but if I had a job that required me to stare at a screen and push keys to earn my living it would send me to the funny farm in no time. Even as I compose this I want to get up and do something else. Aside from TBN and Facebook I want to spend very little time online.

Coffee pot is brewing. 50 degrees with clear skies this morning. Heading to 77 with some clouds this afternoon. Going to spend most of the day cleaning inside of motorhome from all the dirt/dust that yesterdays winds blew inside. Need to get my sinuses cleared out first.
Good Morning All.

It's a fast and easy way to spend all your money and never feel the pain of it slipping through your fingers! :D

28 early 31 now, going to 43-45 with a deluge of 1.5"-2" coming today and tonight. We're getting all the rain and cold we didn't get last year. Bright side is I'm not hearing all the global warming crap!

Mornin' All, 27 and overcast. It's coming. I'm hoping for rain.

I did get away yesterday afternoon to do a little clean up. Mud season isn't "just around the corner" its here in PA. You know that feeling when you hit ice on the road? There is something similar when your tractor hits deep mud. Thank goodness for four wheel drive. I have been wondering if the gravel on the lane sinks or the mud rises? Looks like I need to stop off at the quarry for some gravel to fill some ruts. Driveway needs some more too. Looks like I have plenty to do this spring.

Good Morning! 42˚ clear skies light wind. Got zapped good yesterday by an electric fence when helping put out a brush fire. I saw the standard electric fence line a foot in front of the 5 strand barbed wire fence and stayed clear of it but I did not see the black insulators on the third barbed wire. My grounding hand thumb joint kept waking me up with intermittent spasms.

The good news is that everyone was very alert during the low humidity 50 MPH wind, red flag fire day yesterday, the fire was noticed early and the fuel load was light at the area of origin. It started from a damaged electrical line whipping up against a tree, was stopped just before it took off, only burning about 1/2 acre. I was very concerned because my place is about a mile downwind.

Sam,

You are a good man sir. Plus you seem to be a better weather man than the weathermen themselves...

I'm still finalizing the plans for the run-in shed, so I have not bought that lumber. Right now I am leaning towards using 12' posts (~3' deep) and building/buying trusses to make the roof. Nothing is finalized.... I still need to check southern states and others for the pricing/availbility of 16' posts... (really I need a couple 16', and a couple 14', and three at 12'...)... Decisions, decisions, decisions...

David
David don't forget to add in the cost of a crane if you go with trusses versus rafters and joist style. oh yeah one other thing when i put my post in the ground i went over to the tire dealler and got some old big inner tubes, i cut them and wraped my post up to ground level. i done that 22 years ago and they just as solid now as was then.

Bill, you know my feelings on online payments so I'll not mention them again. Suffice to say it's mail or telephone for me and NOTHING ELSE.

On a lighter note the weather here has been fantastic lately - sunny, cloud-free and WARM.

I cannot believe it.

But you know what they say - calm before the storm and all that...

Sam,

Are you trying to pull my leg?

I do not need a crane to lift trusses 9'...

If my Kioti wont lift them higher than that, I can tip them on end and lever them up onto the headers by hand (maybe need a rope, maybe not...).

Just 'cause I'm a n00b don't mean it ain't mean to pull tricks on me... ;) :D

I know, you're just looking out for me...

Sam,

Actually, I am still considering using rafters/joists again... Building or buying trusses is likely to cost MORE than 16' posts, and in reality the problem I'm trying to solve is how to attach the headers to the posts, while maintaining the correct angles and ensuring the proper load bearing properties...

Jury is out until I actually BUY materials...

David, I had a buddy with a Ford 1520 tractor, and when he built his pole barn he added an 8 foot long heavy gage steel "L" beam to one side of the bucket (bolted on) to give him more lift height for the truss installation...it worked well for the purpose and since his rear tires were loaded it was reasonably safe.

I just got a text message from my brother asking "are you ready for the blizzard?" and I had no clue to the forecast so I looked it up...ho-hum....maybe for once the forecast will be right.

Were your posts treated to .40 or .60? Have never heard of the tube trick, seems to me it would keep moisture away from the wood UNLESS they got a hole in them, in which case if might keep moisture around the wood. To be honest, I really don't know how long buried treated posts SHOULD last but here I have always used .40 treated. The oldest ones are at least 12 years old and still seem solid.

Good morning. It's currently 44 degrees with gusty winds and intermittent rain. Overall, it's a nasty gloomy day.
