23! I was not ready for that. Going to 50 today. Got my flagpole repaired and back up just in time to let it down ahead of this storm. Did the lattice underpinning on my new building. Did all the shutters to match on the weekend. I think I’m about finished with it for now. Now I have to decide what goes where and clean up the poor nasty garage.
Storm looks like rain and 40 mph gusts, that’s a lot better than the last one.

Good morning all, 33 going to 40 with a 60% chance of a wintery mix.

Drew, the old people in central Va used to cook butter beans/lima beans, the big ones were limas, with a big glob of bacon grease, a good amount of sugar and then cook them slow all day. They were very good.

Someone said they like fresh peas not canned, peas should be frozen, never canned. :2cents:

My grand mother used to raise yellow english peas, only used them to make pea soup. Mom said she never got used to the idea of yellow pea soup.

There is a guy in our area, Joel Salatin that raises chickens on pasture for meat and has a big wagon chicken house for layers. We have his book, Pastured poultry Profits, Great book if you are thinking about chickens. This guy is the Guru of back to the land chickens and raises chickens in a big way.

Prayers for those in need, have a great day. Ed

txdon;
a link for you. This is who I get mine from.
Batchelors Dried Bigga Marrowfat Peas - 25g - A Bit of Home (Canada)

25g is about an ounce of peas, but don't be fooled by the weight to volume. One box will make a real 'good' serving of peas for the average person that would use them as a small part of a meal along with potatoes and what have you.

Thanks for the link. Minimum order is $30 so I check out Amazon dot com and they have the same box. I'll put it as an add on on my next order to get free shipping.

We raised chickens for a few years. No need for a compost pile. Just throw all the vegetable garbage in chicken yard. Gone in no time. Even put egg shells in there. When we visited Wroughtharv last spring. He gave us a dozen eggs from the farm. As a treat for the chickens he gave them Mini Marshmallows. They would come from everywhere to get them.

I'm with you Kyle love Lima beans and fresh corn

Me, too! And if the fresh ones are not available, canned ones will do.

And I never even heard of the kind of peas some of you have been talking about; Marrowfat?

txdon, Does amazon.com sell food? I was just there and couldn't find any food.
In the USA you can order a lot of food items. Plus they own Whole Foods. Which will deliver your groceries to your home if you live close enough to a store location. We have ordered some canned and boxed items from Amazon Pantry with good prices and delivery. Like the heavy duty boxes they ship Pantry items in.

So chickens eating junk food does that eliminate them from the prestigious tittle of free range or does free range only refer to the size of their cage or yard?

Good morning! Beautiful Winter day. 45˚ high clouds heading to 70˚. Doning Mom's Taxes, would rather be on the tractor AAAUUUGGGG!

I wonder if the eggs taste like toasted marshmallows?
Since marshmallows get the gelatin from cows you are getting your two main food groups in one small container.

What? You calling Marshmallows Junk Food. :confused3::D

Been so long since we had free range eggs. I could not tell if the marshmallows affected the taste. There was a snake in one of the nest. Would that affect the taste?

2. Before cooking - Ballistic coefficient.
As a small kid, it was hard enough with only lung power to propel a round pea out of a short tube and get anywhere near the neighbor's cat. The cat usually laughed at me as it was, it would have had hysterics if I only had split peas for ammo.

Very rarely we would latch on to a supply of peas to use in our bean shooters. They flew much straighter than the navy beans we usually got, but for some reason were harder to come by. I still remember how the navys would swell up and wrinkle if held too long in my cheek, just waiting for the perfect moment to unload a stream of 'em on an unsuspecting insect or house pet, or even better, good buddy!

I tried Amazon Pantry once, too. I was impressed by the heavy box my order came in. Not so impressed by the broken boxes of pasta I found at the bottom of the box, under the big cans of tomato puree. Think I'll continue to do my shopping at the grocery store. At least there if things get damaged in shipping, I know who to blame (me).:confused2:

Free range simply means uncaged nowadays, but actually meant unrestrained originally.

I would think the hawks, owls, coyotes, foxes, stray dogs, domestic pets, chicken snakes and bobcats would get all the uncaged chickens in a few months.

Good Morning!!!! 42F @ 5:15AM. A mix of clouds and sun. High 62F. Winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph.

Welcome back, CJR. Hope things are going well for you down in Louisana!

Never been tempted to raise chickens. It would take too many to meet my demands for drummets. The neighbors around here seem to eat their layers at about eighteen months as the egg production falls off. Helps explain the regular TSC chick sales.

My mother was pure murder on any sort of pea or bean. Always cooked to mush. Then there were the lima beans, which were served in a casserole of sausage meatballs and a sauce that guaranteed a sizzling case of heartburn, even to a little kid. Never to be forgotten was the neighbor lady who babysat, who always seemed to serve meals out of cans, and favored an awful combination of corn, carrots, and peas smothered in some kind of slimy white sauce. Makes me gag just to think about it, and it did make me gag back then. I remember filling one plate with puke, right at the dinner table! The only beans that pass muster in my book are fresh green beans slow simmered with a smoked ham hock, or baked beans with a dollop of extra molasses added for character and flavor. Just never could get over the chalky texture of peas prepared "like mom used to".:talktothehand:

Got a start on preparing the 3D printed panel for the Vanagon yesterday, but when I compared it to the remains of the original, I found that there was an extra part to it that covered where the control knobs would mount. That left a hollow chamber behind the extra panel, so I cut it out with a carbide burr mounted in the Foredom tool, then smoothed things up with the little belt sander. Don't know how it happened, but the little plastic window that shows a miniature drivetrain with telltale dots at the location of each differential locker had been warped badly, and would no longer lay flat in its window. I sandwiched it in a few layers of paper and put an old iron, set to low heat, on it for a minute or two, leaving it considerably flatter. It's usable again, but also has much of the paint chipped off the back, leaving it an unsightly mess. So I think I'll have a go at duplicating it using the computer driven mask cutter and some acetate. The bar isn't very high at this point, and a replacement, if I can even find one, is likely to have all the same problems.

The only work on the old motorcycle consisted of sanding off the white lettering that covered the new battery, then giving it a coat of clear sealer to restore the shine. That left it a uniform black color that much more closely mimics the batteries available back in the '60s. Never painted a battery before, but there's always a first time for everything.

Have a good one, gang!
